Those 2 played very well that's for sure.

Bad D
Glad to see Ben coming around.
It was a win ugly but a W
Lets see if the O-line can continue this (today they were much bigger then Navy, Lets see against a good D-line)

Farley just doesn't understand that safeties are required to make tackles

Folston was studly

Niklas had a good game

Defense was not aggressive at all

Side note: I really hope they move Carlisle to the slot. I hate seeing him on the sideline but he doesn't fit into what were doing with the run game

Not sure how serious these injuries are yet but that may end up being the biggest takeaway from these last two weeks. Schwenke couldn't even put pressure on his foot, that didn't look good. Very glad to had the W but need to clean things up on D. BJax, Calabrese, fox and Farley played atrocious, IMO. I always watch the game a second time to see if I missed things but as of now it was absolutely terrible. The young guys at those positions have played better. Folston is a beast and is going to be very very special before he leaves. If wee don't throw those picks we score points on both those drives and this isn't that close. That's just how the game goes. I'll also say that I guess I'm in the minority here because I don't think it's scheme. IMO, we make easy tackles it's not that close. I look at the games where we are giving up points and it's the same guys whiffing in the open field. Others are doing just fine but a few that are playing a lot of football can't seem to get it.

Diaco was on crack when he made the gameplan. Nothing the D did made sense.

Folston is incredible. Running game was unstoppable. I don't know why we threw so much in the 1st. Good adjustment.

D was just unexcusable though. Calabrese and Farley are incredibly bad.

Post Game Observations (Navy)...

Post Game Observations (Navy)...

1. The defense had a pretty bad game. Forget that Navy is a hard team to defend, or that they switch up their attack from week to week......... we didn't win very many 1 on 1 battles today. And that is a bad sign. But they did find a way to do just enough to win the game.

2. The offensive game plan seemed to be pretty good. ND had 506 yards of total offense. 264 yard rushing, and 242 yards passing. That's balance. Tommy had one really bad throw, which resulted in the 2nd INT. But he had a typical Tommy day...... some great throws, mostly good throws, and a sprinkling of bad throws.

3. Tarean Folston had a great game. Let's not annoint him the next Barry Sanders or anything, but he played extremely well today. Before we go bitching about how he should have been playing all season long, let's just wait and see how the rest of the season plays out. Kelly just said, in his post game presser, that Folston would not have been able to play as many plays, earlier in the season, due to his conditioning. So Folston's lack of PT was probably a function of motivation to work harder, combined with the other backs playing well.

4. TJ Jones is averaging ~85 yards a game, this season. If he continues to reach his average, he will finish the season with almost exactly 1,000 yards receiving. Great job, TJ!!!

My game ball goes to Tarean Folston: 18 carries for 140 yards, and his first TD. Congratulations, young man!

Navy's option exposed the lack of speed (Smith being the exception) that we have at safety and linebacker. This is a weakness that is not going away and will prevent us from being an elite team next year as well.

Secondly, Kelly needs to fire the Special Teams coach after the season. We are terrible in kickoff coverage and kickoff returns and it almost cost us the game today.

I understand people getting on the D but I hope some understand how difficult it really is to defend the option when its run to near perfection.

Next week ND will play a 'normal' offense and will have Nix back in and defensively will be back in their comfort zone.

- Tommy played well, outside of one poor throw into coverage that was picked. The first interception wasn't on him as Jones slipped.

- Folston was impressive. Would like to see a 1-2 punch of him and McDaniel going forward, with GAIII getting a few touches thrown in too. Carlise needs to move to the slot.

- Line was just dominating (including Niklas), but that was to be expected. Still, credit where it's due.

- The defense, in general, was unbelievably bad today. This game reminded me so much of the Weis Era... we could score pretty easily, and anytime we held the opposing offense to a punt it was cause for celebration. There simply is NO excuse to play this poorly on defense, even with the injuries. Western Kentucky and Duke held them to 7. Pitt 24 (in OT), Air Force 28. Worst defensive performance I've seen from the Irish in a long time; probably the worst since the last time we lost to these guys.

- Jarron Jones did make a few plays; was nice to see.

- I want Farley off the field. Hardy made a few plays today (aside from the last play of the game). Really hope he starts getting the lion's share of time at Farley's spot going forward.

- The poor defensive performance may or may not be attributable to Diaco, but this is his defense and it simply has to be better.

- Hopefully the injuries we sustained today aren't serious.

- Just glad we won. Figured this would be a high scoring game (won a little ca$h by taking the over), and I didn't think we'd blow them out. Still surprised by how poorly the defense played.

If I only saw Folston and McDaniel in the backfield the rest of the year, I would be very very happy!

I wasn't able to watch the game today. What was was going on that Navy was effective? I gather that bad tackling was a part of it, but what was wrong schematically?

- Schwenke deserves the game ball. Also others but he just played like a champion today until the injury.

- Folston.. oh my he is good at football. In the other hand, Farley is very bad at football, maybe even terrible.

- Calabrese with a lot of missed tackles.

- Rees missed two easy touchdowns and two turnorvers, not great.

- Niklas just dominated the game without having the ball in his hands.

- Koyack, finally, stepping up.

- I noticed two straight nice plays of Jarron Jones, we need him and he needs to be better and produce more.

- Kelly and Diaco having a huge downgrade this year.

- Amir Carlisle is in the Doghouse.

- Eilar Hardy ahead of Max Redfield.

- Bryant looked very happy and smiling a lot after the Atkinson's TD, not big deal but i enjoyed that moment.

So if you believe that nothing the D did made sense that fine but what should they done schematically? Formations, personell, etc. Your coaching D at ND.

-if we throw zero times in this game we win by 21
-Navy coach bad call on last play there (got cute when didnt need to)
-cant believe our D line lined up 2 yds off the line of scrimmage on D
-we have a lot of injuries going into the "run for a BCS bid" homestretch. worried
-this navy offense is too much in Diacos head and it permeates to the the D. just play your own D and let chips fall. would Bama play D the way we did? (schematically).

I think I heard the announcer say that Duke held Navy to 7 points (so it can't be that difficult. We really stunk on defense...there was no disruption at all though we got a stop when it REALLY mattered. I think the o-line played it's best game.

Right. But we also held ASU way below their season average. All I heard after that game is how much we sucked. Same with USC. The chant is the same, no matter the opponent.

You're probably right. Looking at that play, had that linemen blocked Eilar, the WR picks up that fist down with ease. Great play Hardy and great tackle Jaylon.

How do you figure that? We would somehow have been able to stop Navy's offense, if we ran the ball? Navy was still going to score almost every time they touched the ball. And we were NOT going to score every time we touched the ball. So 21 seems to be more than just a little exaggeration.

I think I agree with most of this post.

Well, count in the points off of Tommy's picks

And subtract the points from the drives that stall when you try to run on 3rd and 8. Being one-dimensional is NEVER good, no matter who you are playing.
