Outline of the series which will run in 5 parts released each day this week. Looks like Les Miles isn't going to look very good.

Sports Illustrated Investigative Report “The Dirty Game” Set to Launch Tuesday, September 10, at 9 a.m. ET
Posted by sigroup
The rapid ascent of the Oklahoma State University football program into a national powerhouse is examined in a five-part series to run across SI’s platforms

“The Dirty Game,” a SPORTS ILLUSTRATED special investigative report that looks into the transformation of a struggling college football program into a national powerhouse, is set to launch tomorrow morning on SI.com. The series is the result of a comprehensive 10-month investigation into the Oklahoma State University football program. It includes independent and on-the-record interviews with more than 60 former OSU football players who played from 1999 to 2011, as well as current and former OSU football staffers.

The findings will be presented in a five-part series across SI’s family of platforms, beginning with Part 1 (money), which launches on SI.com tomorrow at 9 a.m. ET and is this week’s magazine cover story, on newsstands and tablets Wednesday. Additional live coverage can be found on SI Now, SI.com’s live daily talk show (weekdays at 1 p.m. ET) and across SI’s social media outlets.

After 11 losing seasons in 12 years, OSU turned itself into one of the top programs in the nation. Since 2002, OSU has had 10 winnings seasons, earned its first Big 12 title and went to its first BCS Bowl. The report reveals that OSU went to extreme measures to build a winning program, with an increased willingness to cut corners and bend rules. The transgressions began under former coach Les Miles, who was the head coach in Stillwater from 2001 to ’04 and is now the head coach at LSU, and continued under current head coach Mike Gundy, who was promoted from offensive coordinator in 2005.

SI executive editor Jon Wertheim, SI assistant managing editor Hank Hersch and SI.com executive editor B.J. Schecter oversaw the investigative report, which was written and reported by senior writers George Dohrmann and Thayer Evans.

“We wanted to take a comprehensive look at a big-time program, particularly one that made a rapid ascent,” says Wertheim. “There’s obviously a steady drumbeat of scandal in college sports – improper benefits here; a recruiting violation there – and plenty of rumor and hearsay about the unseemly underbelly. For this piece, we were more about venturing inside the factory and seeing how the sausage is made.”

Parts 2 — 4 of the report continue on SI.com this week and the series culminates in next week’s SI issue and on SI.com. In addition, SI.com will feature videos of former Cowboys talking about their experiences in Stillwater. SI Now will have live coverage and reaction throughout the week. The series will run as follows:

• Part 1: Money (On SI.com Tuesday, 9/10 and in the 9/16/13 SI issue): SI finds that OSU used a bonus system orchestrated by an assistant coach whereby players were paid for their performance on the field, with some stars collecting $500 or more per game. In addition, the report finds that OSU boosters and at least two assistant coaches funneled money to players via direct payments and a system of no-show and sham jobs. Some players say they collected more than $10,000 annually in under-the-table payouts.
• Part 2: Academics (On SI.com Wednesday, 9/11): Widespread academic misconduct, which included tutors and other OSU personnel completing coursework for players, and professors giving passing grades for little or no work, all in the interest of keeping top players eligible.
• Part 3: Drugs (On SI.com Thursday, 9/12): OSU tolerated and at times enabled recreational drug use, primarily through a specious counseling program that allowed some players to continue to use drugs while avoiding penalties. The school’s drug policy was selectively enforced, with some stars going unpunished despite repeated positive tests.
• Part 4: Sex (On SI.com Friday, 9/13): OSU’s hostess program, Orange Pride, figured so prominently in the recruitment of prospects that the group more than tripled in size under Miles. Both Miles and Gundy took the unusual step of personally interviewing candidates. Multiple former players and Orange Pride members say that a small subset of the group had sex with recruits, a violation of NCAA rules.
• Part 5: The Fallout (On SI.com Tuesday, 9/17, and in the 9/23/13 SI issue): SI finds that many players who were no longer useful to the football program were cast aside, returning to worlds they had hoped to escape. Some have been incarcerated, others live on the streets, many have battled drug abuse and a few have attempted suicide.

Gundy makes statement on 'Sports Illustrated's' Oklahoma State series - CBSSports.com

I'm very proud of what we've accomplished here, both on and off the field," Gundy said in what will be his only comment on the report. "Our goal has always been to take young people from where their parents have gotten them and to make them better over a four or five year period. We're very proud of that in many ways. So, until further time -- and obviously the university will make that decision -- there's not any comment that we would have on the Sports Illustrated article.

All he can say at this time.

I couldn't help myself. I went over to TigerDroppings to read how LSU fans are reacting to Les being in the middle of this. It was exactly what I expected:

"I don't give one frick. Some arse whipe as an agenda somewhere. frick SI and their ****** arse reporting. I think OU is scared and scrambling to bring little brother down. "

"Well if les is a dumb as everyone thinks he is he probably didn't know it was going on."

*Yawn*

If there was any decent proof, we wouldn't be talking about "NCAA sanctions" or "recruiting violations." We'd be talking about prostitution charges, drug charges, statutory rape, etc.

Les (and staff) ability to remunerate players without being found out was rumored to be the #1 criterion for the LSU Head Coach Selection Committee. Absolutely no truth to the story that after Les left his interview each member of The Selection Committee found an envelope, stuffed with Benjamin's, taped to the bottom of their chair along with an unsigned note saying, " ya'll didn't even see me do it, now did ya?"

They had Danny Kanell filling in for SVP on the radio today... he said unequivocally that all "big time" schools had hostess programs and implied strongly that they were basically there to whore themselves out for the good of the football team. He seemed to think it was a complete non-issue unless they were actually getting paid to prostitute themselves.

Specifically listed Michigan, Washington, FSU (where he attended) and some others as having "impressive" hostess programs and talked in detail about it... was really quite interesting to here it from his perspective. When Russillo asked him if he "knew it was supposed to be a layup" he responded that as a sheltered kid coming from a small religious high school that he just thought they were "really nice"... probably one of the most hilarious things I've heard on radio. They made the good point that it is no different than pharmaceutical product reps, advertising, or a myriad of other industries where attractive girls are employed to influence the decisions of men.

The bigger story is the covered up drug tests, pay for play, etc.... that's where Oklahoma State (and Les Miles and everyone else) could get burned.

i listened to it....ever time i hear him speak...i just think of what a huuuuge dork he is..in one breath says you have to have some personality issue if the starting qb gets turned down for a "date"...then a few seconds later states he was turned down a couple of times...lol

I care because this is the same shits that got Greg Little $22k per year. If everyone is doing it and the NCAA is shooting turd lasers as depicted by phork, what hope does a legitimate school like ND have?

First thing that came to my mind was Bama... what kind of an idiot thinks LSU, Ok St., UNC, Ole Miss and all these other schools are doing this stuff yet can't beat a squeaky clean program???

I thought I read all these events were beyond the NCAA statue of limitations (4 years). Are there more recent findings of infractions?

@WhitlockJason is going to town on this. Went on air and said that Thayer Evans (one of the SI writers involved in the piece) is essentially a hack and incompetent.

Goes up to 2011 and they can go far back if there is a "pattern" and/or it's super serious.

It's funny because Whitlock is widely regarded as one of the worst writers in the business and had other people ghost write articles for him because he is that much of a hack.

So Jason Whitlock just called another author a "hack and incompetent"?

I couldn't find a "Pot calling kettle black" meme that properly portrayed this scenario.

I dont care because its not like the NCAA is going to do anything about it. The NCAA throws darts to determine their course of action.

Part II is up. It's on academics.

Do yourself a favor. Skip the article, go straight to the comments. It's outstanding. The article is what you'd expect. Cheating, no shows, ect.

I love how everyone is attacking Evans. George Dohrmann wrote the actual article. If I'm not mistaken, an ND grad, Pulitzer prize winning author. They have, apparently, recordings of everyone who went on the record and they quoted in the article. It was vetted all the way up the SI chain.

I pray, PRAY that they release the tapes. You have all these guys quoted coming out saying they were misquoted or that they didn't say anything like that. I would love for the tapes to come out.

I think the most damning thing I've heard so far is that one of my buddies, an Ohio State fan, actually said, "Wow, they're screwed."

If anyone would know, it'd be him.
