Guys, keep in mind that RB and slot are the same position group. Cam will likely play both in the spring, like all the RBs.

Does anyone else think he has a chance to maybe start or at least see significant playing time at RB with GA3 next year? Maybe split carries? Carlisle can play that hybrid and we'll see how Mahone does this spring, but Cam is such a good runner it would be hard not to give the time he deserves

Yeah, I could definitely see Cam playing a lot of slot WR in the spring. Riddick and Toma graduate. Davonte Neal will be the only slot guy left. We'll need someone else to step in. But of course slot WR and RB are the same position group, so it's not like that will be a big change for him.

I think Carlisle will see a lot of time in the slot. We'll see. Cam could be good there too. I just like the way he runs though. Just a really smart football player.

I see Cam sliding almost seemlessly into Theo's role. Those two are almost identical in style of play and measureables. With Cam probably having the edge in speed.
The ability to get tough yards, make you miss, catch the football, vision, even height and weight all leave me with zero conscern replacing Theo. I salute Theo for everything he's done at ND but Cam is ready to fill his shoes.

I cannot shake the intuition that Cam McDaniel is a much-better-than-good back waiting to happen if Coach just gives him the chance. I understand the current positional overload, and the seniority of Cierre and Theo block even GAIII from carries.

Next year MIGHT not be that different, however, with Carlisle coming on board. This partially creeps me out, as I see a massive missed opportunity possible here. Get the guy in the game. He's REAL quick, plenty fast, REAL tough and strong-legged, fast to see the holes, and good at blocking --- why else is he back there as GAIIIs protector on KOs?

I re-watched the Onward Notre Dame show again. Some of the shots of Cam's runs during the Miami game really got me fired up. If he puts on some weight, his running style reminds me of Mark Edwards. He should also get the Edwards crew cut too!

Where? Link please.

Sorry, saved on my DVR. I won't delete it because I think it is one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. NFL Films does a great job.

You're welcome to come over and watch. Just bring beer. My wife is a great cook so we will take care of the food.

McDaniel honors friend, steps up for Irish
November, 2, 2012
Nov 29:30AM ETBy Matt Fortuna | ESPN.com Recommend0Tweet0Comments0EmailPrintSOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On Oct. 14, Gavin McDaniel and Jacob Logan jumped from a cliff into Possum Kingdom Lake, 80 miles west of Forth Worth, Texas, the way most in that area do on nice days outside.

"I think my brother jumped off first and [Logan] jumped off next," Notre Dame running back Cam McDaniel said. "My brother came up, and he didn't."

A five-day search ensued before the body of 17-year-old Logan -- a senior receiver for nationally ranked Coppell High -- turned up, devastating the community.

This past Saturday in Norman, Okla., Cam McDaniel offered a tribute in front of his family, friends and coaches who made the three-hour trip, along with the millions who watched the most-viewed college football game of the season. Returning kicks in place of the ill George Atkinson III, McDaniel switched jersey numbers with cornerback Jalen Brown, wearing No. 21 to honor his fallen friend.

Wearing a borrowed number to honor a fallen friend, Cam McDaniel returns a kick against Oklahoma."Just an extreme blessing, an extreme honor beyond what words can explain," said McDaniel, normally No. 33. "Just a tribute to my friend and former teammate Jacob Logan -- phenomenal young man. He was a sophomore when I was a senior in high school, amazing playmaker."

"It's extremely humbling, it's eye-opening," McDaniel added. "It just reminds us that life is but a vapor."

Little brother Gavin honored Logan five days after his death by rushing for a 75-yard touchdown on his first carry, en route to a 196-yard performance that earned him player-of-the-week honors from area media outlets.

In helping the Irish to arguably their biggest victory in 19 years, Cam McDaniel returned four kickoffs for 77 yards this past Saturday, on par with the team average. He has done everything asked and then some when his number has been called in the backfield, however rare that might be when playing behind Cierre Wood, Theo Riddick and Atkinson.

The sophomore has carried the ball 20 times this season for 114 yards and a touchdown. He has added two catches for 41 yards, this after spending most of the spring at cornerback before cross-training at both positions in camp after more freshmen arrived on campus.

McDaniel, who had not played corner since pee-wee, said he has taken the cue from new starters such as Matthias Farley and KeiVarae Russell in being ready to step in at any moment, just as those two were when Jamoris Slaughter's and Lo Wood's seasons ended because of Achilles injuries.

In limited action, he has left an impression.

"He's got a great deal of confidence in himself that when you call upon him, he's going to play really good football," coach Brian Kelly said. "He feels like more than anything else that he will be a huge contributor to our success, and we believe in that as well, so you have a guy that knows that he's going to impact the program. It's just a matter of time."

Cam is one of my favourite players on this team. Would love to see him get extended meaningful carries on Offense later in his career.

I also liked the fact that Cam brought more shiftness to the kick returns.
George can hit a homerun if there is a crease there but if theres no crease Cam can make one or two miss with more regularity than George, for some extra yardage.
In my opinion he would be even better suited as a punt returner because he's shifty, confident, has good hands and is fairly hard to tackle.

During the coach presser, Kelly said if they need to just get to the 25 yard line or something like that Cam would be in and Atkinson out. That kind of peaked my interest as I would think the coach would want as much yardage as possible, but I guess in certain situations, only so much yardage is expected and Cam is expected to get that.

Anyway I thought that was a weird thing to say. I personally would not be thinking to myself (if I was a coach)..."If only we can get it to our 25....."

Cam is one of my favorites on this team. I have always liked him. I think he gets meaningful plays next year.

I noticed that comment to. Home run hits on kr are usually one cut and speed. Cam is shifty and can pick up that extra 5 yards or so in a different way.

Next years depth chart imo:

1. GA3
2/3. Carlisle (will see field early, may have to move around to slot in order to accomodate getting Bryant on the filed)
2/3. Bryant (kid is studly)
4. Cam (could get a lot of slot work)
5. Mahone

Mahone will be alot higher than 5th on the depth chart, I guarantee it.

Who knows how it will fill out? If we did one last winter, K Russell would have been on it somewhere, and Riddick might not even be on it.

One thing is for sure, we won't be thin back there. Crazy talented and tons of depth. Good situation to be in.

Since this is Cam's thread, I will say I wouldn't bury Cam. He's a football player - he will find his way onto the field in some capacity. Pretty confident about that.
