This kid seems to be a "if we miss on others" guy. Defections on NSD is the only way I seem him in the fold.

247 likes him: 4:s:, 92 rating, 6th TE; and ESPN's ratings are similar. But Rivals and Scout both have him as a 3:s:

The latter two seem to be outliers in light of his offer list: Texas, Florida and... Standford? Shaw knows TE talent when he sees it.

This kid would be a nice late addition if some other options fall through.

Miami offer doesn't hurt either.

Visited Stanford this past weekend and will visit Oregon and Michigan in the next two weeks. Will decide between Nebraska and ND for last official. Stanford is still presumed to be the likely landing spot.

Stanford stockpiles TE's like LSU stockpiles quick, undersized DE's.

And like Alabama stockpiles mutants.

Interesting. The staff is making a legit push for him and Chirstian feels ND will get an official visit from him.

Christian on ISD thinks we are going to push hard, and if we do, we have a strong chance to pull him.

We are definitely in it till the end now.

I wonder if we would have gone after this kid this hard if Heuerman wasn't an EE?

Shocking. What does this say about other prospects and Smythe himself?

He seems to be the prototypical "Big Skill" guy the staff loves to stockpile. I say get him in the fold, and figure out where the 6'6, 240+ guys with athleticism and ball skills fits best later.

We already told Heuerman we might look at a second TE. As usual with Heuerman zero shts were given.

Definitely makes you wonder, but I think Mike is a true TE, whereas Durham could play a couple different positions. We'll see though.

Lol yeah. We could bring back Kyle Rudolph and convince Tyler to stay and Mike would still think he's winning the job. Love his attitude.

Huh. Only two ways I can make sense of this:
1) The staff has changed its view that Smythe is a "TE only" prospect rather than a flexible Mattingly-like "big skill" prospect. We have a spot for another "big skill" guy, and maybe the staff now thinks Smythe can fill it. I know the story on him previously was that he was purely a TE and that's why we weren't interested.
and/or
2) Smythe is a great profile fit as a student athlete. Quoted by 247 today as saying that he loves ND because it is a top university AND a top football program (also explains his Stanford interest). Maybe the staff figures we might be able to use another TE in this class after all and Smythe is a great one to take a chance on because you know he will be a "program kid" who works hard and stays out of academic trouble.

Do we think this means the staff doesn't feel great about other prospects on the board? Or does timing of visit in Feb make it completely irrelevant? I'd vote with him visiting after the 25th and deciding on NSD it's pretty independent but what do you guys think?

Ahh nice. That explains it. I've always kind of thought we could use another TE in this class.

with his size at the very least if for whatever reason the depth at TE gets too much he could grown into a tackle. body type reminds me of matuska

I think they have just decided that we have 2-3 spots left so let's recruit 6-7 guys to make sure we fill those spots.
