Wait a minute! You are comparing the Heisman Race to winning a starting spot on a college, D1 football team, specifically Notre Dame? So you know I am going to have to whip out the C-word. That is right, conflation! One has nothing to do with the other! At all.
Honestly, the national insanity over picking the most popular quarterback or occasionally running back, has nothing to do with real world, down in the dirt, hit 'em till you hurt, college football. Are we in agreement on that?
Here is the real moneymaker: YOU DO NOT REALLY WANT JAYLON BEATING DANNY OUT!
Why?
1) Likelihood of serious injuries (until the body is used to the punishment at that level), or getting beat badly is higher (with no game experience);
2) Seriously wreaks havoc with the depth charts (not to mention morale);
3) Means that your program is taking a big step backward, when a completely inexperienced freshman can replace a three year seasoned vet, even if the freshman has boat loads of superior talent. End of freshman year, may mean all good for the program, but never right out of the chute. You remember most though Charlie was building a solid linebacker corps, with the Smiths and Co. It took what Manti did late in the first game against Nevada, specifically when he ran Colin Kaepernick down from behind, after whiffing on him, to get an idea about how weak the linebacker corps actually was.
