I don't see it unlikely that they met on one occasion and carried on the relationship from there through social networking. The person continued to lie about her name and got other friends in on it.

This, combined with the fact that Manti initially said it was a "close relationship" has formed the perfect storm. It really could be a series of misunderstandings + the hoax.

Rhode Irish, I was butthurt when I said Deadspin = Bleacher Report, just so you know.

But why would he have to be in on it in that scenario? Maybe one of the people in on the hoax actually was a women that met Manti and even went on vacations with him. the hoax does not have to be purely over the phone/internet. There could have been a real live "Lennay".

But she wouldn't have looked like her photos. The photos of the Twitter Lennay came from a friend of the Tuiasasopo kid, without her knowledge.

Wow. Let the kid have a chance to explain. ND is willing to stick its neck out after having investigated it, to say that it appears to be a hoax. Are people really throwing Manti Te'o under the bus this fast?
That depends. If ND knew on the 26th of Dec, they didn't think it was a good idea for the school to mention that it wouldn't be a good idea for the team to bring it up during the NC game?

As an outsider looking in, it seems like it was a planned publicity stunt by the Te'o family to get more votes for the postseason awards.

Te'o in that Rome interview: "I can't describe her. She was my best friend whom I fell in love with."

Not to mention Declan Sullivan and Lizzy Seeberg getting brought up again.

1. I will be more shocked than almost anything in my life if T'eo made this whole thing up out of whole cloth. At worst, he got duped and laid down some lies around the dupe to avoid embarrassment to himself, his family, his team and school. Bad judgment, if true, but people make such mistakes all the time.

2. Almost as surprising is anyone being surprised that the media never investigated. As a group, the media is pretty lazy. It's an advocacy media these days, not an investigative media. That died when Woodward and Bernstein got old and tired.

They invented a girlfriend three years ago and had her die at the beginning of the season as all part of a master plan to get Manti more awards?

Then why was someone not related to the family at all doing all the work?

I dont understand the publicity stunt to get postseason award votes. He wasnt a Heisman candidate the week of the MSU or Michigan game, not even close...

How was it a stunt for awards? It supposedly happened in the first half of the season.

I have no idea why anyone would make up this type of story...there's a lot of information missing to come to a conclusion.

If Manti speaks on it maybe we will here the real truth.

Do you? Is there video anywhere? If so, then it's harder and harder to believe he wasn't "in" on it. But what the hell would be the motivation for something like this?

I'm trying hard to remember when but I remember a reporter asking him about her and he said that they spent time in Hawaii over the summer. I could be wrong. I'll retract my "definitely remember" statement

You're right. I've considered the options, and that seems most plausible. Family wants post-season awards. Concludes that a dead grandmother is not enough, should fake the death of a GF too. That way, if the team wins 8 or 9 more games, and their are not enough great offensive performances, you can be the first defendser in the Heisman converstation in 20 years.... right.

Since that is the most likely story I will smear his name until I hear otherwise...

Brace yourselves and get ready for a media (not just espn!) FEEDING FRENZY here folks.
there is ND blood in the water.

This will not end well.

not for Teo.

and what is even worse:

certainly not for ND.

#NIGHTMARE
Step back take a deep breath and let this run its course. I find it hard to believe Manti Teo is a conspirator. If he is then we will adjust, and if he is not there will much embarrasment and well deserved consequences for those who have already slandered this young man. I believe in this kid until shown with no doubt that he is not innocent. As far as the feeding frenzy let that be a glowing example of what is wrong with this world. The most important question to ask about all this is who are we really and what have we become? I pray to God that Manti Teo will not be slandered.

They invented a girlfriend 3 years prior in the off chance that he would both:
A) Come back for a senior season
B) Play so well he'd be up for awards
C) Need a "publicity bump"... so they would kill a fake person and expect everyone to take it at face value

As implausible as someone getting duped is... what I just described above is 1000x less plausible.

My friends have a saying that I feel is appropriate to use in these circumstances....

"I'm willing to bet my d*ck that Manti isn't the conspirator in this whole story..."

But if I'm wrong, every great thing I had to say about the kid will be taken back and I won't respect him...

I'm signing off for the night... let me just say Occam's razor clearly trends towards Manti getting duped.
