This is to be expected. You have a top unit, schools will come calling. I say good for him. Timing isn't great, but hopefully it will never be great.

Cal > BC

All day, everyday

Yes, as far as talent, I would go with Cal. But dang man, they are both major level teams.

BC is NOT a major program. They are a stepping stone program. Not a place you stay at forever.

BC is a stepping stone to a "Major" program (Oklahoma, tOSU, UM, Alabama, LSU). Haha - I refuse to bow to your all knowing greatness.

Besides, in the BCS presser, Kelly did not seemed concerned with him stating something to the effect of Diaco knows where he fits in at ND. I'm not worried-this year.

All knowing? All I am saying is that in college football there are schools that people leave from to go to bigger schools and BC is one of those schools like a Maryland, Arizona, West Virginia, etc.. How many coaches that weren't fired, left BC to go to a bigger school?

First, I'm sure an agent would tell Diaco that he needs to go through the interview process even if he doesn't want to leave for two reasons:
1. He will gain additional exposure to the masses as his name gets repeated for various coaching vacancies. This can only help 2 to 3 years down the road when head coaching positions become available at more prestigious schools.
2. It will be good for him to go through the interviewing process so he knows what to expect and is better prepared to interview for a top coaching position down the road.

I have no clue as to how "hot" the coaching seat is in Iowa, but I'm guessing that Diaco knows their could be a vacancy at Iowa in the near future if Ferentz can't do better next year then 4-8 in a bad Big Ten losing their last 6 games.

So with that definition, how many schools are considered major then in your mind? 5-10-15?

I would not characterize BC with Maryland though. How about BC being higher than WF and lower than aTm?

and in honor of Mr. Sweetness, one of the best - if not the best:

He should hold out for the HC position at Alabama. I hear they're gonna be taking a down turn pretty soon.

Exactly.

Tom O'brien had a great deal of success there (compared to BC history), leading them them to a bowl game each year starting 1999 lasting until he used that stepping stone after 2006 to go to mighty NC State.

Coughlin came down from the NFL and did use that job as a way to get a HC gig in the NFL. Jeff Jags tried to do the same thing and failed in an epic fashion.

If I were Bobby D, I would look at two very important things. One, like others have mentioned, Iowa could be looking for a coach soon. Two, historically the best ND coaches last about 10-12 years. Bobby D is very young still and if he continues to have the success he is having, he would be a prime target to replace Kelly when the time comes.

BC is a major program. He really could not ask for a better gig than that.
I disagree. Florida is a major program and that's Muschamp's first HC gig. Cal is a better job than BC as well. BC is a weak team in a weak conference. If Diaco waits a few years he could land a big time gig right away just like Muschamp.

If Diaco does except a job elsewhere who would take his spot as defensive coordinator for NC & what candidates are there to possibly bring in?

Bob Diaco is 60 minutes away from having a National Championship as a Coordinator. I highly doubt that he is going to pi$$ that away, just to become the Head Coach of a dumpster fire before Christmas. I'm sure he is telling everyone that he is not available until after the NCG.

How long did Muschamp wait?

2002 as a DC until he got that gig in 2010. Proving himself the entire time.

He should wait for next year to go elsewhere. His stock will really go up if ND wins the natty title. And I'm sure a better opening will come up too.

Get used to it gentlemen. Like recruits wanting to play for you, this is another price you pay for success.

If he waits he also risks a down year. There's something to be said about going out on top. If he accepts now and coaches the bowl game, he either goes out as a top DC with a NC or a great DC that just got outmatched in a NC by a NFL farm team. You stay, there is always the chance you regress. Raw probability says this year is probably better than next.

Something about BK's tone about this calms me.

I couldn't agree more. He really doesn't seem worried at all. His attitude is, Bob's a great fit here and he knows that, but if he wants to be a head coach, good for him and God bless.

I guess that's the only way to look at it. I hope Bobby D stays, but if he leaves, Cooks has three years experience as co-DC with Diaco. I'll hope and assume that he'll be ready to take the reins of the D, with support from Elliot (especially in the booth, as he has supported Diaco this year), and we will hire a hungry, talented young LB coach.

It is what it is. Are there any other candidates for the BC job? We were warned about this months ago (was the poster on here or ISD?) that BC was going to come after our guy.

There's still a very solid chance he stays, but also a solid chance he goes. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see. You have to really hope he would stay put until the NCG is over.

I picked up on this as well. I got the sense that they are in it for the long haul together. I could be wrong, and maybe that is just what I want to hear, but there was a sense in his tone that feels as though they both know how good they work together. I hope that I am right.

Right. BC is probably as good a job as he can hope to get right now. Maybe Purdue, though he doesn't appear to be in the hunt there. Cal seems like a stretch.

Remember, much as we love him, the guy's only got three years of major-program coordinator experience, and nothing on the offensive side of the ball. He also doesn't exactly seem comfortable with all the program-frontman public stuff that comes with being a head coach. A charismatic head coach can be especially important in a pro town like Boston, where fan interest is far from a given. Someone's got to sell the program.

But give him a year or two more to mature to get comfortable with other aspects of the program, and in that time frame you could see jobs open up like Iowa, Minnesota, maybe Mizzou or Maryland. Georgia Tech. Maybe even Nebraska when Pelini eventually bolts. All those seem like they've got more potential than BC. Maybe even a truly big-time job if things fall right (though it's worth noting re: the Muschamp example, that he was essentially being groomed for the head job in Texas. Diaco's not quite at that level).

And for what it's worth, while I'm sure Bobby D would appreciate a raise, I doubt this is the kind of decision where money is the deciding factor. At least I hope not.

Bobby D is about to get a raise....at ND. He will get a head coaching job in a few years but i dont think he takes a job at Boston College or Cal.

Even if he goes, I do not see a scenario that he doesn't coach the NCG. The men on the team love Coach D and Coach D loves the men. Not coaching would go against everything we have been told that Coach D stands for.

Yeah I think he would stay no matter what. I just fear if he left it could become a distraction for the team.
