It's a lot of talk about nothing. Saban's not leaving. The only people who seem to think there's anything to it are UT & Auburn fans, and we can understand why they're holding on to the dream.
That's pretty naive. The entire reason it's getting so much media attention is that people think it's plausible enough to pay attention to. Likely? perhaps not. But definitely plausible. Two basic reasons:
1. Head Coach at Texas >>>>> Head Coach at Alabama. Texas is the kind of school that coaches get buyout exceptions written into their contracts for. There aren't a lot of other places like that. Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, USC might be the only others. It's not that Alabama has any less potential, or has been any less historically successful than any of those schools (not interested in discussing claimed titles haha), it's just that for whatever reason those programs have mystique in a way other programs don't.
2. Money. Say all you want about Bama's willingness to match or beat Texas' offer, but when it comes down to it, the University of Texas can afford to outpay the University of Alabama out of the building, down the street, and around the corner. Texas' boosters are even further ahead of Bama's, and they're hungry for success and presumably willing to pay. If money alone drives Saban's decisions, he'll go to Texas. There's not a program in the country that can sustainably pay the same amount Texas can. Everyone's got crazy rich boosters, but Texas has an extra 10-20 million in profit every year.
That doesn't mean Saban WILL be going to Texas. Just that its plausible enough to consider.
