Time to hand the reigns back to Tommy Rees

I know that the kid routinely gets slammed on these boards. However the truth of the matter is that the offense just runs so much better when he is at the helm. It's just time to make a permanent change.

Bottom line is that you play to win the games. Maybe Golson will further develop and be a star at some point. Unfortunately that time hasn't arrived yet.

Tommy needs to be the man behind center right now. Especially if we have any hopes of BCS games.

Tommy would have been sacked 7 times if he played the whole game.

^This 100%. Everytime I thought that they should put Rees in to have a better pre-snap read, I reminded myself that his lack of escpability is far worse than Everett's inability to read defenses before the snap.

I trust Kelly either way to make the best decision game by game.

I assume the reason Golson was taken out of the Michigan game but was left in the Stanford game was our line's relative ability (or inability) to block. Against Michigan, Tommy's strengths outweighed Golson's elusiveness. Against Stanford, well, like others have said ... Tommy probably would've been sacked 7 times.

To play devil's advocate: Who do you feel more comfortable with to run a 2-minute drill in order to get TD/Field goal at this point in the season?

I don't think the central issue is whether or not to let Tommy start/play majority of game. I think a tougher decision is who has the reigns when our backs are against the wall at the end of the game.

Oh, for the love of Pete. Please tell me this is not the new thing we have to talk about every week. What in the world is wrong with the current set up? The way Golson and Rees are being used presently plays to both of their strengths and it is working, as evidenced by the "0" in the loss column

I'm not sure TR would have been sacked that much. As soon as he came in he was making adjustments and getting rid of the ball quickly which is a key when going against the blitz.

Having said that, I believe the current system is the best of both worlds. EG isn't going to get better standing on the sidelines. The D allows BK to continue with EG and bring in Mariano Rivera as the situation dictates.

Guys, Tommy Rees had 18 TOs last year. Let's not forget how painful that was to watch. Yes, he's making the correct pre-snap reads and that's obviously important. Once he recognizes the all-out blitz, he just lofts it up and the WRs so far have made GREAT plays when Tommy has been in, out-playing the DB in one on one situations. Golson is not as good at Tommy at this, but let's not act like Tommy's out there dissecting a defense. Give him a full game against a team like Stanford, and I'd bet the stat line looks like this: 7 sacks, a fumble, 2 INTs (where he just lofts it up over the middle because when he's pressured it's either that or sack).

He's still the physically limited Tommy from last year. Still has no feet, a weak arm, and makes questionable throws when pressured (look at first drive of Miami game).

Tommy's played good in his limited role. His receivers have made some damn good plays to help him out.

EG is charged with 7 TO's this year so far. Not saying that Tommy should start; I love our current setup. However... Golson needs to learn how to protect the ball.

EG's also faced better defenses to this point than Tommy did last year. And this is EG's first year starting, whereas last year was Tommy's 2nd.

Agree that EG needs to limit turnovers, but his TOs are primarily fumbles whereas Tommy was just throwing the ball up for grabs. Fumbles are easier to fix in the short-term. I love that EG doesn't just chuck it up and instead escapes/takes sacks.

Those are wonderful excuses but he still needs to learn to protect the ball. This has been an issue of his since day 1 and this entire board knows that.

4 fumbles and 3 INT's.

Because they can't score TD's with Golsen against a decent defense. He cannot read receivers and his first reaction is to run. 6 interceptions between this game and michigan and not one TD to show for it. Without our defense (which is obviously exceptional) - we don't win, period. At least Rees can find someone in the Red Zone. And if he doesn't - then they can just kick field goals like they do now. True Golsen avoided a a few rushes, but he also missed seeing open receivers on those plays that a "throw first" QB would have seen.

Agreed Golson isn't playing 'great'. But guess what? Tommy's far from a great BCS-level quarterback. If Tommy wasn't turnover-prone, could drill a 10-yard out, could withstand sacks without fumbling, then yes, start him. It's just that he can't. Golson is made for this spread. Has a better arm, ability to make the defense focus on an extra runner because of his legs, and at some-point he needs experience so he CAN improve pre-snap reads and reading a defense. We're 6-0, why stop now? It's too easy to love the back-up QB. Some of you need to watch the 2011 season again before you beg for Tommy. And that team had Michael Floyd and Jonas Gray.

Still think my post is the real issue, this other stuff about Golson not being a throw first QB is nonsense. What if there is two minutes left in the game and we need to drive down the field and score? Then who do we want in the game?

I just think its a waste of time with this same discussion of who should get the majority of the playing time because the arguments so heavily weigh in favor of EG.

GolsOn.

And he found the endzone vs. Stanford on a great pass.

Personally, I love what Kelly is doing. He has a QB in Tommy who is playing really well, but has reach his ceiling. He also has a young guy who has so much potential. I think Kelly is balancing winning right now and the future. It's important that he develops Golson, because down the road he might be the difference between us winning against an outstanding team or loosing. It's important that Everett goes in there next week and continue to grow. It's really cool to have Tommy ready to go if anything happens.
