Lakers fire Mike Brown as coach - latimes.com

The Lakers have fired Mike Brown as coach after the team's 1-4 start, according to a person familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak publicly about it.

Brown was barely a month into his second season with the team, which struggled badly amid high expectations.

It was unclear who would be his replacement.

It was believed to be the earliest firing of a coach in the team's history. Del Harris was relieved of his duties 12 games into the 1999 season.

Knee-jerk reaction. This is a team with new pieces. Sometimes I just don't understand what management is thinking. Oh well...

EDIT: Plus, Howard has got two coaches fired in the past two years. Not bad I should say...

Mike Brown should have never been hired as the coach in the first place, he is not qualified to run a team like the LA Lakers. Jim Buss, hired Mike Brown without consulting with ANYONE and his hire was met with alot of questions.

I'm glad they got rid of him, now they need to get the right coach at the right time....some ppl may not agree, but I think they should go after retired Jerry Sloan. Sloan was done wrong by the Jazz after 20+ years of quality coaching, im just not sure he doesnt want to stay retired.

EDIT: in checking other internet reports, it appears im not the only one that would like to see Jerry Sloan at the next Lakers' coach.

From what I heard on the radio in relation to this, they weren't real happy with his 1st Laker season last year and they did not like the way he was trying to utilize his new weapons this year...Rome kept using the term "a programmatic non-fit"

Mike Brown is defensive coach, and by most accounts he a really good defensive coach(and by all accounts, he is a really good person). But I think the Lakers need an offensive-minded coach, who puts an emphasis on defense, not a defensive minded coach. Brown's ineptitude as an offensive coach is why i believe he was never qualified to be the HC of the Lakers; to a smaller degree, his lack of media-savy and how to manage 'large personalities' was a factor as well.

Looks like SC isn't the only LA team not living up to their hype.

I had head on another show a few days ago that instead of having Nash dish the ball all over as he has his whole career, that he was posting up a lot more in Brown's system.

For a defensive coach the D was horrific. As many "stars" as this team has their roster is built to win by contesting shots and scoring easy baskets. Not by getting in a track meet, first to 115. I am willing to bet this team will lose every game that both teams are over 105. Their defense was the problem from the get go. They are talented enough to figure things out on the offensive end.

Coaching options:

Phil Jackson (Good LAWD would this be amazing)
Jerry Sloan-Awesome coach
Mike D'Antonio-please please please no
Nate McMillan-meh
Brian Shaw-knows LA and the Lakers up and coming guy

A name I haven't seen but spent a long time on the lakers bench before going to Minnesota to a bad team is Kurt Rambis.

Buss just said yesterday that Brown was not in trouble. And he fires him the next day? I would have thought they would give him the homestand to try and get things going in the right direction.

Jim Buss is a tool but usually when an owner, gm, star player says so and so's job is safe/i am their biggest supporter in a poor season usually has the hammer coming down on them.

Hahahahahaha

"@Chris_Broussard: Lakers insist they chose D'Antoni over Phil. Say triangle offense similar to Princeton and would not have been good fit for roster."

Cowherd this morning justified not hiring a tried and true veteran head coach by. Noting that Lou holtz didn't work out well for south Carolina.

Sounds like the preferred Phil, but didn't want all his crazy travel and staffing demands. (Scottie Pippen???)
