Choices: Laser start - laser finish; hand held start and finish; voluntary start - laser finish.

The National Football League (NFL) did not begin using partial electronic timing (started by hand, stopped electronically) at the NFL Scouting Combine until 1990. And they have continued that until today.

How old is this? I assume they've evolved since the 90s.

its hand time start with laser finish i believe .... meaning someone needs to push a button, aka based on personal reaction, to activate the laser trigger at the end of the 40 yds

Yup. Some places use a pad that starts the clock when your hand is lifted, but that can be gamed. Someone also has to make sure you're set for a secrond and aren't rocking -- can't electronically track that, realistically.

I'm certain when I was watching the combine the commentator stated it was hand start and electric finish.

Source: my questionable memory.

Lol, ok. How are they timing it at ND today? Is it the exact same way? If so, that's awesome. But I'm skeptical.

No. The NFL wanted to eliminate initial reaction time as being a significant elemement. So they went back to human start based upon foot movement, like a track start would be. It has been the same for almost 23 years. Call the NFL.

regardless there is a margin of error in everything -- if the pros didnt accept the method of timing at the pro days provided byh schools, then the schools wouldnt engage in it... therefore it could be reasonable to see Manti doesnt run a 4.8 which is all that matters in his case.... he ran under 4.8 therefore hes credited with less than 4.8 doesnt necessarily mean hes a 4.7

Todd McShay is good at what he does and he has no reason to help Te'o:

This brought to you by the knowledge bank of WakeUpEchoes, lol.

LOL, I was just frustrated because I had seen a tweet about Braxton's bench and didn't see anything on here, which I trust more than Twitter. But I saw a post in the middle of our discussions.

I'm hoping that it's the same at ND Pro Day and at the combine. Either way, I don't know how much it could change his stock really.

Just looking for some consistency in analyzing the times and if he in fact improved. Sorry for ruffling some feathers but thank you guys who provided clarification (although I'm still unsure how ND is timing today). I'll take a lap for poking the bear.

Todd McShay also says 21 reps of 225 bench for Manti Te'o during live shot on SportsCenter.

Just checked with NLF headquarters and they said that 40-times are timed thusly:

John Madden shouts BOOM! at which time the player takes off with Madden continuing to count one-mississippi, two-mississippi, ...etc until the player makes it to the 40 yard line
