Ty Losingham or Ty Golfingham Stories

Intelligent debate about the Notre Dame football program under Kelly and the recruits offered is healthy. As an old-timer, I am very happy with Kelly. I have lived through Faust, Davie, Willingham/Losingham/Golfingham and Weis. The worst was Ty. Ty did not give a crap. Ty did not come anywhere near close to doing the work needed to recruit outstanding student-athletes that fit at Notre Dame. Ty's (golf) handicap was more important to him than the Notre Dame football program.

One story I remember is the recruitment of Brian Toal who was an outstanding linebacker who ended up excelling at BC. The story - as I recall it - was that Ty had and his staff had not done the work needed to recruit Toal but Ty did have an an in home visit with Toal. Ty stayed and stayed and stayed and overstayed his welcome fantasizing that Toal would commit to Notre Dame before Ty left Toal's house. Ty eventually did leave Toal's house and Toal did not commit to Notre Dame. Is this story accurate?

Are there any other stories about how being the football coach at Notre Dame interferred with Ty's primary mission - perfecting his golf game?

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I always found it humorous how the media tried to play the race card on Ty's firing. Yeah, his record was similar to Davie's/Weis's...but they forget how bad some of Ty's teams were blown out. He gave up some of the largest deficit's that we've seen in our history. His second season alone he lost 38-0 to Michigan, 45-14 against USC, 37-0 Florida State, 33-14 to BYU, and 38-12 against Syracuse! Next season wasn't much better. Some of these games weren't even competitive. Davie was going into overtime against teams like #1 Nebraska, while Weis was at least going toe to toe with USC a few times. People pointed to the first 8 wins on Ty's resume in that 2002 season, but to be honest I wonder if a lot of that wasn't luck and a strong defense that was recruited and built up by Boob.

If the Willingham firing and media shtick wasn't ridiculous enough, the fact Washington thought they were getting a gem was golden. Before Ty, Washington never had 3 straight losing seasons under a coach, let alone the four he would end up with by the time he exited. He broke a number of other records at Washington as well, none of which were good: first time Oregon and Oregon State had 5 straight wins over Washington (4 were Ty), set a new record for the largest margin of defeat at home which came against Ok State. Twice he started a season 0-4 which was 2 of 4 times this had happened in the program's history. He gave Arizona the biggest winning margin against Washington ever. Willingham owns the worst winning percentage in school history (.229). All this, not to mention he also gave Washington their first winless season in 119 years!

Ok, I'm done

Why a new thread on a dead issue now? There are loads of posts in the archives beating this dead horse.

ND football has survived Malloy's and his henchmen's plan to dismember the program.

Hell, even UW poster's have moved on.

Here's an appropos post from 6/6/05

Can we close this thread and move on?

If you don't like the thread, then don't post in it. Don't get why you have to give him a hard time about it. The issues under Ty have came up lately in other threads and people have been talking about it on the site. So I think this thread is totally fine and appropriate. As you so politely pointed out, the last discussions on the topic were eight years ago. Maybe some people want to talk about the topic retrospectively.

Either way, as I said. If you don't like the thread, then don't open it.

Sorry, I shouldn't have posted  Ty still strikes a nerve I guess, but what I said isn't anything that hasn't already been said 100 times.

I think that a thread on Ty is a fine undertaking.

It is my understanding that when Ty was fired from Washington, he was still the second highest paid employee (or ex-employee) at the University of Notre Dame.

I understand he is or has been the women's golf coach at Stanford University. Too bad he couldn't have found his calling earlier.

The funnier stories are the other candidates for the job that Condoleezza Rice was able to nix out, to get Ty the nod.

Agree with Wooly. Too much condemnation around here, and not enough creation.

Bring on the Ty stories!!!!!

I heard Ty once had an opportunity to land a commit from Vince Young, but cancelled to fit in a round of golf instead.

Didn't something like this happen with Mark Sanchez. I remember hearing Ty totally screwed up that recruiting visit...

I heard Ty once had the opportunity to hire a young Bob Diaco as an assistant, but instead took Kent Baer as his DC.

Oh, wait, Baer was his DC on those horrible teams at ND and Washington...while Greg Mattison coached the D-Line at ND. At least one of those guys was worth his salt.

No Willingham stories, but I've got a ton of Weis stories. I could be specific, but in nearly every one-from Maitre D's, ND Professors,ND Security, Dentists, other professionals who interacted with him- Weis acted like a pompous jerk. People don't like Willingham for political reasons, but in all my years living in SB and following ND football (starting in 1965) Weis tops the charts in being disliked.

Can you share some Weis stories? I am fairly bored and they sound interesting. Reps and vbucks coming!

Here's a few:

1. Weis wanted a dentist to shut down his practice while he got dental treatment. The dentist told him no. Weis went into his "do you realize I'm the head coach of ND" spiel, which he did to many people when they would not give him special treatment. This was particularly true of restaurant owners. Weis wanted them to keep their most visible and highly prized table open for him without committing to coming. When they wouldn't, he went into his "I'm the head coach at ND" thing.

2. An ND prof was playing soccer at the Gug in November and it was kind of chilly. He had to dress at the rec center across the street and then run over to the Gug. He got to the entrance the same time as Weis. Weis looked at him very seriously and said "You lack reason". The ND prof thought wtf, this guy's got to be kidding, but Weis wasn't. He said it again "You lack reason".

3. An ND security guard drove Weis to the stadium and other places in a golf cart. Not once did Weis say "Thank you" or even give the guy a smile. He just got out and went on his way. This guy had driven many coaches, and they all could be bothered to say "thanks".

There are more, but that gives you a sense.

i doubt Ty had any fault in Sanchez' recruitment, any real fault. Sanchez was offered by USC as a freshman in HS, was a 4 year starter(if memory serves me correct) in HS and was never going anywhere other than USC.

Somebody said it here before IIRC:

Didnt CW always lick his finger (like all the way around) before taking off his Super Bowl ring to show somebody?
