With the 19th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the New York Giants select:
Barkevious Mingo, DE, LSU
With the loss of Osi to Atlanta, the Giants are left with a void at DE behind Justin Tuck and Jason Pierre-Paul. With other holes to fill and an eye on drafting Desmond Trufant, Barkevious Mingo slipping to #19 is too good to pass up.
With several voids on the defensive side of the ball, Barkevious Mingo represents several things that Jerry Reese looks for.
#1. Jerry Reese is notorious for drafting best player available regardless of the position. His 4.58 40, 37 in vertical, and 6.84 3-cone drill will place him a top best available at #19.
#2. Barkevious Mingo has elite athleticism, length, and speed for his size and as a pass rusher. With players such as Justin Tuck and JPP lining up in the middle, the Giants will seek to present mismatches anywhere they can and Mingo will allow them to create the havoc up front they lacked with Osi declining. His ability to line up against TE's will also serve to help in the drafting of Mingo.
Mingo has drawn comparisons to Demarcus Ware and Bruce Irvin and despite his weakness in strength and run stuffing, look for the Giants to draft him if he has fallen this far. With most sites predicting Mingo to get drafted within the top 15, falling to #19 will be a blessing in disguise.
With the recent additions of Mike Patterson and Cullen Jenkins, the Giants are looking to revamp the front 7 and Mingo will be a valuable asset within the new look front 7.
