I asked Chris Huston (aka Heisman Pundit) to respond to Sean Stires' ISD article on Te'o v. Manziel according to Huston's own "10 Heismandments". You can read it here. Not encouraging, but the early straw polls are bearing it out.

I agree with that PND. I actually like Manziel and was loving it while he trashed Bama at home. But now I lump some Aggie fans in with the rest of the SEC dilusionals. I have a high school buddy who was a grad assistant therevmany moons ago. He reminded me awhile back that the Aggies last meeting with the Irish didnt fare well for the Irish. Late 90s I think they hammered the Irish.
I like Johnny Football. He's exciting to watch and I thoroughly enjoyed watching him and the Aggies take down Alabama. That game, besides maybe Oregon/Stanford was perhaps my favorite non-ND game of the year.

However I do not think he should get the award this year. He's put up some nice stats and made a nice highlight reel for himself...but, outside of Alabama all his big numbers have come against bad competition and he shrunk from the moment against LSU and Florida. This kid will be a force the next two years in college football, maybe three, but he played himself out of the Heisman with two poor games.

Also Manti Te'o just straight up deserves it more than Manziel. He embodies what the Heisman should stand for, what it proclaims it stands for. He's the heart and soul of the #1 team in the nation. He's a courageous leader for our team and while he does have very good stats he's so much more than his stat line. He's very much like Tebow in that regard. He has intangibles that can't be measured or quantified.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGHHH! That's what is going to happen. Teo had a fantastic season, but there's not going to be another Heisman on the defensive side for a long time.

The thing is if Manziel had dominated tough opponents I'd be all for him winning.

I just can't stomach the 1-2 with 234 YPG - 2 TDs - 3 INTs against top competition. It's just too awful. He doesn't deserve it based on beating up bad teams.

espn has chosen johnny football-silly stuff when you think about it-the kid has played one season. Of course it was a great season but there is no way in %$#@ that this kid is a winner over Manti Teo. I think johnny football will win because well-Desmond Howard says so. Its all a joke and I wouldnt even watch except that Teo will be there to honor Notre Dame. When did this award go so wrong- its like a carricature of itself now itstead of the prestigious award it used to be.

I think we should all wrap our mind around the fact that they are not voting for a pure defensive player...

Some 'arguments' I ran into tonight:

"I'm tired of everyone pretending like Te'o is some kind of saint or something and not just a football player who doesn't act out."

In response to a claim that Te'o has been the driving force of the turnaround of Notre Dame football:

"Also, the driving force for the turnaround? As in he recruited the players on the rest of the team, he made coaching decisions, and he raises money for the program? The ****?"

"Notre Dame hasn't played a very good quarterback all year, leading to Te'o's 7 picks. And if you consider a high of 12 tackles and an average of 8.4 tackles heisman worthy, than the Heisman race is really that bad this year."

"Te'O isn't even the best LB in college. Mauti and that guy from Georgia are better or just as good."

"Teo shouldn't win the Heisman when he isn't even the best linebacker in college football."

Damn near same username. Lol.

One of his comments: so now you have to have a family tragedy to be a Heisman hopeful? Garbage.

Okay, you guys are idiots. e king gill is the original player who came in as the 12th man from our stands. That is why the name is popular, and no, I am not the same person. It'd be similar to something stupid like... the name ND_Rock.

Eddie George and Pat Forde discuss Heisman. Eddie doesn't put all his cards on the table, but he does point out that Manziel didn't have good games against top competition and racked up stats against inferior defenses. My guess is Eddie is voting for Manti.

We are idiots for not knowing an obscure part of the prestigious history of A&M football??? 95% of the people outside of the A&M fan base don't know that because no one outside of the A&M fan base gives two shits about A&M.

Hey I knew who Gill was. If you want to use an example of a ND monicker that is close to Gill's story, use some form of Rudy.

Although I honestly like the Gill story and tradition. I cringe at the liberties taken in the movie Rudy.

Season a 'dream come true' for Texas A&M Aggies Johnny Manziel - ESPN

He also, for the first time, addressed his offseason arrest. In June he was charged with a trio of misdemeanors -- disorderly conduct, failure to identity and possessing a false identification card -- after being involved in a fight in the Northgate bar district.

"It was something that was a critical mistake in my life and something that I had to learn a lot from," he said. "It's something that had its consequences with Coach Sumlin, with my teammates and with everybody here in Aggieland. It was just a critical mistake on my part, and from that I've had to try to make changes in my life that revolve around that."

The kid had a fake ID and got into a bar fight while drinking under age. I wasn't above something like that when I was in college. Except the legal age was 18 when I was in college. I probably did something similar in high school. As for the racial slurs used, I think I read that he didnt do that. A friend did.

While many of us here think that his arrest should have some bearing on the voting, in reality I think it will have none. Focusing on this issue actually distracts from the most compelling point, which was his play against ranked opponents specifically his play in the Florida and LSU games where he did nothing in the second half of each game when his team needed him most. I'm starting to hear more and more analysts bringing this point up. As more people bring this point up, it may make Heisman voters take a pause and dig a little deeper rather then getting caught up in the "buzz" of Johnny Football.

Funny for me to bring this up, as I am a staunch supporter of young kids making mistakes and learning from them, however, with a mission statement that reads:

The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity.

in·teg·ri·ty (n-tgr-t)
n.
1. Steadfast adherence to a strict moral or ethical code.
2. The state of being unimpaired; soundness.
3. The quality or condition of being whole or undivided; completeness.

He's made mistakes, like I know I have, but then again, I'm not up for the Heisman either. This award is a view of the whole person concept, not just what happens on the field. As everyone on here agrees, Teo exemplifies that statement, Manziel, well-maybe in a few years time is my opinion.

From a Buckeye board:

agreed...Eddie George said he was voting for Te'o, and I tweeted him saying no way and why..

his only response...cause he is 2nd in the country in INT's

Eddie's a good man in my book...just would have been nice if we hadn't dropped both those games to him in the 90s.

I hear what you are saying and agree that if the Heisman voters were given those instructions to vote for a player that exhibits excellence with integrity, that Teo would win and it wouldn't even be close.

However, Bill King said that the Heisman voters receive no instructions whatsoever and each person is left to decide on their own what qualities are important when they decide who to vote for. I think a huge majority of Heisman voters will not take integrity into account.

Excellent point on the integrity part of the Heisman. I think Manti shoud win it. I hope he wins it. As for the JM arrest, I think too much of my glass house to throw stones.

Well, it was nice joshing with you guys. It is all in fun. I wish ND luck and Manti the best in the NFL. Forget the Heisman though. It is over. A&M will be claiming that prize.

Just prep for Alabama/Georgia so you don't get pounded and embarrassed in front of the entire country. I actually think Georgia would be more dangerous for ND.

OU was supposed to pound us as well.

And I'm looking forward to beating either one of those teams...especially UGA, who has PLAYED NO ONE.

They did play Florida and SC. Went 1-1. Just like Bama went 1-1 with LSU and A&M. You know, that brutal SEC schedule.

From Lou over at BGI:
4 Major awards won in 2011 by former Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly, featuring the Butkus Award, Bronko Nagurski Award, Lott IMPACT Trophy and Lombardi Award. This year, Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o is a finalist and probably favorite for all four — plus he also is one of three finalists for the Maxwell Award and Chuck Bednarik Award, and as of Tuesday night was the top vote getter for the Senior CLASS Award, which will be presented Dec. 3.

Oh yeah … he also could be the recipient of the Heisman "despite" playing only on defense. There might not be a greater haul of hardware in a single year by an individual college football player.
