And, I'm not a huge RUSH fan, but keeping them and Styx out of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is dumb. (As opposed to Run DMC...???)

I did not vote any solo artists. I thought this was for Bands. Would have to put Hendrix in there if we are voting solo artists as well.

Glad to see there is some appreciation for the Doors. Such a great band, but Morrison was the heart and soul. Could not go on without him as The Doors. That young man was a musical genius. Such a pity great artists like Morrison, Hendrix, and Janis left us at such a young age. They had so much more they could have given to music and the world. One can only dream about what wonders they could have shown us over the years.

Surprised to see the Eagles mentioned this many times. Just the mention of that band makes me thank the good Lord for child safety locks. My parents played a lot of them on road trips. Without the safety locks I would have pulled a tuck and roll on an interestate highway in my younger years.

Not sure if this is first one is "classic rock", but:
Bruce Springsteen and the East Street Band
Zeppelin
Cream
Stones
Journey

If Pearl Jam had been around before '92 they would have made my list.

I heard Nirvana on a classic rock station the other day.
So they and Pearl Jam are in. Pantera as well.
Gotta put Metallica and Sabbath.
The kinks
Aerosmith
The Doors
And Johnny Cash

Not in order:

The Kinks
The Who
The Stones
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
David Bowie

Classic punk:
Ramones
The Clash
Sex Pistols
Iggy Pop

Nice list but Iggy is not Punk.

Classic Rock bands in no order, and I am including all genres:
The Ramones: The Greatest American Rock Band PERIOD! I dare someone to argue with me
The Rolling Stones: Especially when Brian Jones was in the band
Led Zeppelin
The Beatles
The Stooges

I'm surprised so many people have Boston in their top 5. I like the band a lot but they have one good album.

RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH!RUSH! I will say it loud and proud!
Hate all you want but they are one of the best damn groups around. Still going strong since 1974, with all original members outside of Rutsy, whom they replaced after the first album. Ask the members of any band named above if they are in the top five or ten and you will get yes accross the board.
That reminds me, no one has metioned Yes yet!!!

Guys, the Beatles are number 1 and it isnt even close. They were the big bang in the rock/pop universe. They had to stop touring mid way through their career. ecause their concerts were turning into riot zones, controversial groups would go to them to advance their cause and assasination threats were the norm. They were really too big to exist by the time 1970 rolled around and finally collapsed under their own weight. 12 studio albums. 13 if you count Yesterday And Today. 2 or 3 albums worth of singles that were not on any albums, 20 number 1 hits and the top 5 at once. There own songs kept others from being number 1. By the time they were 29 they accomished this. John Lennon by himself was bigger and better than some of these bands mentioned. Paul McCartney as well. They were ridiculous.

There will NEVER be another Beatles.

The Beatles stopped touring because they could not perform their music live anymore. Yes The Beatles were a great group and if asked who is the greatest group in modern music I would say The Beatles. The OP asked who is the greatest ROCK band of all time, and that is a different animal. When it comes to just flat out rock bands, The Beatles are not #1.

I would agree they're the "greatest" "band" ever, but sometimes I think they venture into Pop rather than Rock.

FYI, I used to live in Londonderry about two blocks from where your avatar is from.

I understand the Beatles to be part of the classic rock genre. Now if we are talking Hard rock/acid rock then it's Led zepellin. And again, it isnt even close ;)

I disagree about the end of their touring. If youve watched the documentaries and listed to Harrison, McCartney, ect then youll discover that 1965 and early 66 were so negative touring wise, that touring after that was out of the question and it was good riddance as far as they were concerned.

The Beatles are NOT a classic rock band in my opinion. They lived more on the edge of Pop.

Beatles = Most over-rated band ever. Worse than Elvis Presley and Micheal Jackson.

Blasphemy. There's no way you ever gave them a thorough listening and came to that conclusion. They are by far the greatest band of all time. They set the bar for everyone else.

This is the worst opinion ever. The Beatles operated on another level, so yeah, their sound is a bit different than the Stones or Zeppelin. But I don't know how anyone can question their talent. If anything, they're underrated. Their music will be taught in school a hundred years from now along with Beethoven and the other great composers. If the White Album came out tomorrow and nobody had ever heard of the Beatles, it would be a number one album. Their music is timeless (at least everything from Rubber Soul on). Compare that to Elvis, whose music hasn't held up at all. Elvis sucks.

But.... An opinion nonetheless. Let's not judge. It is an opinion based question by the OP after all. ;)

Zeppelin
Sex Pistols (misfts, minor threat) i guess not classic rock, but classic nonetheless..lol
Skynyrd
Stones (not a big fan, but I acknowledge their greatness)
The Beatles (not a big fan, but I acknowledge their greatness as well)
Journey (they were classic rock before Steve Perry joined, a ballad-band after he joined)
Creedence Clearwater Revival (everyone likes this music, the only way you dont is because your tired of hearing it all the time)
Cream
Hendrix
The Black Crowes (this band was more contemporary, but they played classic rock from the start)

I left off alot of bands like Sabbath and Judas Priest, but I consider them Metal bands...Sabbath begat heavy metal, and Judas Priest refined heavy metal

Gotta go with:

1. Zeppelin
1a Zeppelin
1b Zeppelin
2. Boston
3. Allman Brothers
4. Van Halen
5. Blind Melon (more contemporary, but they belong on any list that has the words greatest and rock in it)
