The Golson academic expulsion may dramatically affect recruitment. This morning, is that a Cheshire cat grin we see on Steve Spurrier's face? His recruitment argument, and Notre Dame's Achilles' heel, will go something like this - leave your own backyard like Everett, leave your comfort zone for supposed higher ground, and look what it will get you, academic trouble with a capital T! I can see over half of Notre Dame's 2014 targets interest going from cool to ice cold with this expulsion. Considering a Notre Dame athletic offer? You might be shopping down the wrong aisle. As a result of this expulsion, Alford and company will have their work cut out for them!

I seriously doubt it. All ND has to do to counter it: "Worried you'll end up like Everett? Simple. Don't cheat. ND takes it very seriously."

I'm really amazed that some people here seem to think that ND is somehow "in the wrong" for expelling(I guess?) a kid who cheated on a final exam. I guess it is just a sign of the times, or maybe I am getting older than I think; but since when did it become ok to lie, cheat, and steal our way through life? I'm only human, and have made bad decisions many times in my life. But I always knew, when making those decisions, that there could be severe consequences to them. I accepted that those consequences could come to fruition, and I might have to pay a steep price. It's called being accountable. We don't have to be perfect in our lives, but we do need to be accountable. And that includes the starting QB at Notre Dame. This is a big blow to the team, but it's not like we are doomed to see a repeat of 2007, fer Chrissake. The defense is, and always was, going to be strength of this team. We could very well still make a BCS bowl, with this defense. Tommy Rees will most likely become the presumed starter, with Hendrix backing him up. With this defense, we can still win 9 or 10 games.

This is ND doing it right! You got caught cheating? You're out. You're the starting QB? That's nice; you're out. Almost all of us proclaim to be proud of the fact that ND does it "right". This is one of those times when you have to stand behind what you profess to be your morals.

Best post of the thread IMO.

I agree with this. Moving on.

This affects how good we will be next season. But I really dont see how this will have any impact on our recruiting. If anything, it simply shows that the school takes academics seriously and everyone is accountable. That is not a bad thing. That cannot hurt us.

It really sucks but if the school bent the rules for him we would be no better than other programs that are dirty and cheating. It was a dumb move by Golson but the schools doing the right thing. This is why We Are ND. Just time to figure out how to get the offense going this year

Do not confuse the verb affect with the noun effect. And yes, this will affect the recruiting efforts of Denbrock in California, Booker in Carolina, Georgia, Alford in Florida and all over, and Cooks in Texas, Louisiana. This expulsion will have side effects with many targets.

Free falling off a bridge right now...

I used to live a few doors down from the former ResLife guy (Poorman) before he was replaced. Cool guy who let us get away with a bunch of ****. Current administration seems very different. Not saying kids shouldn't be punished but the trend of players leaving is really weird.

I'm terrified about the implications of this on not only the 2013 team but future classes. Might scare some players away.

This x10.

It takes Cam Newton not only cheating multiple times (and getting caught) but stealing another student's laptop to get kicked out of Florida. You think kids are going to want to put up with good 'ol draconian 1-strike ND? Nope. We seemed to be moving away from it, the last couple months seem to suggest we're going right back if not worse than before.

All in all, this might be the straw that breaks Kelly's back. Just sayin'... as a coach I wouldn't want to put up with this crap.

Tidbit on Golson from ISD: "As for the Everett Golson-to-Ole Miss rumors, we're not putting much stock into those at all and in fact, we've heard Golson's already told people at ND that he'll be back. If - and again ND hasn't confirmed this - but if it's an academic issue like we believe, that would likely put Golson out for at least a semester similar to the way Darrin Walls was gone for the fall semester in 2008 before coming back."

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

My thought as well. I have a hunch that this is the beginning of the end. It may take a while but I suspect he is already regretting that he turned down the Eagles.

Can I ask a serious question? How do we go from plagiarism to Golson saying he will be back? I am pretty sure those are mutually exclusive and no way would ND take him back after violating the #1 student violation.

This may be dramatic but these kinds of incidents should force some big-picture reflections. I think the very real, big picture question this morning is whether the current model that BK has implemented can work. We were very close to "elite", powerhouse status at the start of the offseason. The team will still be good this year, but I don't think it would be too strong to say that the foundations of the program have been weakened considerably this offseason. Every individual incident (from BK flirting with the Eagles to the transfers to Vanderdoes to Golson) can be explained away, but there are too many of them to suggest that they are the product of individual flaws instead of something "structural."

If there is a structural problem, one side has to give. Either BK has to alter his model or the university has to alter its model. Right now the program is in a state of disequilibrium that will continue to generate friction until the structural problem is resolved and a new working model emerges. I don't know what that working model will look like, but the program will continue in a fragile state until it's resolved.

“@BGI_DanMurphy: I'm told Golson withdrawal is due to an honor code violation. #NotreDame”

“@BGI_DanMurphy: Withdrawn from the school is different from dismissed. It means he still has an opportunity to re-enroll. #NotreDame #Golson”

Really don't know... first of all, he withdrew versus getting kicked out. Second, we none of us know the extents of the plagiarism/violation. I had 3 personal friends get caught plagiarizing different things and none had a super harsh punishment. They basically just got 0s for the assignment and probation.

So I don't think it's out of the question for him to reapply. Will he reaccepted? That's a bigger question.

I think he will be reaccepted. It's going to be like JJ or DW 2.0, imo.

It makes me wonder what the University did. At my high school they technically never expelled anyone but told the student to leave and basically forced them out, that way they left on their own terms and could enroll at another school without having to deal with the "expelled" being on their record. This could be completely different situation though.

Ok. Thanks. I went to class with a guy who plagiarized an entire 10-page paper. All he did was pull quotes from the web and even left the quotation marks in but did not cite references. Dude did not even change the fonts or format it. He was expelled immediately.

I did not know Golson withdrew himself. I thought he was expelled. I pretty much figured you got expelled for plagiarism.

I don't know. We have 2 capable veterans in Tommy and Andrew. Hopefully, one of them steps up. True freshman QBs are rarely a good idea to start.

Also the deal for GOttlieb, Neal, Ferguson IIRC. Seems like semantics in this case.
