I made a simple point, and everyone runs with it! My point wasn't about even versus odd, or one gap versus two. Simply when most people talk 43 versus 34 defensive ends, they are two completely different animals. 34 doesn't have contain where 43 does, consequently when you talk size the 34 de must be much bigger and heavier (strength goes without saying). 43 ends can be almost hybrid db's, if they can contain, and speed rush the passer, they are okay. 34 ends have a much more disciplined in the trenches job.

is this the Mattingly thread or the 3-4 tutorial thread??

Let's go ahead and officially make this a 3-4 LB tutorial thread:

Anyone able to superimpose an action shot of Danny on Donny Baseball's 84 Topps rookie card and able to change the "Yankees" to "Notre Dame?" That would be sweet....militaryirish I'm looking directly at you.... (or anyone, really...)

he lives there and probably a little bit of a Washington fan, but I am not too concerned.

Looks like he is taking that Washington visit. Friday links | Husky Football Blog | The Seattle Times

Hope he is solid. I get the impression he is going to be a real good one.
As do I but I think he knows that the DOG position he was recruited to play is quite deep and will have to bide his time with most likely scenario with him not seeing the field as a freshman and then mostly getting PT in special teams until he gets true opportunity to play the DOG.

The reason I say that is because Spond is playing great and if he continues at this level he's going to get the PT. Then there is Jaylon Smith who is a special talent who I believe it was Rivals that said he's the best OLB they've seen since starting rivals, a once in a decade talent. Well he's too good not to play and I think come next year him and Spond are sharing the DOG. After that you've got Ben Councell and everything that we are saying about Mattingly now, we were saying about Councell 2 years ago.

Come next season even though I would expect him to RS if he makes it to South Bend he could be further down the depth chart with the real possibility that Romeo Okwara could be moved to DOG. Kelly & Co. have been blown away at his athleticism and strength but they didn't anticipate who good he is in coverage and have said while they are going to continue to get him stronger they aren't going to bulk him up because they want him lean and fast.

Rumor on II that he's visiting Washington this weekend

My Lord. I realize they are close to home, but that program is dreadful. Wake up parents, your son has one of the greatest opportunities of his life.

I think you make good points. Except I think Okwara will be a CAT or OLB. I think the staff was pleasantly surprised that they had another option when Spond was out, but I don't think he is actually built for that position.

So according to Sapp Danny has raised some concerns with the coaching staff ... he has started to like tight end more during his senior season.

He did visit Washington ... we've tried to address his concerns, but with all the interested kids and the limited spots, Sapp doesn't think we'll mess around if he keeps taking visits and wavering.

Personally I love the idea of moving him to tight end, especially if we pick up Muhammad. If Kelly wants to keep using two- and three-tight end sets, we could use another TE in this class, and we already have two stud OLBs. If telling him we'll consider using him as a tight end is what it takes to keep him, I'm all for doing that.

Ya I saw he visited Washington, but didn't think anything of it. Guess there is more to it than I thought.

If he wants to play TE, I'm all for it. The depth chart is a litle tight at CAT and DOG. I think he is a little undersized for CAT. At DOG he seems more like Councell than Spond or Jaylon. I don't see him beating out those two, and I don't know why I'd think he is better than Councell either.

On the other hand, we need more TEs if we plan to continue witht the present offense, especially if there are injuries.

This is who I think he'd be below at the various LB/TE spots:

CAT:
Shembo
Ishaq
Okwara
Rabassa

MIKE:
Grace
Anzalone
Moore
Deeb

WILL:
Fox/Calabrese
Randolph

DOG:
Spond
Councell
Jaylon

TE1
Welch
Heuerman

TE2
Niklas
Koyack

Wouldn't care if he decommitted. We have bigger needs than LB, specially if Muhammad and Anzalone are Irish.
