I think we basically allowed UCLA to talk with him and did not let him out of his LOI.

From that article:

"He asked out of his letter in March. It's been weeks, then months."

I'm sorry, what? Jesus get your **** together. Who reneges on a promise that quickly?

@Jake_Brown: #NotreDame HAS NOT released Vanderdoes from his NLI. It’s written right in the story. 4th paragraph: Prep Blog: National football recruit Vanderdoes says he is not going to Notre Dame and is off to UCLA

So what is the truth?

Trying to read between the lines, it looks like EV is trying to pressure ND into releasing him from his LOI.

The article says at one point that the Vanderdoeses hope ND will release EV once he enrolls at UCLA--presumably because then it will be clear that there is no chance of him attending ND, so, in their thinking, ND would have no reason besides pettiness not to release (as we've discussed, there is another reason -- setting a bad precedent for other recruits to follow if they change their mind after signing day).

The Vanderdoeses evidently think that if they release this statement, ND looks like a bad guy if it doesn't go ahead and grant the release.

Even still, smething isn't right. Why would BK supposedly be livid with UCLA yet allow communication between the two camps?

So he's paying the penalty for beaking hi LOI but ND didn't exercise their power to prevent him from going to another school? So this is just like not blocking, say, Gunner Kiel from transferring?

Isn't this what everyone expected to happen?

Yes. This is playing out exactly as expected-- Vanderdoes breaks his NLOI with ND to attend UCLA, sits freshman year, and loses 1 year of eligibility.

The only "news" here appears to be a spin job from the family in an attempt to pressure ND into releasing him.

This. ND is not going to let him out of his LOI. Enrolling at UCLA is the last play EV has after months of negotiation.

Can we sue this kid? Just curious. I got some lawyer friends who would love to work on this case.

Looks like we were all right and Scuba Steve was wrong. He will win in the long run getting a few years of EV, though...

I just wish there was some way we couldn't let him go to UCLA or he would have to waste a year at JUCO like that loser tight end who transferred from here.

@UCLACoachMora: UCLA welcomes DL Eddie Vanderdoes of Placer HS to the Bruin Family. #8Clap #BruinRevolution

Should light this dickhead's twitter up.

Lane Kiffin just took a deep breath and is excited he won't be the focus of Irish ire today.

If this plays out like this, the NCAA might as well turn into a semi-professional league and get out of academics all together.

Joe Davidson might be right but I bet this is spin to pressure ND. Shame on a journalist if that is true.

So the family must have threatened that if we didnt release him that he would sit a year and go to USC or why would we be worried about it

It's a sleazy move, too. EV's continuing refusal to substantiate his alleged "extenuating circumstances" here pretty much confirms it's nothing but a change of heart. So he signed a contract, and has resolved to screw ND by almost immediately backing out of it instead of playing his Freshman year in SB and then transferring.

And his family has the gall to release a public statement to the effect of, "Yes, I'm breaking a legally binding agreement that ND relied upon to its detriment, but I trust ND will do the right thing (wink! wink!) and let me get away with this douche baggery scott free."

Get bent.

Looking ahead, how do we go about identifying families like the Vanderdoeses and Anzalones before we get burned like this again?

I hope they call his bluff if that's the case. Wanna go play for Lane Kiffin? Be my guest. Enjoy sitting out your freshman year and losing your last year of eligibility.
