I've never been a Superman fan.
The whole indestructible and constantly holding back when in fights always turned me off.
Plus his secret identity is ridiculously stupid.

BUT this movie looks spectacular!
Especially loved the "you are not alone" trailer.

What is it about Superman that gets critics all riled up? It is a 57% on RT (by far the lowest superhero movie of the last few years), and 5.5 on IMDB meta score.

I haven't seen it, so can't form my own opinion, but these ratings have me a wee bit apprehensive to go see it now.

From what I've read, critics don't think there is enough character development and too much action.

I read one review that complained that he wasn't referred to as "Superman" enough. Seriously?

The action is fantastic, acting is above-average (particularly by Michael Shannon) and the score is incredible. I didn't think it dragged at any point and the non-linear aspect of the movie was also a nice change of pace.

I have to say one thing the Nolan DC thing has working against it is not being able o get the young kids in to see it. I won't let my son watch the Batman trilogy. The avengers and marvel stuff is pretty tame compared to the intense psychology of Nolan's stuff. IDK if Superman is like that but Nolan's way of story telling could not hold my kids attention. I absolutely loved the Dark knight but was meh on the other two and my wife watched the opening scenes of The Dark Knight and it nearly freaked her out.

Are you Amish? Lol I kid

Saw man of steel at midnight in IMAX 3D. I thought it was incredible. I don't understand why the critics are bashing it so bad. I think alot of it has t do with Snyder hate. Lots of the cinema snobs don't like his style, and the fact that he didn't pay his dues in movie school ect. Whatever it seems like fans are loving everyone in my theater cheered at the end.

Anyone who saw it:
Do you think my four year old son would like it?
I've been wanting to take him, but am worried it'd be a waste of money.

He can't sit still and isn't interested in any show unless it's animated. Will it hold his interest or will we be kicked out in five minutes?

My son came home from school yesterday and went to see the movie. He raved about it afterwards. Said it wasn't up there with the likes of the Dark Knight but still said it was worth seeing.

Watched it last night and while its not the Dark Knight (nothing will ever compare to that), it was pretty awesome. I guess I can see what they mean about a lack of character development, but I didn't really care. It's definitely not like any other Superman movie. Do yourself a favor and go see it at the theater.

I loved the movie. Wasn't as good as the dark knight which is the standard by which all comic movies will be compared to but it was still damn good. My theory on why critics are dogging it is because it is a comic book movie that is t avengers or dark knight where they would look like complete tools if they did bash it so they bash it regardless because most "movie people" that I know and deal with think comics and comic movies are low brow and hey hate that they make them so unless they're up on such a level where you can knock it they will dog it as much as they can so they can do what they feel they can do to get people to stop having a demand for movies like that. I know I may be farfetched but sometimes critics forget that movies are supposed to be fun and not so over analyzed and trying to prove that your tastes are just so high class that you won't lower yourself to like a movie about a silly comic book.

I went to see it today and i enjoyed it. Obviously its not on the level of Dark Knight as people have said but it is worth seeing. I agree there could have been a little more character development but i dont think it took much away from the movie. Im really happy with this one because i thought the previous superman movies were just terrible and this one came through as i expected.

Went against my better judgement with the wife and kid. Other than a few scenes my kid loved it there were a few scenes that were really intense and the nonlinear style as I suspected gave my kid problems following along. Visually epic. After seeing it I don't think the character development thing is an issue. Most people are familiar with all the characters anyway. Lots of homages tucked in throughout. I really enjoyed it and thought it did stand on its own. I tried not to compare it to other Superman movies but they made it hard for me to not. Anyway great in the theater and I can't imagine what it would be like in IMAX. Many people clapped at the end of my showing and out in the lobby my kid yelled "that movie was Awesome!!!" Got lots of laughs.

Just got back from the theatre. Tried really hard to like it but it gets a big "meh" from me. Thought the effects were great but the screenplay sucked and the dialogue was hammy and really repetitive. Also I was disappointed in the direction during the action scenes. Lots of shaky cam and quick edits which is a far cry from Synder's excellent Watchmen. Russell Crowe and Costner both did really well with the terrible script they were given though. Add in a couple of classic Nolan plot holes and incongruities and my hopes that this would be something special were sunk.

I enjoyed it, but that's because I went in expecting the worst: Kansas. Field of Dreams. Aliens. Underwear made of steel. The Muppets lady. Michael Shannon with a Julius Caesar supercut. Billionth end of the world movie scenario.

Then I realized, what if I was 11 and back in the 90s? I'm in a movie theater. This is awesome!

First 15 minutes of the movie were amazing. Absolutely loved it. But I didn't like Clark's character development and transition as a wanderer to superman. It was a bit abrupt and not as fleshed out as I thought it would be. Russel Crowe as Jor-El was badass. Superman seemed timid and unsure of himself compared to wise and badass Jor-El. I also liked the flying scenes, which were very well done demonstrated the intensity of superman's speed.

I also didn't like how superman showed no regard or concern over injuring people during his fights. I keep thinking of Goku from Dragonball Z, who always requested to his opponent to fight in an area devoid of population and people. It just doesn't sit well with the theme of the movie.

Overall, it was very good movie. It blows away superman returns. Not even close. Like others have said, it's not on the same level as dark knight, but it's an interesting, fresh, and new take on superman.

I thought it was great- I loved it, except for 20 minutes too much action.

It's the least cynical movie I've seen in a long time.

Just reported its exceeding expectations with $125 million opening weekend. Not counting the $170 million from advertisement partners.

i really enjoyed it. it was a new take on it. it was all feasible in a world that could exist with these types of people/aliens living in it.
the two very different yet very much the same fathers are great. both russell crowe and kevin costner command the scenes they are in.
i was nervous going in about amy adams. i'm ok with her now. definitely stronger than kate bosworth.
people comparing this to "the dark knight", is apples and oranges. you should compare this to "batman begins". in which its an origin story. nolans influence will show through in the sequel as it did with the dark knight. lets please remember that superman returns and batman begins came out in the same year and superman returns did a lot better than batman begins in the box office.
let it run its course. i have confidence in that team.
it a terrific take on the superman mythology and one that will stand up over time.

I liked it a lot, my biggest knock was the middle felt a little rushed to get to the action at the end. I will say this though, the small ville fight was incredible.....i literally stood up and clapped during that scene

How does everyone feel about the ending? Alot of old school superman fans seem to be upset by it, I consider myself a diehard superman fan and loved how refreshing it was

Does anyone know if they pulled a Marvel and put in a scene or something after the credits?

My main criticism is they basically took Super Man I and II, mashed the plots together, put some special effects and ultimate death match in a cityscape with gratuitous destruction, setup Superman's and everyone else's moral ambiguity (as Nolan likes to do) and romance with Lois Lane, as well as that Superman needed somewhere to hide leading to his fortress of solitude (destruction of drone, hiring at Daily Planet and end credits).

After reflecting on it, I don't think they (DC or whoever is in charge) did a really good job at all, now. They got the Dark Knight right without a doubt. I think they have fallen short on all the other outings.

The only thing mildy new was the World machine, which I thought was awesome. The homages were nice too. They are going to have a hard time making the Justice League as is planned I believe.
