i'm not a law major nor do i have any clue on how to interpret it, but is it possible that manti could sue the initial "news" outlet that broke the story for defamation since they said they were "80%" certain he was involved in the hoax

No. For a variety of reasons.

I think it was smart Teo did not do the interview on camera. I also think it would be smart for Teo to not sue anybody.

And there was this section of the Te’o interview:

SI: What did she study?

TE’O: She graduated in 2011 or 2010. 2011.

SI: What was her major?

TE’O: Her major was in English and something. I’ll double check.

SI: I can call Stanford and check. They have to have some record or note that she passed.

Also for clarity.

I don't believe so. They didn't say they were 80% certain, they merely quoted someone involved in the case as saying they were 80% certain. Huge difference.

Um....have you read this thread? Where is there anything anybody said that isn't at least somewhat speculative? I would have thought that went without saying. Am I supposed to be like one of these mouth breathers that writes "no info" after every one of my sentences? Sometimes you have to expect your audience to do some thinking on their own.

I'm just saying that assuming Manti did this all for attention is a little bit much. For all you know he may have "lied" about it because he was embarassed he had an online girlfriend. The guy is a super star D1 athlete and he has an online girlfriend? There are a million reasons why he might have "lied" about how he met her.

I'm saying it's speculative to say he wanted attention and that was the reason for him "perpetuating or embellishing" this relationship.

Manti could very well have lied about lots of stuff. He may have made the whole thing up. He may be spilling his guts right now explaining that he was the perpetrator and he did it for Heisman votes but that would all be speculative. So if you dislike that other people are doing it why would you do it?

Wasn't that story given by his father though?

For your reference:

The story doesn't quote Te'o. But the paper released a statement last night saying the details for their reporting on Kekua "were given to us by Te’o, members of his family and his coaches at Notre Dame."

It is my opinion as a jurist. If you came into my office asking me to pursue an action against deadspin or another media outlet, I would tell you not to waste your money. The biggest reason is that he is a public figure, but there are numerous other reasons that relate to all of the elements of the tort. If you want me to elaborate, I'll need a retainer.

If you wanted to go after the kid? I'd do that on contingency because even if he's judgment proof I'd enjoy ruining his life a little.

section (a) says impersonating an "actual" person. Might be a loophole for this Ronaiah guy.

I think the girl whose pictures Ronaiah stole should sue. She was innocently dragged into this entire mess and had no involvement whatsoever.

To be fair, Whiskey, what details could have came from his family or the university that didn't initially come from Manti?

True, but there's a huge distinction (to me at least) between fibbing to one's parents to conceal the origins of a purely online relationship and lying to a reporter directly. The former is a harmless white lie; the latter involves deceiving possibly millions of people.

I love that you have forever linked the Dalek and vFraud on IE.

Again, that isn't dispositive of anything. Which details were attributable to Te'o, which to his family, and which to ND?

Regardless of where the initial story mined these nuggets, the story was told from Teo to said family members. How and why would family members, people who weren't at the game, make up intimate details about a chance meeting on the football field?

See above for why it matters whether Te'o told a few white lies to his parents or directly to a reporter.

In Swarbrick's press conference I thought he left plenty of room for Manti to step up to the plate on some of his actions. To me he clearly felt like Manti has some atonement to do.

I'm happy that Teo is being represented and the dude was at the table with him. Hopefully, they have prepared to pick right up where Swarbrick left it. I'm feeling better about not doing it live. We'll see after this B-Ball game wraps up.The haters will hear what they want to hear...I guess I'll probably hear what I want to hear as well.

We're arguing about how it's different to fib to your parents than to purposely lie to the media/nation.
