Obesity is Mississippi's fault?

I'll step in for them.

Buster, the original poster did not say that our nation's obesity problems are the fault of the south. They said that it is more prevalent in the South. Which, according to the info you provided, is absolutely true.

But the case can be made that the south is simply ahead of the curve and that the entire country is still going to ****.

It is also true that the south has more people on welfare and have poor public education.

Well let's look at this. Poor education = remaining poor. So education is the problem.

Who runs the education in schools? You guessed it: the government. I find it highly ironic. I'm not saying that the government can't solve this problem, but when we rip a state as poor and uneducated... who is educating them?

Mississippi is still one of, if not the fattest, least educated, and tax-wasting state in the nation. Maybe they should try to make it on their own if it's all the federal government's fault. It would be fun to watch. They could even outlaw the interracial marriage they hate so much.

I'm not here to defend Mississippi. Please elaborate on "tax-wasting," please.

Ahead of the curve in being fat? What does that have to do with the fact that they are... in fact... worse than the rest of the country? This is just spin, buster... and you know it.

Wrong. The majority of education decisions ranging from how much tax revenue is used and how the schools will be ran come from the state, not the federal government. So the same local government that is failing the south both socially and economically, are also failing them in the classrooms. Only failed programs like "Every Child Left Behind" are instituted from the feds.

You two are like dumb and dumber.

At least when Buster argues, he has points. You two are just bumbling weirdos standing behind him waiting for your opportunity to make another knee-jerk comment.

That looks like my blood pressure line any time I have to argue with the Right about how they caused this mess but deny any involvement whatsoever.

It's not spin. It's an observation. Mississippi is the worst. BUT, if history is any indication, we will all be where Mississippi is shortly and they will be even worse. They are apparently just ahead of he curve.

Completely agree. I don't believe that I used the word "fed" in my post there. The point is a general one, we have given people ****** government educations. Simply pointing out the irony that the government--any government--does a pretty bad job in education. We don't need federal mandates to teach to the test, we need competition and vouchers. We need funding but we need it to go to the right place. And we need welfare reform and a program that can prove that it lifts people out of poverty.

Until that happens, I think the criticism is moot. Sorry for not elaborating earlier.

I posted a chart in the presidential thread about federal tax money used compared to federal tax money given. Basically Mississippi has the 2nd worst difference in that category.

This doesn't really say much other than that they are really really poor.

Instead of states, you can break this down into cities and find highs and lows everywhere. Living in New York City is nothing like living in Detroit, living in Denver is nothing like living in Gary, IN. I think these charts miss the point sometimes. Some states have higher highs to offset the lowest lows.

First of all, the idea of states seceding is dumb. But I see that you all aren't really talking about that anymore. Because I value my sanity, I'm not going to go read back through this thread or try to interject in the impressive debate taking place here.

I will just say that I would absolutely LOVE for the "red states" to secede and make a go of it. They would be a third world country inside of a decade.

Talk about "I lol'd"

I had always been under the impression that Vermont had the highest percentage of active secessionists.

Boom.... Absolutely correct. Let them go. They'd make Mexico look like Club Med.

IDK, that could be true. But if they seceded they'd just be Canada Light. I don't wish any ill on them. I want to see the dark red states try to make a go of it on their own. We should have let them go the last time they tried it. If they had succeeded they would be so poor they would be trying to sneak into Mexico to get jobs and Mexico would be trying to figure out how to deal with their immigration problem.
