Whatever. Quit whining. Mayock's smart and fair.
Pitt played their balls off today and he respected that. He also respected that we stood up big late, the way winning teams do. And that was indeed a great college football game. I might not describe it as "fun," but any impartial observer with a pulse would.

Years ago Tom Pagna was doing color on ND and was calling the Oregon State game. Before each snap he would call the play NDwas going to run and they did run it. Of course, O.S. knew what the play was also, and had about nine players there to stop the play. The result was we were pounded and lost. And Tom Pagna was replaced. It never occurred to Davies that if the color commentator knew the play based upon personnel and formation, perhaps their defensive coordinator did also.
Instead of firing the color coomentator on the radio, perhaps he should have studied the offensive coordinator's play calling.
Moral: perhaps it's us, not them. Leave Mayock alone, play better.

Reps. For what it's worth, I definitely disagreed with some of Mayock's commentary but he was right: games like this are what make college football great.

Christ........now we're complaining about MAyock. I think some of you just need to complain about anything.

100% certain Mayock is a fan of ND Football and ND in general. I ran into him in the Gug when I was out there and he spent 2 mins chatting and talking about how impressed he was with the general direction of the program and how much he liked BK. After he went behind the closed doors the security guard came over and said how much he enjoys talking to Mayock and how nice a guy he is. I think you guys are barking up the wrong tree here, Mayock was probably more upset with how poorly they were playing and at the end of the day he does have to be objective.

I agree with many of the folks here whonthought that Mayock was a bit anti ND today. Some calls he was empathic about only to be proven wrong. Normally I think his analysis is genius and the bets in the biz but not today. In hate USC but I even thought that Pat Haden put his links to USC aside and bought in to being a domer. We can take it out by beating BC like a drum next week. Too bad Mayock won't be calling that drubbing.

If you put the game on mute, then start Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon right when the ball is kicked off... freaky deaky. Fuh-reaky deaky.

I'll chime in here, too:

Though Mayock is usually quite impartial and interesting and provides solid color commentary and analysis, today he was somewhat biased in his analysis and enthusiasm.

Every great play we had was met with subdued analysis but when Pitt did something positive he was pouring rainbow-flavored kisses all over them.

There are threads like this all over the Internet and there's never this many after a game no matter how great or poorly we play. I'd say this is a case of where there's smoke there's fire. A lot of people really did notice the uncharacteristic bias.

Plus, it came out at some point in the broadcast that he is from PA, and that could have something to do with it.

If you guys want an ND Homer in the booth push mute. I want gusy who know football and call the game as they see it. This is why you bitch about Herbstriet, not because he is bad, but because he says things you do not want to hear. That is Mayock's job. Name 5 guys better, i'll wait?

This X1000

I joined this board in 06, when it wasn't popular to be here, but rational fans could talk football. Irish football. Any football.

First everyone complained about Pat Hayden. Ok, I get it. He is a USC man. He honestly called the games fair....still people complained. Then it became very popular to hate on Hammond. Why? Because he mispronounced names from time to time? Or looks like a weirdo? Whatever.....I see where you come from. But I have grown up listening to these guys.

Now you want to hate on Mayock?!?!?! Now I am realizing you guys are either trolls or will NEVER be happy with whoever calls ND games. Mayock is one of the best guys calling NFL/College games in the business. His knowledge of the game is unreal and accurate. He gives credit where credit is due. Just because this is OUR network, doesn't mean they have to kiss our butts throughout the whole game.

I LOVE Notre Dame football on NBC. They represent us well and I think the commentators do just as good as a job. NEG rep me all you want!

If ND goes up 14-3, like they should have, and gobon to win 38-20, this thread doesnt exist. Just a product of the emotion of potentially losing ans not hearing what you want to hear.

Sorry bros, Mayock is hands down the best in the business. Just because you didn't like what he had to say, maybe truth hurts?
All the "fun" references, were related to us. And our D. And if we really are a "team of destiny" than we needed to step up and win the game. We did.

Ya'll can pine for the days of Haden, I'll take Mayock any day of the week and twice on Saturday.

I too thought Pat Haden did a great job of color commentating just like Collinsworth did and now Mayock. I prefer people that call games right down the middle. People that give credit and blame to whomever deserves it at the time. I don't want homers who will sugarcoat every average play and average player and make them look like world beaters when they are average.

I havent had a problem with Mayock at all since he got in the booth, but all the "this is fun" comments were extremely annoying; I may have let out some profanity once or twice after the 4th or 5th time he said it.

Something was going on with Mayock, there were a few times he seemed to be somewhat 'confrontational' with Dan Hicks; talking over him, challenging him to take sides on a reviewed play, making 'golf guy' comments, and of course his "this is fun" mess.

Agreed, but Mayock was clearly hanging on Pitt's nuts throughout most of the game. That's where my problem is.

He is straight up rooting for Pitt
Yeh very obvious and I'm so glad someone else besides me noticed. Its funny isnt it when Notre Dame is shabby all the little pats on the head they get but when they win-the truth comes out. That was a pretty sad display of showing gut feelings on where he's really coming from. As I said both of those guys are in no way pulling for an undefeated season-they and NBC simply dont want it to happen. It was nice to have Hicks in there even though Mayock really step on him a couple of times with his remarks about now wait a minute Wake and BC have something to say about this. Of course they do and it will be season makers for them-I hope Notre Dame beats BC by 40. Mayock your a fine analyst but now we know. Hatred comes from fear-the rest of college football doesnt want to have to deal with a strong recruiting Notre Dame. And one last thing, I really dont care what anyone else says about people complaing about this tv presentation. If there was an alternative to watch these games I would not be watching NBC. Even when Notre Dame is on ABC/espn/CBS the games are more neutrally presented. NBC does not do a good job-they simply do not do a good job. FROM THEIR STANDPOINT ITS JUST WORK.

I like Mayock, but you can't tell me that the "This is fun" x100 wasn't getting annoying. He definitely knows what he's talking about when it comes to the x's and o's I'll give him credit for that.

I have a question though, would it be wrong of NBC to have 1 ND homer with Mayock?
That way any time the ND guy gets out of line Mayock can set him straight.

If he wasn't bias why did he not react to the no call pass interference during the game? By rule it was interference. Would most officials let it slide yes but most would have called some of the beating taken place. I understand Pitt had more to compliment and rightfully so. I was referring to any time we ran down the sidelines he wanted a review to see if we stepped out early, or if a pass hit the ground, or a possible knee down. It just seemed like he was very critical of ND but not of Pitt. Was it a bias view possibly but it is the way I took it. I will be watching next week on mute.

When you start to show excellence, there is more room for people to be critical. We have worked up to the number 3 team in the nation. We have one of the best defenses in the country. We turned the ball over 3 times. We let Graham go for rougly 170 yds. He should be critical.

I think Mayock is one of the best color commentaries in the business.

NBC doesn't want an undefeated season for ND??? Your tinfoil hat must be too tight.

NBC is loving this resurgence, and run towards an undefeated season. You don't think the throngs of bandwagon adds as this season progresses are turning on TV sets??

To those complaining about Mayock's bias, I think he has done a good job of being fair. There was much to pick apart in yesterday's win. Hell, if you were to insert Mayock's comments in the gameday threads, a large number of posters would be calling him a Notre Dame pollyanna.

Are you serious with this???? Damn dude, you're having an awful year aren't you? YOU keep hoping for ND to lose (you have been all year - remember how often you said we'd suck this year and we'd never be good again???), and now you want to try and say NBC wants ND to lose? Da fu*k????

Anyway, thank God we have Mayock. Other than Collinsworth, he's the best in the business IMO and we're extremely lucky to get to listen to him over so many other schmucks out there. ND played like crap yesterday, the PI call against Pitt WAS a joke, and we deserved to hear how bad we were. Might not have been his best game for you guys, but to say he's biased against ND is a joke. He called it like he saw it.

We won...I ain't gonna b!tch about the best color guy in college football..

Mayock is a hack. He may be a great draft guy, an evaluator of talent, but it ends right there! Who was it that had one of their runs reviewed for a possible fumble, on Saturday? Maybe Golson? Mayock was actually ADVOCATING for the play being called a fumble, when the replay CLEARLY showed that it wasn't. Then, after about the 10th time of looking at the replay, he changed his tune from "It was coming out before his knee hit the ground." to "It started to come out, and then he regained possession of it." THAT is the kind of thing that I have mentioned, many times, in the gameday chat; when it comes to video review, it seems that Mayock thinks that EVERY review should go against the Irish. It makes it seem like he is clearly rooting for the opponent. Most of his "analyses" are 'Dr. Obvious' moments, and he really doesn't add anything to the broadcast. I'm not screaming for his head, but he sure as he!! isn't "one of the best".

I just watched the game again (with less emotion). I concur with the title of this post. He sounded almost angry when that pass interference against Pitt was called late in the game. He seemed to be happy when it was 20-6 and it seemed like ND was going to lose. Also, arguing for a fumble during a play that was not close to a fumble was obnoxious on his behalf.

Either he really doesn't like ND, or he is trying too hard to seem fair, and he comes off slightly MarkMayish.

Mayock is the Madden of college football without the over use of the tellastrater (sp). I agree with Kmoose that he can evaluate talent and break down schemes but as commentator he is freaken annoying. I'm not even saying I think he is really anti-ND but he is capt obvious and it personally annoys the hell out of me we he says "my bad". IMO he is NOT the best in the biz, maybe in the top 10 purely on his knowledge of the game, which can can't be argued.

"This is fun" was the only problem I had with Mayock, simply said it too often. But then again, I'm sure it was a tremendously entertaining and "fun" game for viewers with no rooting interest to watch, so it was true.

I didn't think it was fun, because that game literally drained 4.5 years of life from my body. But that's because I had an interest. When I watch Thursday night games at work, I usually don't care one way or another. And the thrillers truly are "fun."

When you are a fan of football and right and wrong I think if you step back from the ND World, you would be pissed too. How many people were pissed when Oklahoma got a completely bad call against Oregon a few years back. Calls that are so egregious boil the blood of even the tepid fan. My opinion as it happened was like THANK YOU, then seeing the replay I was like UH NOTHING TO SEE HERE... It was a bad call and it cost Pittsburgh a game that they came out and punched the #3 team in the country right in the mouth.
