Going way out a limb there Mikey.

I also think that the staff likes the flexibility that some guys bring to the Oline. The philosophy seems to be get the 5 best lineman on the field and if they need a little teaching at a certain position Hiestand will get that done. I am starting to think that Hiestand was not just a good hire but a phenomenal one.

I thought after the Bama game the coaches inidicated that they really do need 2 tackles of a larger size. IIRC, that would seem to imply that some of the guys that are a bit smaller comparatively would be unlikely to be outside.

Update to this ... Steve thinks we would also take Damien Mama as a potential 5th OL (or maybe even 6th, with Braden Smith) this cycle.

It's so interesting to me that the staff seems to be focused on interior OL rather than tackles this cycle. That the staff would take two tackles and three or even four interior OL in the 2014 class suggests to me that reports that McGovern and Bivin are earmarked for interior OL spots are exaggerated ... my guess is that, while the staff feels that McGovern and Bivin CAN play inside if necessary, they'd prefer to put those guys at tackle. Just my own personal inference though; could be mistaken.

Well if we were to add Bars and Smith to what we already have in this class I would say Byrne and Mustipher are the only definite interior guys. Bars is a definite tackle while Smith and Nelson would be swing guys (though both are being recruited at tackle).

I believe Smith is being recruited as an interior guy, and he is ranked as an interior guy. Not saying he couldn't play tackle, but I don't think we are recruiting him as a tackle.

I think Smith could make one hell of a 3-4 DE. He's very athletic for being that big.

Not suggesting this will happen, but I really think he could be a stud on D.

You could be right, but I'm almost sure it's been said on pay sites that he is being recruited as a Tackle. I mean he fits the mould of a tackle better than our two current tackles I would say. If he were to come here whether he plays inside or outside would likely depend on the depth chart imo.

I haven't seen 247 answer the question directly but one of the II guys said that we are recruiting him currently as a OT

ann arbor buddy is hearing now that Bars is a lean to them....conflicting reports surprise surprise.

"four star OT Alex Bars told 247's Ryan Callahan that he's got a final five in mind and may take one more visit before deciding; he won't name any leaders, but the consensus on 247 is that he'll choose Michigan, but NOtre Dame where is father played LB is a serious contender"

Pretty sure he's ranked as an OT on Rivals and the staff over there says he's an OT....Last I checked...

maybe the quote above was an older quote, my buddy just sent it to me last night.

The "conensus" they are using is the Crystal Ball which has four people picking Michigan with two of them being Michigan writers. The only one I would actually put any weight on is Barton Simmons and he even says he really doesn't know, he is just guessing.

it's not "reporting", it's just them guessing. It's a new feature they added and it's just to make things fun and interesting.

I don't think anybody truly knows with Bars. Wouldn't surprise me if he picked ND, Tennessee, or Michigan. Not expecting him to pick Michigan, but it wouldn't surprise me, they've long been in his top group of schools and his brother plays there.

I'm starting to think Tennessee might be the team to watch out for. He's from the state and has called himself a homebody, and he might just want to do his own thing and go a different route than his brothers or father. Not to mention Tennessee is actually doing a really impressive job of recruiting right now considering where they came from the past few years. I know I certainly didn't expect them to land 5* Jalen Hurd or kids with serious offer lists like Orlando Brown Jr., De'Andre Payne, Todd Kelly, or Daniel Helm. Butch Jones seems to be on a roll right now and might just be the hire to bring Tennessee back to where they were in the 90's and early 2000's.

Per Sampson, he is scheduled to talk with Hiestand today. Hiestand spoke with him last week. Also Chuck Martin has been in communication with Alex and the family. Trust in Hiestand.

I predict a commitment tonight boys. (Obviously no info...perhaps I should just put that in my sig as I never have any info).

His continued and constant communication with the coaches is obviously a plus either way.

Sampson just posted that he thinks the staff likes Bars more than Jamarco Jones.
