I really hope GAIII can put together something better than what he showed in the Blue/Gold game or that Bryant comes in ready to carry a big portion of the offense. Tommy can manage the offense but I don't see him making the passes that Golson can and he isn't mobile at all so the one great thing that Golson was able to do will be lost completely. For that reason alone, I wouldn't mind seeing Hendrix get his shot and he has 2 years of eligibility left so if he can get it together fast, he would be the best option I believe. But I think we will see another year of running at least twice as often as we pass. Good thing we just landed a 5 star RB and a high 4 star RB.

I think those numbers are a bit skewed. Yes, Rees passed in 2011 for more than Golson did in 2012, he also played in more games in 2011 than Golson did in 2012. Golson missed part of the Purdue game, almost all of the scum game, part of Stanford, and all of BYU. The only game Rees missed in 2011 was half of the USF game and part of the USC game. I don't recall him missing any other games. Then you add in Golson's rushing yards and you have a completely different picture. And the one stat that stands out the most to me is the TD to INT ratio. Golson had twice the number of TD's than he did picks and though Rees did have more TD's than picks in 2011, he didn't have twice that amount. Not really even close to that %. And Rees had both Eifert and Floyd to throw to in 2011. Golson only had Eifert and not really any other proven stars like Floyd. TJ was clutch and Daniels started becoming a threat late in the season but Eifert was his only safety net. Rees threw a lot of short, high percentage passes and guys like Floyd and Eifert (and his RB on those swing passes and shuttle passes) were able to use their athleticism to get a lot of yards out of them. I like Rees and I know he has improved from 2 years ago. But losing Golson hurts. Not just because of his arm but also because of his mobility and his leadership that he was starting to show last year. I had big hopes for him and I hope he can get back in. Kids made mistakes and he should be punished but I hope it doesn't ruin his life.

I expect recruiting to suffer, its just human nature after our star QB goes down to rules & regulations--

I expect the staff--which has held together so well for FOUR years----i expect the staff to IMPLODE after our 8 or at best 9-4 season.

Recruiting is going to be damaged--our winning prospects for at least the next two years will be heavily damaged--our staff will likely bail if at all possible.

As an ND alum--and following this program longer then many on this site have been alive--i have to say this is the final blow and a truly devestating one, to what has been a NIGHTMARISH off season--one like i have never seen before at ND.

I agree it's not an apples to apples comparison and Golson brings an athleticism to the position that Rees could only dream about. My point was simply the season is not lost. I can agree with that. Tommy will be able to manage the offense, he will be able to read the defense, but his arm and lack of mobility worry me. He is good for a few plays/game but the Miami and BYU games are perfect examples of why he was not the starter last year. Even the Pitt game, he didn't come in and bail Everett out like he did early in the season. I love Golson's passes, some of them were a thing of beauty. Nothing pretty about Tommy's passes. But I think we can still win the majority of our games simply because of our D, running backs and OL, and Tommy being able to keep cool and manage the game. I don't see a NC game next season and possibly not a BCS game but I think we can get 9 wins.

I don't agree with any of that. Kelly knows how to handle the offense when he doesn't have either an experienced QB or doesn't have a great QB. He will run the ball as much as the defense will allow and rely on our own defense as much as he can. I doubt we get 11 or 12 wins but we could definitely get 9-10 wins. Tommy can manage the game and we have some real talent at RB and our OL should be one of the best in the country. I don't think our coaching staff will implode at all and recruiting shouldn't be damaged too badly because Tommy will only have 1 year of eligibility left so anyone who commits will know that Tommy won't be their QB in 2014.

This wouldn't surprise me at all. He has gotten better from what I have seen of practices and he has the mobility that we lose with Golson not being the starter. In fact, I think he is a better runner than Golson. I don't recall Golson having a 79 yard run (or however long it was). Kelly may have to go with a 2 QB system this year. Not ideal but they are both very different types of QB so it can be done. On one hand, I think Kelly should just say f*ck it and play Malik because he is likely to be the starter in 2014 if Hendrix doesn't start this year and doesn't come back for a 5th year or if Gunner doesn't rethink his decision to transfer. But on the other hand, I don't think he is ready and Tommy/Andrew are our best options to win this year.

I wouldn't go that far. Losing EG will be a tough blow. But not bad enough to start thinking it would have been better to have lost every game last season (or to lose every game this season) if things could just be normal. Because that wouldn't be normal. We have had some rough years of late but nothing as bad as losing every game. Losing EG is tough because the QB is the only player other than the center who touches the ball every time he is on the field. Losing AL was bad but he was just 1 piece on the defense. The QB is the offense. He decides (with the coach's plays) who gets the ball. He decides when to tuck it and run, when to check out of a play, etc. No other player on the entire team has to do as much as the QB. So losing a good one sucks. But we have a great D and some pretty good offensive weapons so I think we will be ok. Maybe not as good as last year but I don't think that was going to happen anyway. Luckily Kelly has 3 months to get his backup ready to go.

Agree...I thought he was going to win the job last year, but it was clear by the end why he didn't....EG is something to watch. Anyway if AH gets the nod...I hope he fixed his "blind spot" on crossing routes...

BTW, I still love Tommy...I've never seen a "closer" used at the QB position, but no denying he brought it in clutch time. I trust the coaches whatever they do...but it feels alot better from my family room when the QB can run it and throw it...
