Our cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers did very well this year. I planted early so the only thing still going well is the tomatoes.

My peppers are seemingly hitting a second wind as they pumped out a large first batch, went cold for a brief time, and are sprouting a bunch again...

I did cucumbers one year and they were VERY successful... and MUCH bigger than store bought which isn't the general rule with growing at home I find.

Something keeps eating my cucumber plants this year. Everything else will be left alone, but the cucumbers plants will be gone. I have tried a few things, but nothing works.

It is a pickle worm, I think. Cayenne pepper seems to repel them.

Interesting. I put out beer to attract and drown the slugs, but my cucumbers still get eaten. I have also sprayed with the wax pepper spray, but I haven't tried just regular cayenne pepper. I will give that a shot.

There is a recipe online somewhere that shows you how to make the cayenne into an oil that you can spray on them. I hope this helps!

Try vinegar around your plants as well...

I replaced my 70 year old 75 foot tall fallen catalpa with a 10 foot tall oak sapling (oakling?) a month ago. Does that count?

Well this year we have tomatoes, string beans, sage, basil, oregano, jalapenos and artichokes so far. We're going to add a few more, Maybe cucumbers and carrots.

What do you guys have going?

If you remember that far back, how deep was the oak tree root ball?

Nothing yet. Mother Nature still refuses to let spring arrive. Flurries this morning. Late April is usually when those around here can safely plant without fear of frost or freezing.

Bob.... our ground is frozen big time. It snowed yesterday! lol

I shoud probably get some seeds germinating though. Have a feeling that this is one of those years where winter is going to go right into summer. Thanks for the reminder.

Not as large as I'd expected. It was in a container rather than wrapped in burlap. If I recall correctly I dug a hole 3 feet deep and 4 feet in diameter. I put about a foot of compost in the bottom of the hole and to fill around the circumference after beating the tar out of the root ball to unbind the roots. I mulched liberally and watered it daily until the ground froze.

I'll know in a month or so if I did it correctly – IF the snow is gone by then.

This year I put an Avacado tree and Orange tree (blossoming now and best smell in the world) in the back yard. Im in the process of building a 8X12 garden box and think I will be putting in some tomatos, jalapenos and habenero pepper, green beans, cabbage, and maybe some broccoli and carrots. Im, wondering if maybe I can squeeze in some cucumber and running the vines up the fence.

What are you guys planting this year? We'll start seedlings in a couple weeks, no rush because as Wooly & Irish alluded to, it appears to be one of those years with late freezes.

We are trying out some heirloom peppers ( 3 varieties) , tomatoes (3 varieties), chard, kale, brussel sprouts, beans (some pole and some bush) and I think that's it. We have our usual squash, cucumbers and tomatoes as well.

We cut our blackberry bushes back 2 years ago and they look primed for a big year and hopefully our blueberries deliver as well. I'll double check our seed packets to see if i forgot anything.

Cucumbers are big plants. I don't suggest trying to squeeze them into areas, as they can choke out the plants around them. Same for zuchuni. If you are looking for a plant to squeeze in and run up a fence, I suggest pole beans. They are sturdy plants that don't choke out plants around them (as long as they are givin something to climb). Things like grapes and hops sound fun, but they are tough to grow around other plants. They do better by themselves.

I hate you for having an avacado tree. I haven't ever lived somewhere that I could have one.
