I don't worry that much about the O Line. It's a unit where there are always veterans leaving, but other guys step up. Cave, for instance, was an All-American, but we haven't actually missed him much. And with the last couple of classes, we've got good depth.

Same with WR. TJ Jones has bloomed into a hell of a receiver. But we've got so much quality depth I think someone else will emerge. We lose no TEs. No RBs. If Golson makes it back we should have our best offense in years.

On D, ILB of course is worrisome. We need Grace to come back strong, or else I really do think we've got to move someone over, especially since there aren't enough snaps at OLB. Can Okwara play it?

If the other thread about Tuitt is correct, that takes a lot of load off the D Line. But we must find a nose. Jones? Really bummed we burned Kona's fifth year for nothing.

But our DBs have nowhere to go but up. And our athletes on the edge (Jaylon, Ishaq, Okwara) are fearsome. Our defense will be OK.

Updated for Watkins, and re-updated for McKenzie who is committed from his end, but apparently not qualified as of yet (as far as I know).

I am betting that Utopo and Moore both get asked back at this point, and I think Tuitt is a remote possibility.

I don't think it matters though, since I am not sure we'll get more than 3 or 4 more comitts anyway.

Does any of it really matter anyway? What are the odds we start the 2014 season with more than 80 scholarship players? ASK EM ALL BACK!

I agree. We never get there. I would tell all of the seniors to apply as a matter of course, and be ready when called. I know I would have been willing to wait until the last minute to stay an extra year in college!

And there is word that JJ may be playing NT for a spell. I think this is his future home, personally.

I made a picture version of this. Bold are current commits, italics are projected 5th year guys. I know we dont do redshirts, but its easier to think of players who are eligible for 5th years as redshirts. The 2015 needs are based on the unlikely premise that none of the 5th year guys that year coming back.

The Requirements are based on my beliefs and trend of how many of each position we take. With those as the requirements, we currently have one more CAT position player than needed and need one player at TE, NG, CB and S. We have 3 spots left with those guys.

I have Isaiah McKenzie and Richard Yeargin III as current commits and Stephon Tuitt as coming back for his senior year.

Anyways enough talking, heres the picture:

Not sure if this is the best thread for this, but...

Was just listening to this week's ISD podcast and Mike Frank made a very interest comment about how he is hearing that there is a good chance that ND may essentially be oversigning this cycle. Supposedly BK and staff have been doing some research and came to the conclusion that transfers and injuries are to be expected (sorry it took 4 years to realize that, personally). Will be very interesting to see how aggressive they get and what sort of backlash can be expected. My guess is they will allow wiggle room in the 5th years and not truly oversign a la the SEC. But still, encouraging thought process I think.

Yup, no doubt. The self-imposed sanctions plague us year in and year out. I don't think they need to be cut throat about it, but rolling the dice here and there is the difference between having virtually zero depth at NT right now and having a guy like Schutt ready to go.

They need to just tell some of the 5th years to stay available over the summer.

If they are already in a grad progam, couldn't the school just give them a non-athletic scholarship if they left the team?

That's an interesting idea. Ask the marginal 5Ys to plan on coming back; if we whiff on a few targets down the stretch, they're back on the team with a 5Y athletic scholarship. If we close out the recruiting cycle well, then they get an academic scholarship for a free year of grad school.

Lol, maybe.

The other issue is that those 5Ys who are any good may not be willing to wait around. They'll want to transfer elsewhere for that 5th year if ND doesn't want them back.

But I guess we could at least ask them to wait till signing day, right? That would be a great help, and it might still give them time to find a transfer destination (although it wouldn't be ideal because they would miss spring practice.

It's definitely worth a shot.

Hope this happens and we actually have a full roster.

Imagine ND with 85 healthy schollies to start a season? Scary.
I just hope they actually do it and not be scared of the "backlash"... Our numbers this year are ridiculous. We're on USC type sanctions numbers.. I don't want to be like A&M or their ilk I just want to stop fighting with one arm tied behind our back.

Couldn't agree more.
