Because in every high school class there are about fifty to one hundred running backs that could match his development if the conditions were right. The advantages the bigger colleges have is they attract them. The advantages Notre Dame has now is they find every last one and once they get them, they develop them mentally and physically. (Or the player leaves)
HCTI brought up a good point. Were you all that impressed by the short snippet of tape? Because if you were, you don't get what Kelly has done here at ND, at all. Forget about
Riddick. The back you want to talk about is
Theo. Theo was complained about as an under-performed for the last three years. Why? This year when he moved back to more of a natural running back position, he with all of the fancy moves, started running North and South. The results were devastating. Ask every team on the schedule including the biggest two. At the end you could see OK and SC defenders on the ground not wanting to get up. IF Bryant learns to run North and South with a lower pad level, he could be a better weapon than a Stuie's death ray. If not it is just back to the Weis, Clausen, Allen cult of the personality, if the offensive line had just laid one more block and he had made one more juke . . .
