I watched "The Philadelphia Story" a few days ago. It's one of my favorite movies. Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart turn in top-notch performances. The script is one of the smartest and funniest ever written, IMO. When people say "they don't make 'em like they used to" they are talking about films like this. Even if you think you don't like old, black-and-whites, do yourself a favor and watch it.

i guess you misunderstood me. its not that it was unbelievable for the movies concerns. i cant believe that in this country there are camps in the swamps with people that kind of govern themselves in a lord of the flies kind of way. opened my eyes.

that level of poverty, yet, freedom, is staggering to me.

Gotcha, yeah quite a different life style.

From what I am seeing here after hearing and reading a lot about Zero Dark Thirty, most of the workup was about the controvesy over condoning torture, which was made up by the media, and maybe a little by the film distribution company. As the movie treated it neutrally, and all the information was in a file unearthed by detective work, that aspect became a bit of a non-self starter, didn't it? Besides, true stories, no matter how good, don't always make the best action movies; Fair Game, for instance. I really was amazed at the way it laid out, but if you were watching it for action, not in the cards. I guess it is just not an issue for me, because I see these movies with gratuitous deaths by firearm, rockets and chainsaws, and I just don't care.

Anyone see Take Shelter, A Dangerous Method, Sanctuary, or Carnage?

Right now I'm watching some sort of television docu-drama about the most exciting power outage of the year.

Bob D and Black Irish, currently tied for the lead in the funniest post for the thread. Both are headed back toward the clubhouse, from rounding the turn at number nine . . .

Just watched The Green Mile again. Hadn't seen it in a few years. Duncan's performance is beyond great. That movie always leaves me wondering how he'd never hit it big earlier.

That and Shawshank, two Steven King stories adapted to the big screen, both, if I remember, got SCREWED out of academy awards.

Yes I used little "a's". Those films and a few other instances are travesties that I thought were perpetrated by the motion picture academy that just made me quit paying attention. The Hurt Locker made up for it a little.

Yeah, I totally agree. Those two films got screwed at the awards, as did Duncan for best supporting actor. One of the best performances ever and no award??? Shawshank's hard to beat too. Great story and acting. King can flat out weave a tale.

BTW, I found out recently that Duncan passed away a few months ago from a heart attack. That's why my wife & I watched The Green Mile this week.

It was horrible. Must have been most truly congestive heart failure. Started six months before it ended, if you understand my meaning. Did you know he started out as a bodyguard? And do you know who's body he guarded?

Gangster Squad-good action, good actors, some of the gun fights were pretty unrealistic but it was overall pretty good and worth the price of admission.
Broken City- I thought I was really going to like the film alot. I normally enjoy both Walberg and Crowe. The movie was good and different than what I expected after watching the trailers, but I came away feeling like it didn't meet my expectations.

Duncan worked as a bodyguard for Bruce Willis who helped Duncan break into acting. Good on him.

I knew he lingered for some time after the heart attack, but didn't know it was that long. Horrible thing. Yeah, I knew he'd started as a bodyguard, but don't know who he worked for. Just looked it up. Some big names there. The guy was a heck of an actor and by all accounts, a real gentle giant and likeable man.

I'm a firm believer that musicals should be relegated to actual live performances, not movies.

Aaaaannnnddd that dudes shouldn't be discussing their love of a musical with other dudes. Lol!

Hey, Hog, what do you usually do when you have the boys over?

Apparently, all the cast and crew got violently ill during the making of this film, everyone except Bogart and director John Huston. The rumor is that Bogart and Huston drank so damn much that they killed whatever bacteria they picked up from the local food and water. Great story, whether it's true or not.

I just watched "Kill the Irishman" which is based on the life on Cleveland hoodlum Danny Green. It's not a masterwork, but a solid movie that holds your interest.

Just saw Silver Linings Playbook. Really enjoyed it. Django is my favorite movie Ive seen this year but this would probably be second. All the acting was really top notch, nice to see Chris Tucker giving a great performance and I was surprised that Bradley Cooper was so good having only seen him in The Hangover before. Just a really interesting, well put together film.

I agree, I had no idea Bradley Cooper was capable of that kind of performance. He was fantastic! So likeably ill.

I saw Lincoln last night and I was stunned in spite of myself by how well acted and scripted it was. A movie like that, about political wrangling, is going to bore the sh!t out of you if it isn't; I was kind afraid it would be like watching C-Span. It wasn't. Daniel Day-Lewis is transfixing as Lincoln, and Tommy Lee Jones is almost as good as the fiery abolitionist. And both are made better by the glorious screenwriting. If you like witty dialogue and virtuoso acting, go see that movie.

Missed this in the thread. Kill the Irisman was a movie everyone on this site should watch. True(ish) story. I remeber when it happened. I knew some minor players. Now for the trivia question: What high school did Danny Green attend till he dropped out? Ask Jimmy Byrne!

Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln was mindblowing.

I watched the prep they did on this movie and it was fabulous. There is some basis in fact that they even got the voice close, can you immagine?

I just watched my favorite Independent film the other night again...
"The Wind That Shakes The Barley"
A fantastic film about the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. A great and tragic tale of two brothers...fictional characters...but certainly a fine film and worth anyone's time to watch. If you EVER take the Alamo's advice on something...do it now...
Go watch the movie...I have it on DVD after seeing it on IFC a few years back.
