From Eric Hanson chat:

Tom Lemming has seen the kids play and thinks he is the best player in this class AND is good enough to start next year. I need to see that myself, but I can't imagine he won't be in the rotation no matter who else is in it. Tom compared him to Julius Jones.

I'll take that comparison! Hopefully he is utilized even more than Jones was (although Grant was here at that time too).

Pass Pro will be the hurdle for Bryant imo. If he can pick that up there is no reason he can't get on the field.

Pass Pro is tough for any freshman but it may be a risk reward thing with this.

I know this has probably already been said in the thread but is he an EE?

247: Best Looking Football Prospects "On the Hoof"

RB- Greg Bryant, Delray Beach (Fla.) American Heritage -- From head to toe, the Notre Dame commit is solidly built. He looks college ready -- ready to take a beating and dish out a beating.

DB- Max Redfield, Mission Viejo (Calif.) -- Redfield looks exactly how a safety should. The 6-feet-3, 195-pounder has the ideal frame with excellent length.

I haven't seen Carlisle play or Mahone, and I see Atkinson as more of a kick returner and change of pace/homerun back and i think Cam will play other positions. Considering these things I could see Bryant possibly being our primary back next year. I doubt it, but i think it COULD happen.

One of the reasons Cierre is ripping pine out of his own arse is because he didn't run downhill on most plays. He preferred to dance around and make his own way while being swallowed up by the defense. Also, I think he goes down on first contact to easily. Has to lower his pad level a bit, absorb the blow and move forward.

See a lot of Cierre in this kid. Hope Kelly can break that mentality. He could be something special with his body type.

Cierre Wood, the guy who averaged 6.7 ypc and only had 4 less carries per game than the starter, is riding the bench. Yeah right. Cierre is going to be getting significant playing time on Sunday because he has great vision for a runner and has elite breakaway speed & smarts. We'd be lucky to have another Cierre.

There are plenty of Cierre's, and with the way Kelly recruits guys into his system, there will be many more in the future.

Because in every high school class there are about fifty to one hundred running backs that could match his development if the conditions were right. The advantages the bigger colleges have is they attract them. The advantages Notre Dame has now is they find every last one and once they get them, they develop them mentally and physically. (Or the player leaves)

HCTI brought up a good point. Were you all that impressed by the short snippet of tape? Because if you were, you don't get what Kelly has done here at ND, at all. Forget about Riddick. The back you want to talk about is Theo. Theo was complained about as an under-performed for the last three years. Why? This year when he moved back to more of a natural running back position, he with all of the fancy moves, started running North and South. The results were devastating. Ask every team on the schedule including the biggest two. At the end you could see OK and SC defenders on the ground not wanting to get up. IF Bryant learns to run North and South with a lower pad level, he could be a better weapon than a Stuie's death ray. If not it is just back to the Weis, Clausen, Allen cult of the personality, if the offensive line had just laid one more block and he had made one more juke . . .

Agree 100%. Love this kid's potential, but this was the first film of his I had watched and I was surprised by the running style I saw. With his physical attributes, I expected a downhill style. Fully believe he'll get to that point once in ND's system a while.

Repeating myself: Kelly wants a rip downhill runner with pass-catcher's hands. And courage and brains to suss out the blitz and block it. Cierre was better [marginally] than Theo on the blocking stuff, but Theo was far better on the downhill and catching stuff. Thus, Theo in game more than Cierre.

Kelly's offense VITALLY needs the RB to be able to run routes and catch the ball --- pros wouldn't mind that either. If Greg can match those criteria and not fumble, Kelly will have him playing quickly.

I agree. That's usually the problem with freshmen backs. Their speed and quickness has allowed them to get outside and beat the opponent. Some have a hard time breaking that mentality some adapt quickly.

Bryant has plenty of North/South runs where he runs over people for 5 yards gains on almost every carry. Unfortunately those kinds of carries don't make the highlight reels.

I often wish that we could see more complete film on these guys. What they do without the ball, some tougher runs, blocking, route running, etc. I love what I've seen of Bryant. I wonder about the uprigt style of running and the way he holds the ball. I'm sure the staff has seen all of the film and is OK with it.
