The depth chart at quarterback is drastically different right now that it obviously would be if last year's starter, Everett Golson, was on the team. Golson is paying his penance this semester for the academic issues that got him suspended for the fall semester, but Kelly remains in contact with him.

"He's in contact weekly," Kelly said of Golson. "Either with myself or with (offensive coordinator) coach (Chuck) Martin. He's in contact with our graduate assistant coach (Pat) Welch two or three times a week. Just catching up on what we're doing (such as) game plans (and) staying connected."

Golson remains on the west coast working with quarterbacks coach George Whitfield in what Kelly says is a "structured environment".

That sounds good. And, per the conversation of a few days ago, he's really given no signs that he plans to not come back. If he wanted to be gone, he would be. Still, there's always the chance something goes awry between now and next season that derails that plan. Kind of feel like we ought to have a QB with game experience on our roster beyond Andrew Hendrix. Looking at you, Malik.

Isn't he supposed to be back on campus in the spring? If so, we only have to worry until January unless Everett is willing to burn another year of eligibility waiting out a transfer.

I believe he can return in January, so we SHOULD know then whether we'll see him in blue & gold again.

I have had a question I've been meaning to ask about the bolded portion because I have seen a couple posters write this. Since Everett was suspended from school and has to sit out the year doesn't that count as a year out of football and he could attend any school with no repercussions?

Or does a LOI bind you to a specific school for 4-5 years unless a transfer is requested? Even if you are kicked out of school.

I could be wrong, and would welcome the insight, but I think if he takes a single class back at ND while having that schooling covered under his scholarship, his transfer would be the same as any other athlete transferring out.

I mean if he decides not to come back at all and join another school in the spring

Gotcha. I thought you meant if he came back in January. Since he isn't under scholarship this semester, if he never came back, I don't think we could bind him to the LOI. That said, I know we have some people well-versed on these matters so I'll defer to them.

I thought I remember hearing that he would actually be back in South Bend by late November before the start of the winter session, so hopefully he's back in town and ready to work by then. At least it would be ~2 less months of worrying that something goes wrong.

Yes, back in spring or maybe sooner. But he was here last spring and he's not here now. Stuff happens, and it'd be good to have someone else we can plug in in case it happens again.

My understanding is BK said EG would be back from SoCal around Thanksgiving. He can't technically enroll and be with the team till next semester.

I'm sure someone will come in here and give us the exacts soon enough.

This is a stupid post lately. Just facts, Everett is going to be our starter next year. He knows it, BK knows it. He is a dynamic player with a rocket arm. Malik will still have 2 years of eligibility left after Everett leaves. The skill positions are loaded next year at rb and WR. DD, Tori Hunter, Robinson,Niklas. Everett you remember is very tight with DD and he is his go to guy. He would be crazy to go anywhere else with what is surrounding him on offense next year.

A question: does Notre Dame have a winter session? (That's how I phrased my post above, but only because that's how I understand it based on what my school does.)

If Notre Dame offers short winter courses, Golson may be able to begin taking classes before the Spring, hence his return in late November.

No. Fall semester ends in December. Winter starts in January. There's about a three-week break in between.
I've heard the "back in November" line too for Golson but I'm not sure what that means. I don't think he'd be allowed to practice until at least the end of finals, and I would be very surprised if he were eligible to play in a bowl game, so I'm not sure why he would have much role in pre-bowl practices even if he were there. Might make sense for all to just wait until January, no?

I completely agree EG would be stupid to go elsewhere, and he's shown no signs that he wants to. I just think - especially after watching Hendrix the other night - that we need to get Zaire in some games here the next few weeks, just in case things somehow don't work out. Or even if they do and Golson gets hurt next year. Not a lot of faith in Andrew to run our offense at this point.

A poster on BGI is saying that Eric Hansen reported that Golson has already submitted paperwork to enroll next semester.

Yeah. This makes more sense than him actually returning to campus in November...
Notre Dame football notebook: Rees will be back, but who's No. 2 for Irish? - South Bend Tribune: Football

Kelly said Tuesday that exiled junior quarterback Everett Golson will likely remain training with “quarterback engineer” George Whitfield Jr., in San Diego, Calif., until the middle of November, “when the money is likely to run out.”

Golson’s family is footing the bill for the Myrtle Beach, S.C., product’s work with the private quarterback coach as he hones his skills while serving a university-imposed suspension this semester for academic misconduct issues.

...

After Golson finishes his training in San Diego, he is expected to move his workouts to the Chicago area, specifically with Elias Fitness Training in Highland Park, Ill. Owner/trainer Elias Karras works with numerous NFL and Notre Dame athletes during the offseason and trained former Irish wide receiver Michael Floyd when he was on an indefinite suspension from the team the spring before his senior season.

Kelly said Golson has completed the application process for reinstatement for the spring semester.

Sooo when ND plays in a late bowl game and Golson's back, is he the automatic #2 QB...and if TR struggles...does BK play Golson?

Only half kidding...sort of...but not really...

Not sure but I wouldn't think so. This has been the plan all along and like TP said I would imagine the staff is being very diligent in making sure Everett is the QB next year.

Is there any worry of or possibility of non acceptance with admissions?

from what kelly has been saying there will be NO issues....he wasn't required to take any classes and states he has been in talks the entire time w/ staff and that is not just football related staff

Crazy to imagine this offense next year. Huge upgrade at QB, and the only skill position loss is TJ (baring something crazy with the draft). Losing Martin and Watt will hurt, but Elmer should be a solid replacement on the line, and I'm sure we'll find someone solid to plug in at LG. Should be an exciting offense finally.

Not directed at you, but isn't that the thought we had this year with ILB and safety?

One of the big reasons we have been able to move the ball this year is the OL, specifically the left side. The pass pro has been fantastic and the run game has improved as the right side has gained more experience. While I like Elmers and the other frosh, we will take a step back next year. Luckily, EG has the mobility to get around it, but the OL will be a big concern of mine heading into the year.

If there's one place I am actually not worried about it's our online heading into the future. We have good and great young talent. I would like to see is run up some scores so these young guys could see the field though.

People were also worried about the WR and TE position going into this year. So I am not sure I am going to agree with your post. Losing the left side of the line is going to be noticeable, but we have plenty of quality Olinemen waiting to play. Replacing 2 of the 5 linemen is always wanted. WR will lose Jones and D. Smith. I feel pretty confident that the WR corps will be just as solid.

Who will be a bigger loss next year, Nix or Martin? I would say Nix due to depth at oline. However a great LT is hard to replace. But that's just my opinion.
