Still say USC as a national title contender was the bigger hoax.

Look at all the stories about how he met her and did all those other things... how can you twist it that he's the victim.

I haven't felt this bad in a long long time.

My mind is blown. I can't believe they've known for 3 weeks and din't say anything!

How can the university actually say anything? It's INCREDIBLY embarrassing and should be handled by Manti personally.

you serious, clark?

They knew about this on December 26th and we are just hearing about it now, in this way. Terrible, terrible PR at best.

I don't understand what duty of reporting college relationships to the public they have? I'm sure they were acting in the best interest of Te'o.

Anyone who thinks the University hasn't tried to help Te'o in this probably still thinks BK is a traitor.

Were they? My bad.

Yeah, unless ND or Te'o continued to entertain the hoax after the 26th for some sort of tangible gain, I don't see how either can be painted as a bad guy here. I'm assuming they hoped it would just get passed over to save Te'o some embarrassment. Nothing nefarious in that.

Really hope Manti was not involved, if so he better swear up and down that he wasn't.

And I thought Gilmore making up the story that his girlfriend fell off a cliff and died on impact was messed up

Humor.

Not the time for jokes, but if this was a hoax hatched by MT and ND (which I highly doubt), wouldn't a huge billboard in Times Square have been a better approach???

I hate listening to Gottlieb talk about this. Such a hater, all because he was an idiot while he was there.

I feel bad for Manti. Ugh

Did he ever claim to have met her? I don't remember that. The daily phone calls could certainly have been part of the hoax.

Epic troll job.

One of the many questions I have here, what is the punishment for the people who hoaxed him? Could this have broken any laws?

My God.

This could explain why he played like crap during the game. His brain was in pieces after finding out that he had been duped.

So is this best possible scenario:

A) ND statement is completely true
B) any stories of them meeting/talking was a cover up because of what? embarrassment?

In which case ND and Manti are at some fault but not that bad?

Has the Dennis Brown press release made it here yet? It appears the story is legit.

Supposedly Lennay's (fake) Twitter account just tweeted at Manti:

"I miss you too snugglebunny"

Was ND supposed to hold a press conference and announce that a player got duped and played by a fake person on an AIM screen name?

Gotta feel bad for Manti (even though it was supposed to be the "love of his life"). If somehow Manti knew about it pre-awards circuit and hyped it up himself, then shame on him.

My God.

Not really. There are really new "cyber-bullying" laws that might work, but really since no $ changed hands there isn't really a winning lawsuit here.

Well, could do intentional infliction of emotional distress maybe.

Probably that the thing blew up, from a friend to a girlfriend?

I can very well buy Te'o being duped.

Why would stories be made up about how they met? Because who wants to say, no, I haven't met this girl before who I'm in a serious relationship with.

And with Te'o being Mormon, I can buy him being in a relationship purely platonic.

And I can definitely buy somebody going so far as to kill off the fictitious character they've made to hide their tracks.

Welcome to the dark side of the internet.

There are a lot of people saying a Hansen article quote's Te'o as saying:

1. They met at the Stanford game in '09
2. They vacationed together
3. Brian Te'o talked with her on the phone

I'll have to try and find the article to verify, but that is what is being said.

From the University:
Notre Dame Statement: Manti Te’o

On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

WOW.....I'm kinda laughing in a sad crazy way.

This is weird.

But it's not out of the relm to "build" a relationship over the phone without meeting someone. Kinda creepy, but possible.

But they knew on the 26th and didn't say anything....Very bad form guys.
