I think his LOI has to be signed by April 1. If he doesn't sign by that time he will have to wait till the next signing period in order for it to valid. Feb 2013.

While you are technically correct, there is no requirement that a letter of intent be signed at all. If Standifer wanted to wait until the summer to decide, he could do that, make a decision and just show up in the fall for classes at the school he chooses without signing a letter of intent. What he would risk by not signing a letter of intent, would be that the school he chooses could rescind his offer at any point.

The disparity between the top students and football players is probably much bigger at Vandy than ND.

SEC pride

I doubt that completely, and would think the exact opposite would be true. Vandy doesn't necessarily have competing for football championships at the top of its agenda, but academic integrity certainly is. Since that's the case, there's no reason for Vandy to take an unqualified player for football's sake.

But.... Notre Dame had the highest graduation rate of its football players, including Vandy

Graduation rate doesn't necessarily reflect the difficulty to gain admission to a university or the difficulty of attending the university. Also reflects the immense amount of academic support our players receive. Its one metric.

maybe he was given more time to fulfill his online requirement for vandy, while ND only gave him a couple of weeks.

just a guess.
