Forced redshirt with losing a year of eligibility on top of that.

Typically you get 5 to play 4. He will get 4 to play 4 with one of those being the forced redshirt.

Not really. A red shirt gives you 5 years to play 4. If he is not released from his NLI, he gets 4 years to play 3. So basically he loses his freshman season altogether but doesn't get to get it back after his senior year. Now for super talents like EV (Nix, Tuitt, etc), a 5th year is not usually needed but I'm not sure if he gets to practice with another institution, just no games or if he can not join another football team until his 1 year is up.

It's pretty harsh. Athletes normally have 5 years to play 4 seasons. By breaking his NLOI, Vanderdoes will only have 3 years to play 3 seasons. He'll be one injury away from having lost half of the college eligibility.

EV's apparent willingness to endure that harsh penalty in order to avoid stepping on ND's campus is what puzzles me the most. He either doesn't understand the gravity of his situation, or something happened to really turn him against us.

So.. it's especially bad if (God forbid) an injury or something kept him from playing one of those three remaining years... he would be in a really bad spot.

If he disregards his LOI, he is basically counting on each of his 3 years going without a hitch.

That's my hope. They may just be playing a game of chicken with ND's coaching staff; see if a little negative publicity would cause them to release Eddie from his NLOI.

I can't otherwise explain their apparently cavalier attitude toward the penalties at stake.

Eddie doesn't apparently want to come, we don't know why. He's trying to get released from his NLI, Notre Dame has said no so he's appealing through the NCAA. That's all we know, we think.
