Just watched his tunnel run out. That hurt to watch. Manly tears were shed.

Hoping Manti has his best game ever against USC, but also hoping Johnny Football has 5 INTs :). Manti should have no problem getting up for this game. Like GH90, got dust in my eyes watching senior day pre game. I'm betting he will be a F***ing beast like we've never seen before Saturday night.

Kelly: I think Manti should win the Heisman Trophy as long as we continue to win. I'll push for him, but he's not focused on it.

Defensive players won't win the Heisman IMO. It'll be Football then Te'o then Klein then Braxton then Jarvis Jones or Geno Smith. That order.

I'm not so sure. Except for Johnny Football, all the others were being talked about like world beaters then they were shut down. I think Manti just moved back in the top two. If he can have a great game against SC and we close the season undefeated I think he takes it home.

For what it's worth, i was pretty sure that Manti caused the fumble in yesterday's game. Yes, Calabrese had a big hit, but if you watch closely it was Manti's second hit which caused the ball to come out.

Let's play that up big time and if we beat USC and Manti has a "Heisman" moment then he'll have a chance. Missouri beating Johnny Football also would help.

Thought so too, and called it in the gameday thread at the time. Who did they credit with that forced fumble?

I think he will get an invite, but to win it he needs to have a spectacular game in primetime this Saturday to keep him in the minds of the voters up until they announce the winner.

Need another big interception, sack, or forced fumble along with an Irish win and I think he gets it.

It's truly more wide open this year than any in recent memory. They might have to break the mold one way or the other - go with a freshman or a pure defensive player. Odds are still against him, but he definitely has a realistic shot at it. Something a little less than spectacular might get it done.

It is a microcosm of college football this year. Kind of a down year for everyone really.
Most teflon SEC teams are headed to 2 loss seasons!

Well.

Then.

Give me back those ten minutes of my life and queue some dumbass gif.

Also Beano Cook is dead and Pat Haden no longer works for NBC Sports.

Just saying.

Personally I think that Manti DESERVES the Heisman simply for being the best player and PERSON in CFB.

There are only three candidates: Manti, Klein, and Manziel. So, the question of whether he gets an invite is rather absurd. NOT getting one would be the strangest thing that's happened in NCAA football all season. AND the national outrage would be ear-splitting. So please let's get rid of that paranoia.

Will he win? There are NO legitimate comments which give any reason that he will not win other than "It's never happened". This is an argument against Manti only if one believes that voters really don't think at all about their votes. The reason that defensive players fail to win is obvious: voters have difficulties enumerating their reasons why they SHOULD vote for them. Suh was so dominant that they almost enumerated enough to vote him in, but he was playing line for Nebraska [a very good but not a storybook defense] and not MIKE for Notre Dame [a legendary program, a storybook season, number one in the nation, and personally an image of all that's right about football and college].

Klein is real good, but a bit of damaged goods, as all the "sinking" of commentary about him now easily demonstrates. Johnny Football is real good, but he has come to this party FAR later than Manti and has none of the other "special auras" about him other than beating Alabama. Johnny Football is the intriguing young buck that we are fascinated with but don't know. Manti alone is standing in the spotlight unblemished, universally admired as a man, and established. Now... we REALLY need to beat USC, but if we do, and if Manti has a good solid game for him, all this faul-du-raul about him not being able to win becomes utter BS --- and, in my opinion, he goes to NYC the favorite --- in almost every sense the word favorite can be used.

p.s. voted for our guy.

As hard as it is for a defensive player to win it, I really think he has a shot after this past weekend. K-State and Oregon losses cleared out some competition. But I think he has to have an impact game against USC - and we win - to feel like he has a 50/50 shot at it.

If Manti has a pick 6 or a couple turnovers forced against USC I could see him winning. And/or Manziel has a bad game to close out the season against Missouri... which seems unlikely.

It was Carlo's hit that caused it, he knocked the dude out which caused him to fumble.

Press conference video today should be up very soon. From those reporters in attendence it was an awesome one.

Some tweets:
@NDatRivals
To put Manti's press conference performance in football terms, he finished with 36 tackles, 5 sacks, 3 INTs and a fumble return for a TD.

‏@dennisdoddcbs
I think I am joined by everyone on this conference call when I say, Manti Teo for Heisman. That is all.

@JamesStevenson
@dennisdoddcbs did he throw for 8 touchdowns last week too?

‏@dennisdoddcbs
@JamesStevenson No, but he plays a thing called defense. I can spell it for you if you want. All-American, best person in the world

Thanks for the update! Let us know when the video is up!

Currently leading Johnny Football: 27%-26%

Should also add Te'o is a finalist for the Bednarik (Clowney and Jarvis Jones) and Maxwell (Klein and Manziel) awards as well.

Lee could make noise if we lose. I hope we can shut him down with a backup QB at the reigns.

Manti for Heisman.

It helps Manti's case that Johnny Manziel is a freshman. Many voters will likely think "this kid had 3 more years to earn this." Putting my green Kool-aid aside (hard to do) I think Manti is legitimately the Heisman front-runner. His team is undefeated and unlike other contenders, Manti has not had a really off game (e.g. you can't put together a low-light reel of him missing big tackles or blowing pass coverage). Manti just needs one highlight making play in an Irish win over USC to seal the deal IMO.

So I was thinking about the whole "defensive players can't win" thing today, and it occurred to me that the best defensive players won't have amazing stats, by definition.

The job of a defensive player, ultimately, is to stop the other teams drives. Lets say they are successful at this at a high rate - the implication is that the opponent will have many less drives than usual, therefore, giving the defensive player less opportunity for stats. So, the LACK of amazing stats IS the amazing stat.

I agree with this. Te'o's character, body of work, story, and lack of a loss this year all militate in his favor against Manziel. The award almost always goes to the best player on the best team at the end of the regular season. Right now, there's no argument that that's Te'o.

There are, however, a lot of Heisman voters that will reflexively vote for a QB over an ILB. Voters broke away from the "best team" requirement last year when RGIII won it (and rightfully so), so hopefully they're consciously trying to jettison the old stereotypes.

If there's ever been a year to hand it to a purely defensive player, this is it.

Didn't you call me out the other day for mentioning this? :).

I apparently misread your post. You made it sound like Manziel's got the better Heisman claim, and Te'o is only in the discussion because of those factors.

If we win, Manti wins.

That's pretty much a lock at this point. There's really one hell of an Irish wave sweeping the nation right now, not many are giving us a shot in the big one, but they like the idea of us being there, and everyone seems to love Manti.

Plus, I think there will be a backlash against the 'Johnny Football' moniker seeing as he's a freshman... I know that's kind of petty, but it's a real distinction when pitted against someone like Manti.
