These bragging rights mean so much more when we are also ranked #1 on the field.

Why is this "a message from the students"?

I don't know how to respond to that? What do you mean why? It's a commercial for the NCG representing that the Notre Dame football team is number one, and the Notre Dame student-athlete graduation rate is also number one in the country. Those are students in the commercial representing Notre Dame which will then be shown to the entire country tuning into the game....

I just don't get what the commercial is saying or who it's directed toward. Is it directed at recruits? The students literally have zero to do with the athletic department or the student-athlete graduation rate. They could literally repackage this commercial without a reference to students and nothing would change, hence the question.

As a double domer I'd rather them just do another fighting commercial or reference that we're #1 in a whole host of other things, or even just say that we're a community and not just "the student body" and "the athletes".

It's to tell everyone that ND cares about the student as a person and not just as an athlete.

It also tells all of those ND haters in the media that, yes we can do it with strict academics that you said held us back, along with the weather.

You could also say it represents a unity between the athletes and the students, something that most schools do not have.

Why is this "a message from the students"?

Filmed starring exclusively students. They sent out an email asking for people to go to the stadium to film this commercial. I passed because the day was an absolute s*** show, pouring rain and miserable.

Email they sent out
Notre Dame students -
Want to be a part of the most watched cable broadcast in history? That’s right – over 30 million viewers. The University is producing its 30-second institutional message to air during the BCS National Championship Game.
And it will feature you.
Professional crews, along with staff from the University Communications department, will be videotaping this Friday, December 7. The spot calls for multiple shots of students congregating at Notre Dame Stadium.
We’re asking students to arrive at the Rockne Gate of the stadium at 4:00 p.m. on Friday (December 7). This is the gate with the entrance to the tunnel that’s directly across from the library. The first 600 students will be allowed in the stadium, where they will play a crucial role in communicating the message of the spot. We anticipate the videotaping to be complete by 5:30 p.m.
While only 600 will be a part of the filming inside the stadium, the remaining students who arrive may be featured in exterior shots outside the stadium.
This is your chance to show your enthusiasm for your university and the #1 football team in the land! It's time to tell the world, "Here come the Irish!"

Holy smokes, I watched it 3 times and got goosebumps all 3 times, also brought tears to my eyes.

Are you kidding you don't understand what the commercial is directed at?

#1: WE ARE AND ALWAYS WILL BE ND, A FAMILY
#2: The 20+ years didn't break ND they only made them stronger and more determined
#3: ND fans across the country, from students to the armchair QB, are behind all of the student athletes at ND
#4: And WE ARE #1 baby.........................

I just don't get what the commercial is saying or who it's directed toward.

I though it was pretty clear. I think this is the message:

"A message from the students"... (shows the students gathering to give the message)... we're proud of our #1 football team... not just because they are #1 on the field, but also... for being such great students (#1 in graduation rate) ... and such great friends and family (#1 in our hearts).

The message is for everyone associated with Notre Dame who takes pride in being part of the ND family. It is also a message to outsiders that the Notre Dame family cares about their football team, not just as football players, but as fellow students and friends.

We're all very proud.

I don't get how a double domer doesn't get this commercial? The symbolism of this is off the charts ESPECIALLY with Alabama offering a perfect ying to our yang. With the entire SEC watching we can say, proudly, that we have always been #1 where it counts and excel this year in a way few others can ever dream.

ND graduates everyone, not just student athletes. If you get in, they will do their best to get you through, not from lowering the bar but by pushing you over it. Go to any state school orientation, first thing they say is "look to your left, look to your right, only one of you will graduate from here" representing most people drop out. By that standard, most program graduation rates are pretty "good." You fend for yourself/survival of the fittest.

At ND, they care for all, not just the athletically gifted. Counselors, profs, tutors, rectors, etc, there is a substantial support staff to help guide you and keep you on a path to graduation.

Not to burst any bubbles, play smart-*** or demean (in any way shape or form) the efforts of the university in assisting its students, those are the exact words used at my freshman orientation to ND in 1970. The guy to my left became a good friend – to this day – and we laughed our asses off at graduation because we "beat the odds." For all I know the guy to my right also graduated, though he may well have transferred, dropped out or flunked out. I don't know.

I'm not a double domer, just a domer. I "get" the intent of the spot. My hope is that it is one part in a series to be aired in the course of the game.

I never heard those words. In fact, I only know of 3 of my friends who have dropped out or transferred.

Just saying

They had lower standards for admittance back then and it was an uphill walk to class both ways in two feet of snow.
