Did Schaap just slide in there that Manti was composed to a point he felt it was more a story than the truth?
Yes he did and thats what a good 'cub reporter' does when he realizes the truth is not a very good story-plant that little seed that this kid is still lying for more coverage/ratings/overall asshattedness on their part-good 'ol' espn. Talk about laughable losers.

Not sure I understand this. I'm not a huge Schaap fan because I think he can come off as smug, but I thought he did more tonight to give Manti a fair shake than anyone else has so far. What's your beef with how he handled it?
The smugness as you refer to came off as dissapointment in the truth to me. The story ends with truth and cub reporter Olsen is out of a job until the next big thing. This is Jeremy Schapp espn-are you kidding me?

It's funny to watch people blindly massacre Manti just because they hate ND. They hate that this story has turned into Manti being the victim, despite all of the proof that has come out in the past 24 hours.

Now it's things like "I don't believe a single word he said" and "He sat on this for 2 days and didn't go on camera."

All I can think about now is why do I care? Why did I ever care? I have an extreme hatred and anger toward people who form opinions based on what they have heard others say or without researching a single thing for themselves. When I see these people, it makes me want to rage.

This is why I can't listen to talk radio. Most of the time, even the host doesn't know what he's talking about. It takes all of me not to call in and let them know how I feel.

But now I know, even though I always have, that it stems from jealousy. Jealousy of the attention ND gets, jealousy of ND as a school, jealousy of how many people love the place. Any chance to kick ND down, and they will jump on it. Anything to make them less jealous of Our Mother.

Tonight, I resign. I give up. They can hate all they want. I will know the truth. I don't care anymore.

Go Irish.

Both Kornheiser and Wilbon agreed with this line of thinking on PTI today. Said the only people he has to prove anything to are NFL decision-makers.

They probably read my post at 9:58 am

http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/leprechaun-lounge/84692-lennay-kekua-hoax-15.html#post887363

...

GMs and Owners don't care squat a phantom girlfriend. They want to know if his performance wast because of the "better SEC talent" or because he was emotionally distraught over a personal issue be it gullibility or complicity?

He played with intensity immediately following for 2 months after the "death" but did not have the same intensity and performance 4 weeks after the "resurrection".

He said, He said is BS to those GMs looking at multimillion dollar decisions. They don't care what Manti tells Oprah, Rome, or the Grand Inquistor. They do care what he has to say to them, their coaches, and they're pyschiatrist.

And quite frankly that's the only session Manti has to prepare for - the multimillion dollar interview before a sharper bunch of people than a group of fans and angry journalists who are angry because they were inept and are now looking to punish Te'o for their shortcomings.

Post or PM details.

It was just more bantering back and forth. His original tweet was:

Bruce Feldman ‏@BFeldmanCBS
Was curious why Te'o never visited someone near death in hospital he cared abt so. Hearing "it never really crossed my mind"..WTH?!

Me :mad:BFeldmanCBS their relationship wasnt serious until after she recovered, you need to listen and read more before you get all crazy sir.

Then a DM from Bruce:

"But what you said contradicts with the timeline of the relationship as he told SI"

Tweet from me: @BFeldmanCBS Can you follow me so I can DM you back for an intelligent conversation sir? You can unfollow after.

Bruce then followed me:

@BFeldmanCBS ok...now following you.

DM convo: (Twitter only allows DMs to be shown from a certain point, so half of my conversation was cut off :(.....

ME: It was only a relationship via online or telephone, would that be enough to visit someone in the hospital? To leave your football team and spend thousands on a flight?

1h
ME :After the accident the relationship "supposedly" became serious right? and eventually blown out of proportion by all parties involved.

1h
Bruce: From reading what SI posted yesterday, Te'o made it sound like the relationship was very serious when she was in the coma and then came out

1h
Bruce: Also, him leaving the football team would've been after spring ball and flying from Chicago to LA doesn't cost thousands.

1h
Bruce: Again, I don't know what the truth is.. I'm just saying after all this from before, it's no stretch to be skeptical

59m
Bruce: This is the SI piece I reference for timeline Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax: Revisiting the interview - College Football - Pete Thamel - SI.com

59m
Me: I agree...but I think the skepticism has gotten so ridiculous that it almost seems that it must be the truth. Who is to say that maybe in...

58m
Me: Mantis mind that yeah, I think this girl could be everything I am looking for, this could be the one, But I have only known her online for..

57m
Me: a few months intimately, how could I explain leaving my football team and explain to the media/ family that I am going to see someone that..

57m
Me: I think I truly care about, that I have only met online. To him IMO, wasn't realistic. His feelings became more real after she came out of.

56m
Me: her coma and the hoax became more elaborate.

56m
Bruce: Him leaving in late April/May isn't going to require any explanation to media. No one is around the team then

55m
Me: Him leaving in late April/May to someone he thinks he may truly care about, but has only met online, may have not been ideal to him at time

54m
Me: I am just curious if you know much about the mormon lifestyle/LDS ways of life and if you have looked into it or touched on it at all?

53m
Me: I am one who fully thought Manti was in on this when the story broke, but the more and more I dig deeper into this, I understand it a little more that he is a victim

53m
Me: As crazy as it all sounds.

52m
Bruce: I don't know. It's a bizarre story all around.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Didn't get to ask what I wanted or dig deeper, and it sucks that we had a better conversation earlier but Twitter won't let me see those DMs prior to what I posted....but whatever. He seemed intrigued that I called him out on his tweet and he really wanted to talk about it. So good for him for being a normal guy and talk, so to say.

Geez, apparently losing respect for him is a poor thing to say on these boards...

As a young man who has grown up in South Bend, a lifetime ND fan, I had looked up to Manti more than any person in my life. He was my hero, my idol, my role model. I wanted my future child to be like Manti.

He was very naive, but he was also tricked pretty convincingly by some loon. I feel terrible for Manti and the embarrassment he's now had to go through.

With that said, he did lie. He did embellish. There's no denying that. I just feel sort of betrayed that I put so much faith and trust into this person, only to have it all based on what turns out to be a lie.

As more info comes out, the more it seems Manti is telling the truth... but he will always be down a few notches for me.

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. George Washington DID cut down the cherry tree.

Feel better now?

You're betrayed because Te'o was naive and embellished his decription of a relationship to a parent?

What's even more incredible is "I put so much faith and trust into this person, only to have it all based on what turns out to be a lie."

In your earlier posts you noted you grew up in S.B., lifelong ND fan, followed Te'o's career, even wanted your kids (that you don't have) to grow up like Te'o.

But now your telling us your "relationship" with Te'o obviously only goes back to September as that's when the girl friend first became a news item. Your "relationship" with Te'o couldn't have started earlier as you clearly stated, "only to have it all based on what turns out to be a lie." The only "lie" is connected to the GF.

His college decision struggle to come to a different religious culture AND cold weather enviroment than that in which he was raised wasn't a lie, his football career wasn't a lie, his GPA wasn't a lie, his community service wasn't a lie, he compassion to others wasn't a lie, his leadership wasn't a lie ... but you would have us believe that he must be the first person in history to have their trust taken advantage in a relationship so you're betrayed.

He embellished a detail about his girl friend to a parent so EVERYTHING you admired is based on a lie ...

Your posts are either lies or you're more naive than Virginia, but then she was 8.

And don't worry about your kids. If you're going to throw Te'o out with the bathwater over this in contrast to his lifetime accomplishments, you're not going to have a relationship with a woman long enough for her to deliver a child.

So did the interview turn out favorably for Manti? Sorry, was a long day had to catch some shut eye

He seems to have answered the questions. Favorably though is in the eye of the beholder.

The hoaxer has fessed up and there are people that won't accept that.

Doyel at CBSsports believes Notre Dame lied about this.

BOOM! Although I have not agreed with you at times BGIF, sometimes this board lacks intelligence or a coherent thought at times....thank you.

Let me get this straight:

You have a "relationship" with Feldman but ... you never met him, have no pictures, "lost" the best part of the relationship, "not gonna lie", "I was stoked", "didn't get to ask or dig deeper", "seemed intrigued" ...

Somebody cue Deadspin. They have another scoop.

You're not alone.

Mrs. BGIF differs with me frequently. Years ago she gave me a shirt that says, "If a man's alone in the forest, ... he's still wrong!"

If Te'o never says anything about having a girlfriend back in September this is never talked about. He is the one that is responsible for this becoming such a big story. I don't understand why he felt the need to lie about anything.

And I still don't understand why these people made such an elaborate hoax to make him feel like he was in a much deeper relationship than what he was really in...

My two copper discs:

Schaap's questions, from the little I saw, were on point and went to the heart of the matter.

When giving his answer, in particular the answer if he was in on it, Teo said "no". Schaap paused and let the silence go-which is an excellent technique.

The person who is truthful allows the truth to speak for itself while the one who fabricates feels the need to continue to fabricate and further convince the listener. Teo stuck with his original answer and was satisfied he fully answered the question.

I still think Te'o would have been better served coming out right away or not at all. It seems like many still don't believe his full story.

Rival fans and Internet losers are NEVER going to be swayed. This helped for the casual fans and anyone without an agenda. Other than those people, you're not going to find people that hate ND to be swayed at all.

Get used to it. But the fact that manti showed Schapp the apology from that clown shows people with a brain that he didn't partake in the hoax. But the losers who hate ND just cause they hate ND. You'll never convince them...

After watching the ESPN clip where Jeremy discusses the interview, seems to me that Jeremy made fairly clear Manti appeared to him to be truthful. I think that most people who are just "interested" in the story will believe Manti's account now. But those who love drama and only want controversy will find a way to still argue Manti and/or ND are somehow lying. Cannot do anything about that. But my guess is this story will now start to quickly die down as far as the press is concerned.

+1 I will get at least 5-10 Manti hate related text throughout the day from SEC/ACC fans. They are idiots that just don't care about the truth. Never will :(

From the Schaap Article:

• Te'o was never asked for money during the plot, but Kekua once requested his checking account number in order to send him money. Te'o did not provide his account number.

Swarbrick's comment about looking into someone trying to create an NCAA violation makes a little more sense.

This.

I overheard someone in my office saying it was a Heisman ploy. My response, "Really? Lennay 'died' BEFORE WEEK 3? I'm pretty sure Barkley was still in the hunt then and Manziel hadn't even been mentioned.". If it was week 8 or later, at least it'd would have been more believable as some kind of ND ruse."

And furthermore, did anyone actually see NDs HeIsManti campaign? It looked like my HS A/V club edited it (back in '99).
I don't think they could pull it off.

It's time to put this all behind us. Manti was the victim. He was NOT involved.
I feel terrible for Manti that he had to go through all of this. He is a great kid and has never been anything but an outstanding representative of Notre Dame. His play and, more importantly, his character have made him an ND legend and one of my favorite players to ever don the blue and gold. I will be wearing my Manti jersey proudly today and for years to come.
