I just watched the video, what a joke. I've played for some bastard coaches over the years, but this behavior is beyond over the line. I hope he never lands another coaching gig the rest of his life.

Gil-the Lithuanian player quoted- is a former student of mine. I didn't understand why he had transferred... Now it makes much more sense. He is a very kind and soft-spoken kid without any family here to support him. This is atrocious and breaks my heart. Gil could rip that guy in two.

I have no problem with the verbal abuse... You expect that if you are around big time ball.

But you don't put your hands in kids in that way. Unacceptable.

Yikes.

Jokes about Greyhammer's Freudian Slip aside, Rice should be fired immediately. AD should probably go with him. If you can't quickly and easily determine that your subordinates behavior was fire-able when it is this egregious then you too should be canned.

Eh. Is this guy an *******? Yes. Is his coaching style likely counter productive? Yes.

But he isn't that far over the line. I think I'm not too bothered with this because they are college students. But I would have a huge problem with this if these were kids.

He's a coach. He's supposed to coach, mold, train, etc. He's teaching these kids (despite what your definition of kid is) that it's ok to throw crap at people, verbally and physically assault people, make homophobic slurs, etc. How is that acceptable in ANY WAY?

If these kids then think it's ok they go and perpetuate it themselves on their own children or perhaps the teams they coach in the future.

Abuse is cyclical and needs to be snuffed out as soon as it is identified or it will persist.

His actions were very Mark Mangino-esque.

The AD needs to be gone too. He saw this video in December and did nothing, and told the media afterwards that there is no way Mike Rice wouldn't be with the program next year.

He played a role in Murdock's "whistleblower" firing. The AD needs to go.

I'm a huge bobby knight guy.

Yelling, swearing, ok.

Throwing balls, pushing, and kicking?
That just makes no darn sense.

No one can justify that. Because there's nothing to justify. This guy is a punk.

It's not even Kelly I would be worried about on our Coaching staff lol. I've heard some things about Heistand from friends inside Tennessee's program. Nothing physical obviously, that's a big no-no. But I had two team managers tell me he was the meanest, most confrontational, and most filth-mouthed coach they've ever seen/heard.

Now me? I like that in a OL coach. But other people feel differently.

Yeah, I played for some pretty tough guys. However, they never put their hands on us. I kinda laughed off the verbal stuff.

This guy is just way over the line. Players don't wanna play for a guy like that. And any parent that sees this video will never let their kid play for him. He's done.

As a coach, your job is to not only teach basketball (or whatever sport) but to teach kids how to become men. Belitting, bullying, being physical do NOT help these kids become men. Bad form.

My opinion on this is going to be wildly unpopular but here it is anyways.

If people saw Kelly's purple faced tirade 2 years ago, imagine what they think happens behind the scenes.

This, unfortunately, happens in a lot of big time programs. And for all you tough guys out there saying that you would slug your coach? Really? You are a kid. On scholarship, some who would never even dream of affording a decent education. You slug the coach, you gone. You would be black listed faster than you can spit.

This matter was handled internally in December with whatever discipline was handed out. 3 games and $50K fine and rehab. This Murdock character was looking for a pay day, plain and simple.
The fact that Rutgers was heading to the BIG meant that the donors called in and said "Take care of this" because you can't have this when moving to the big time. Had this man won more games and had Rutgers not dumped the BigEast this guy would still be there.

Do I think this guy is a turd? Hell yes. If that was my kid I'd be hanging his *** up at the basket. Rutgers knew what they were getting when they hired him from Robert Morris, Fordham declined to offer him a job because they weren't comfortable with his tactics.

In my opinion, I think the AD fired the coach to save his own skin. I think the AD should now be held to the fire for his failure to properly address this situation when it was initially revealed. He tried to sugar coat it until it blew up.

You know what they say... the cover-up is usually worse than the crime itself.

But it wasn't covered up... 3 game suspension and $50K in fines..

VALENTIIIIIIIII!

Ha, no, in all seriousness, I heard him today talking about this and almost started to agree with him. I think the real issue is whether or not this guy changed after the December punishment. If this guy was still incorporating these tactics into his coaching style then, for me, cya later, and the AD too.

I understand that there are other outside variables going on, including trustees, donors, etc. But I don't care if Murdock was looking for a pay day. The coaching style was exposed - and it wasn't working.

I forgot to add that part, if things haven't changed then Adios. BTW since we are in the same radio footprint we should get together for some drinks sometime, preferably watching ND.

So glad this a**clown is gone.

Agreed, but the video shows just how bad it was. It's disgusting. 3 games and $50k= a joke.

$50k + an additional ~10% of his salary ($65k) for the 3 games for a total of $115k is NOT small peanuts. That's a total fine of of over $100,000.00... that's pretty darn consequential anyone not making millions... and Mike Rice was definitely not making millions.

So I really disagree with the premise (not saying you're saying this, but I've read it/heard it elsewhere) that the AD "covered up" or "didn't care about the kids" or "didn't take it seriously." It's pretty obvious to me that from suspending a guy and fining him 20% of his salary that he did take it serious, just maybe not seriously enough. If you lost 2.5 months worth of paychecks, it would be big to you and send a message.

It's pretty clear to me that by seeing condensed footage with all of the verbal/physical assault back-to-back-to-back it gives us a different impression than watching hours of undoctored practice footage where there is maybe an incident once a practice. So the AD opted for a big fine, small suspension, and rehabilitation... giving a guy a second chance... rather than immediate termination. It was the compassionate thing, and the wrong choice. But it's not like he swept it under the rug and he doesn't deserve to be fired just because we, as a society with hindsight, don't think it was harsh enough.

Why does the video need to be titled "US Marine goes Mental?" So unnecessary.

Yeah I agree. Especially b/c the person who posted it is a marine as well. I saw it tweeted on Twitter (@RainnWilson) right as I was reading the end of this thread, so I didn't really think about it.

Honest question, if Mike Rice had brought Rutgers out of the nowhere and they won a share of the Big East championship and made the finals in the Big East tourney. Then took them to the Final Four would the reaction be different?

I know there are a lot of "what ifs" in there but would results change the view on a coaches approach?

Players have come out to defend Mike Rice. I was one of the first to post saying that Rice's coaching method (or anger issues) were intolerable. But now I am wondering if we (or at least I) was too quick to judge.

Two Rutgers players defend fired coach Mike Rice

Yeah, some of the quotes confirm assumptions I made in post #57 above..

"I feel if people had a chance to see the other portions of practice, or had been at practice, their judgment would not be as severe," Johnson said. "I am not saying what he did wasn't wrong, because I do believe it was wrong. But it is also tough because it was a highlight reel of his worst moments."

Judge believes some of those moments come across worse on camera than they really were.

"Honestly, a lot of the things that have been seen have been taken out of context. A lot of things that aren't seen are when we grab him and kid around," Judge said. "Like I said before, when people ask me why did I play for him, I told them, 'He's a players' coach.'

"Mike was almost like a big brother. He would get on the floor with us and go through drills with us. He made it fun. When you have a big-brother type of figure, you know you can play around like that. I have grabbed Mike and put him in a headlock and we joke around and kid. That was the type of relationship he built with his players."

"He wasn't a guy we hated or despised," Judge said. "After practice, we would all go in the locker room and laugh. It was never a sad face or a hung head. What he did was he separated the court and he separated life. When we were on the court, we were on the court and locked in. That's why you see so many intense moments, because he was so locked-in on turning this program around. When we got in the locker room, we were a family. We laughed.

This is why I believe an attempt was made to rehabilitate by the AD; and this is why it makes no sense to be calling for the President's or AD's heads. They fined the guy roughly 20% of his salary and suspended him a couple games... that's a big punishment... maybe not strong enough for the public, but the public is pretty darn judgmental/reactionary before the facts are known.
