"are" or "are not"?
Is he under the impression that people will think he is Clay Matthews and that they will care about his opinion? Or is he just looking for the quickest way out of town should BK get the job?

He is just a player who knows Kelly would be a total failure in the NFL. He is a college coach and he always will be. The NFL would eat him alive.
Casey Matthews wouldn't start at Notre Dame right now. ****ing worst starting NFL middle LB I have ever seen.
I would have to say that all the good feelings between Jack and Bri are now flushed. All business now. Cordial in public, extreme distaste in private.
I would have to say no, probably not. This is not how this stuff works. If they get a new deal done,* all will be right with the world. They're both professionals and know the business they're in. Its not like they were childhood best friends.
*I will say, though, that I think Trace Armstrong may have overplayed his hand and in the process given Kelly some poor guidance. This interview was way too transparent of a leverage play to have the intended effect, and therefore is unlikely to get Kelly much better of a raise than he would have gotten otherwise. And in exchange for that, Kelly has certainly undermined his reputation with at least some Irish supporters. Worse, I still think there is a chance that Jack doesn't buy that Kelly could or would go to the Eagles and calls his bluff. If Kelly wants this bad enough that he would go through all of this in order to get it, he might not take that real well, and this thing could blow up.
Like I said before, I think these guys are pros and will get a deal done, even if the waters get a little muddy in the process. But my main fear is that this stunt blows up and makes a deal less, rather than more, likely. I fear that much more than I do him actually going to the Eagles.
I haven't been as offended by the idea of Kelly trying this move from a moral or ethical standpoint as a lot of other posters here, but I do think from a business standpoint it wasn't the most brilliantly executed maneuver and even seems a little hairbrained. That is what has me nervous.
What are you basing this on? It's not like a college coach never did well in the NFL.
Any college coach that has had success in the NFL has at least had some NFL experience before becoming a head coach in the NFL. One really good season at ND does not mean he's NFL material. He is a college coach and nothing more.

ESPN's John Clayton just said he picked up on Brian Kelly's NFL interest "2 weeks ago." Can't make ND feel any better. Surprised to hear it."

meh. so clayton--then why not report it when you "heard" it.

Philadelphia Eagles interview Lovie Smith, former chicago Bears coach, as search continues - ESPN
"The Eagles interviewed Notre Dame's Brian Kelly on Tuesday, a day after the Fighting Irish lost 42-14 to Alabama in the Discover BCS National Championship game. Penn State's Bill O'Brien and Oregon's Chip Kelly interviewed with Philadelphia last week, but chose to stay at their schools."
yawn
Exactly. I'd say as a general rule you can believe about one out of every five "reports" coming out of ESPN about this stuff (coaching changes, trades, free agency, etc.). The trouble is, its hard to identify which one out of any set of five "reports" isn't a crock of ****.
Yeah, but Clayton was saying this on or around January 1st. Angelo Di Carlo tweeted it on Jan 1st.
If Swarbrick isn't in on this, then BK has to be aware that ND can just tell him to take a leap. And I don't see the Eagles job as an automatic for him anyway. It's just weird because Swarbrick has had Kelly's back for 3 years. "Coldest seat in the country..." etc. So it's a bizarre way for him to negotiate now, unless he got offered something already and it was low. But we would have probably heard about that by now.
When did you become the voice of the Irish and specifically, Kelly. You lecturing people on how they should react to this situation has become old and stagnant.
You've put together some, 60-something posts since joining the site....most of which have come in this thread. I'm glad that you're able to speak your mind, but to bend long time posters over a barrel for having an opinion is not moving in the right direction. This is, after all, a message board. We can all have opinions on things....Quite frankly, I haven't agreed with a single post you've had yet, but, it is what it is....a message board.
You can have your opinion....It's your right, as it is ours to have one as well.
That said, enjoy your stay.

Yup.. This thing is real. And, that said, I wouldn't put it past Swarbrick to tell him to do that exact thing. Kelly has a hand to play and so does the University of Notre Dame. Kelly thinks he has them bent over a barrel here. Not so fast my friend... ND could tell him to go pound salt and that'll be the end of this era. Play with fire, get burned. Just saying.
Here's the problem no one is talking about. Regardless of whether he stays or not, I think it's becoming obvious that BK has some intermediate to serious level of interest in the NFL. He may prefer ND at this point but it seems to me that he has the desire to be an NFL coach someday.
If we have another good season, this nonsense is going to happen again next year and the year after that. This vibe I'm getting from BK is just not positive.
Having lived in Northern Cali for several years now I can assure you positive vibes are overrated.
