I like the fist pump and run off stage after there are no questions on the phone.

My suspicion is EG has been banged up a bit and the bye week was needed to get him back to health. Tommy would obviously take more first team reps if EG was resting the body. Tommy taking more snaps than EG would lead to plenty of speculation over the starter.

Wasn't Kelly also talking in the presser about EG having a tough schedule this semester and having a hard time balancing that? I think Kelly is shielding EG quite and Tommy serves a great role to help us play for today AND the future at the same time.

Wow, I have been periodically on all the various sites today and somehow missed this. I must be sleep walking or working one or the other. Agree with Ironman that Prister's comments are telling and I also think that Sapp is doing the same by stating he has heard it but "is going by the depth chart." IMO, I just want to win the game but I did mention this during another game thread awhile back and that this I think if BK continues to do this he will lose Everett. Now I may be getting ahead myself but I think he physically has immense talent and sometimes you have to let him play. Look at other first time starting quarterbacks. Mariotta out here in Oregon comes to mind. He turned the ball over 4-5 times in one game but at the same time he is so talented he threw for 400 yards and a bunch of TD's.

HAHAHA. This is funny. Poor Tommy, what he did wasn't that bad. Maybe, it's just me. Reality of being a Notre Dame football player I guess.

My biggest issue is that, if Everett truly is the quarterback Kelly is committed to, WHY take him out when we face one of our weakest defenses to date? At least give him a chance to prove himself. We got through Purdue/MSU/UM unscathed and now we have the perfect opportunity to get Everett some confidence. This is a horrible idea in my opinion and I hope it is just a rumor.

If repeat IF this rumor has merit, and it's not to do with a lingering injury on Golson's part, I only see one reason BK wouldn't let him struggle with growing pains, Mant'i.

This is his last year, we're undefeated, and Teo's up for Heisman consideration. He may feel that this is not the time to rebuild the QB position and Tommy gives us the best chance to make all the reads, check into the right running plays, and find Eifert in the seam when they sell out for the run.

I said before the season started that I thought we should either keep Tommy as our starter or go with Gunner. EG is an incredible talent, but starting him this year, best case scenario, only leads to another QB controversy next season when our 5* stud is a year older and closer to taking the reigns.

I think BK (if this is true) may have decided that we can make a serious run at this schedule, and Mant'i deserves as much.

The other thing is, after seeing how Stanford's front seven has played, the only outcome of that game I can see is Tommy getting sacked over and over again. Yeah sure, Tommy can definitely lead us to a win this weekend, but when an extremely athletic Stanford front seven comes to South Bend, I think Everett's athletic ability by far gives us a better chance to win.

IF the rumor is true, I think the bolded is really all there is to it. From what I've read about BK, before and after he became our coach, he has a maniacal drive to win every game. He knows he needs to work young guys in so they get some seasoning before he has to rely on them as starters, but I don't think he will ever sacrifice even one game because he thinks its better for the team in the long run. If Tommy starts, it's because BK thinks he gives us the best chance to win. He didn't leave Golson in at the end of the Purdue game, even though it may have made sense to get him some experience running a high pressure 2-minute drill. No, he brought in Tommy in the Purdue game and in the Michigan game because he wanted to win those games, plain and simple, and he thought Tommy gave us the best chance to do it.

I by no means hate tommy but I hope Bk saw what Stanfords D did to keith price who is extremely athletic. To your point MPClinton on third down and plus 5 against standford I don't give tommy much of a chance.

Stanford has a great front 7, no doubt, but one caveat: Washington was basically playing with its second string offensive line. I think Stanford got a little more credit than it deserved for that game.

But Clinton and Lucci's point remains. Our O-line has been lackluster and Stanford will probably get pressure on our QBs.

I left that out for the sake of not getting long winded so thank you, but look what Michigan did to Tommy when he was first place in the game. They blitzed from the left, blitzed from the right, and then blitzed some more. We won that game but if I remember correctly when tommy was in we only had 2 drives that were worth a crap.

Maybe because these are the kinds of defenses that Tommy torches? I don't know, just playing devil's advocate. But Tommy last year wrecked teams where we were able to:

1. Establish the run.
2. Pass protect.

We should be able to do both in this game... the one thing we can't do is make mistakes or have "nothing" drives. The irony? The whole reason Tommy got benched was because he couldn't protect the football......

I'll also add that Golson 100% MUST play against Stanford because with their pass rush Tommy will be dead to right on 50% of plays just like last year. The most disappointing thing about Golson so far this year, IMO, is that he isn't actually a dynamic runner... he's relatively shifty and athletic but he doesn't have near the ability of a Robinson, Miller, or even Klein.

Anyways, doubt rumor is true unless Golson had a bad 2 weeks of practice.

When watching the presser yesterday, I remember when asked how EG was progressing, BK was less than enthusiastic. He mentioned how he was 'still cooking' and seemed generally deadpan about it.

I didn't really think about it too much till now, but it's kind of glaring with this rumor floating.

I seriously doubt there's any merit to this rumor.

Until it's validated, everybody enjoy:

Whoa...hang on a second. I agree that our running game has not been up to par, but, it has nothing to do with CW's effort.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like I was calling CW out as the reason we aren't running all that well. I just remember the flashes I saw in his freshman year and thought, man, this kid could be NASTY if he keeps getting better. Cierre is pretty effing good, don't get me wrong. I just keep hoping for him to have a breakout performance that makes people say WHOA! What was THAT? I know it's not really his fault we haven't gotten the ground game going in the past 3 games. I just want Cierre to explode one of these games.

Another comment Kelly made was the ability to audible at the line. Golson can change from one running play to another running play. Tommy can change from a run to a pass or vice-versa.

That is a huge difference. I was kind of surprised he would say that in public to be honest. If true, then Tommy would give the offense a lot more flexibility, especially against the young defense Miami has. I still prefer Golson but if Tommy has gained control of where he puts the ball, and can see more than one receiver, then ok, just win the game.

We have to start scoring points.

Totally ... he is shifty and relatively quick but he is actually not very fast. Definitely not the runner I expected.

I'm a step ahead of you on this one. Post #633 in this thread.

I'm all about the W so if this is true then so be it as long as ND wins! I just can't believe that Golson isn't the long term guy after only 4 starts against good competition. I think he has done a pretty good job minus Michigan so I guess we'll see.

That's good to hear! I will say this though, if Tommy eve does have to step in and start, I am fine with it. No matter what I will always support whoever is in the game for us! I am way too much of a homer but there is nothing as a fan that I as well as all of you have not already had to deal with with this team. Irish till I die!
