Who is Likely Next (2013)

Do you think that . . .

Guide me.

I would like to take the opportunity to address you, Mike:

Pissed doesn't enter into it.

Everybody we are talking about is highly rated.

Eddie V is particularly highly rated. He is the endgame.

Then with Smythe committing today, it is the coaches job to get all the other moving parts into place on NSD.

So, it then is a sales game. If a recruit like Fitts or Hollins gives good signals, Coach Kelly is on the plane for an in home. If another recruit like Pervot has grade problems, or shows no interest, we will keep the doors open, but put the effort where the best chances at the best payoff lay.

This whole thing is to fluid for anyone to really know. Looks like we will be making spots available this year. Where last year we left at the alter, and had a few extra.

The other thing is that if we have 28 that want to come in as opposed to the 25 recruit NCAA limit and we can free up the scholarships, we can count up to five against last year, (because we were under last year too, and that is the number of early enrollees we have this year.)

I understand the EV situation.

Is it just a case of keeping all the balls in the air with the others and see which two drop first or are we in a situation where we can pluck the two we want most. this won't be the case until after next weekend.

I think they take the next 2 who want to sign from Prevot, Hollins, Fitts,,,,, and then if EV waits till NSD to communicate, they will wait, and take him (creating a decision for 5th years if there are no meds/transfers).

Who do you think will transfer/take a medical though? We will almost certainly be bringing back Watt, Martin, Fox, and Carlo. With those guys coming back, by my count (see below) we are currently at 84, leaving us with just one more spot (assuming no more de-commitments). So where is that extra spot coming from?

WR (11)
Daniels
Ferguson
D. Smith
Massa
Robinson
Jones
Brown
Fuller
Onwualu
Neal
Hunter

TE (5)
Niklas
Koyack
Welch
Heuerman
Smythe

OL (15)
Z. Martin
Stanley
Elmer
McGovern
Watt
Hegarty
N. Martin
Lombard
Hanratty
Harrell
Montelus
Nichols
Heggie
Bivin
McGlinchey

ST (2)
Daly
Brindza

RB (6)
Atkinson III
McDaniel
Carlisle
Mahone
Bryant
Folston

QB (5)
Golson
Kiel
Hendrix
Rees
Zaire

DL (10)
Day
Hounshell
Utupo
Matuska
Nix
Springmann
Schwenke
Tuitt
Jones
Rochell

LB (13)
Shembo
Williams
Okwara
Rabasa
Randolph
Calabrese
Moore
Spond
Fox
Councell
Grace
J. Smith
Deeb

CB (8)
Jackson
Brown
J. Atkinson
Butler
Russell
Shumate
L. Wood
Luke

S (9)
Farley
Collinsworth
Hardy
Redfield
Kinlaw
Baratti
Turner
Badger
Prosise

For a total of 84. Am I miscounting or double counting or something? If not, are you guys really so sure Nichols will take a medical (he seems to be the only even potential candidate)? Or do you guys think someone is transferring?

Could be a medical from Nichols or Welch. Could be a transfer. Could be only taking one of Fox / Carlo.

All we know is every site is reporting 2 spots, and I guess we will just have to take them at their word for knowing way more than us and we'll see how it unfolds on NSD and beyond.

I'm thinkiing Tate as well. Several "insiders" have also hinted at a transfer. I have no idea who, but people seem to want to talk about Hendrix a bunch. I think he stays personally, but I do believe we'll see somebody transfer. There are several that would fit logic, especially in the DB space. I assuming the coaches feel they can take two more and still bring back the 5th years they want. If we have a blue chip moment on NSD (big Eddie), I think they part with a 5th year ILB.

Just my gut feel and opinion.

I have heard nothing about Lo Wood. Real tough injury in a position that is upgraded quite a bit. Going to be interesting to see how everything unfolds from now through the summer.

There's always the fact that we really don't know what the staff is thinking and what is in the works. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with three spots.

I see 17 scholly's for just four db spots. Seems heavy to me.

Just guessing, but that could be due to the massive hole in the depth chart after Weis, and over recruiting because of the decommits/transfer/depth issues.

First of all I am having problems with the whole ball plucking picture.

Second, that isn't how this staff rolls. They will try to make an assessment of how real the interest is and make a spot. I think they would make heaven and earth move if they thought they had more that two really interested.

What about Massa, Badger, Turner, Brown or Hunter. In addition to Wood or Tate. Let alone Hegarty.

Is Massa coming back? What about Badger, he is burried? Turner, getting any liftoff? Brown, maybe a transfer candidate, being passed over? What about THunterJr? A broken femur with a rod is a really big thing. I mean people are crippled, and can die from that.

I have a feeling the coaching staff is sitting on three to four. Remember Kelly wasn't happy with a few freshmen not exerting more for special teams . . .

All of us are BSing, but I'm intuiting that the staff believes that in a pinch they can survive fine with the incoming linebackers like Smith, plus the veterans plus just one of Fox and Carlo if it comes to Vanderdoes or not.

I'm also intuiting that both a transfer and a medical are likely. If my intuitions are any good [I'm about as accurate as a coinflip], then we could have two spots "in hand" and the 5th year one-vs-both ILB situation to hold up our sleeve for the Big Man from California.

I think you are probably right. I keep forgetting that TP told us he knew of at least one transfer. If the staff knows of it as well, then that explains where the extra spot is coming from.

I've no particular inside info, but when was the last time we didn't have at least one transfer/flunkout in the spring.
Happens every year.

I just realized that I have NSD off from clinicals. Looks like I'll be working on my butt cheek indentations on the ol' couch. Wahoo!

So how much room we got left? One spot plus one more for EV?

No way we take 26 right?

EE's can count against last year to get under the NCAA cap of 25, so, we certainly could take 26. The 85 total scholarships is more the issue at this point. As it stands, per Irishroo's tally, we're at 84 right now. But that figures a 5th year for Calabrese and no transfers/medical hardships.

I am off as well. Looking forward to my beer and whisky drinking.

This.

I just picked up a bottle of Ducks Unlimited Special Edition Jack Daniels Single Barrel. I'm thinking it will be cracked on NSD. Can't wait, brother.

I would like to return to the CAT/DOG/WILL/MIKE thing for 1 second.

I know some of you are discussing the differences between positions, and I'm well aware of the fundamental contrast between the 2, but one of the coaches (the actually one who said it is slipping my mind at the moment) said earlier this year that the CAT and DOG position would be interchangeable. From down to down, the same player will play CAT and then DOG the next down. Those are the type of players we are recruiting to play in Diaco's defense right now; athletes that can rush the passer on one down, then drop and cover a TE or RB the next. I think the same interchangeability can be said for MIKE and WILL, but that's just speculation.

I have heard that this is true. The main difference between the 2 is that the Mike is the leader and calls the play but the assignments are similar.

Sounds like a nice JD. Let us know how it tastes.

Diaco and Kelly have both said at great length that they are mirror images of each other.

More is going to be done to disguise the defense.

Jack of all trades, master of none?

Probably the best spot to place this:

Irish Sports Daily Forums

Were you looking for a summary? I forget who it is that always posts premium stuff they can't read. If that's the case...

Hollins - Was set on UCLA, really eye opening visit, should know more shortly on where ND stands. My prediction: UCLA.

Fitts - Great visit, distance could be a very big factor, not a long time to develop bonds here. My prediction: UCLA.

Vanderdoes - Great visit, sources indicated ND might be a front runner with UCLA. Might not visit 'Bama and might be a true NSD decision. My prediction: No idea. Could see it being ND or UCLA... maybe Bama if he makes that visit. The California coaches will be hounding him this whole next week and there's always a chance USC could get back into the picture too.

Isaac - USC is recruiting him really, really hard. May or may not visit ND. His wavering has more to do with being uneasy with USC than anything else... so if they shore that up he should stick with the Trojans. My prediction: Too soon to tell, whether he makes the visit or not will be a huge tell. Right now USC is odds on favorite by a large margin.

Prevot - Looks like he's still on to visit and the only thing that could prevent that would be a commitment from Hollins or him being locked in to TA&M. My prediction: if he visits, Notre Dame. If not, then he's set on TA&M.

Really? Because I thought they already had the tickets and what not (not sure how these visits are organized). But this would be excellent news.

It would be interesting if Fitts committed first. I wonder if they would take one of Isaac/Prevot/Hollins, knowing that they are holding a spot for EV?

I was thinking the same thing ... that's the one situation where I feel like every course of action you could take is problematic, unless the staff knows of extra schollies that will become available due to transfer/medical issues (if they do, we could just take Fitts, one of Isaac/Prevot/Hollins, and Vanderdoes ... if our scholarship situation stays the way it is I don't see how we can take 3 more 2013 guys though).
