God, this is such terrible news. Wish him a speedy recovery.

Is there no possibility for a medical redshirt?

He has already redshirt one time, so the question is can he get a 6th year.

It use to be that the NCAA only gave a sixth year if his first redshirt was also a medical redshirt. But the past year or two the NCAA has been more lenient, so there is a possibility but not a guarantee that he coud get the sixth year.

Whose to say he would even want a 6th year? He does have a child. This is awful

dang two achilles injuries in less than two months to the secondary...know it's easy to say this now, but this is exactly what went through mind when i saw him getting carried off

He was standing and leading the cheer in the locker room at the end of the game in the ICON video.

Don't need the safety depth... we still are loaded with numbers there [Motta, Farley, Hardy, Baratti, Badger, Turner, Prosise, even Shumate if we don't want him backing at CB].

I feel far worse for Jamoris than I do for the team; the team has the studs to adjust.

People need to give up on Neal to defense...smh.

Lol THIS ... With Shumate, Russell and Baratti all looking strong we have no need for Neal on D.

I thought I read on this site somewhere that the rule is less than 20% of the season for a medical redshirt. If so, Jamoris just missed it, right? Not sure though

Shumate looked real good last night IMO (though it is hard to see at the game sometimes). Farley looked pretty solid- but that is against MSU's passing game. I think Shumate could really help Farley in passing down's...?

Really disappointing for Slaughter, he was playing well. Remember that hit vs Purdue last week!

He's in his 5th year. Probably wouldn't get a 6th.

Interestingly, Case Keenum sat out his first year of college, played the next three years, then tore his ACL in the THIRD game of the next season, and was granted a sixth year. Almost exactly what happened to Jamoris...

Shumate has looked amazing, but Slaughter's leadership in the secondary is going to sorely be missed.

They do seem to have made some exceptions for cases where the first year has been a player decision (ie. Keenum - as per DillonHall's post below); but you're right, in the past it appeared to require two lost years due to injury to be granted a 6th. The following links to a blog on the NCAA site (not necessarily endorsed by them though) that indicates that a player decision to 'skip' a year typically doesn't add much weight for to 6th year medical waiver.
Reevaluating the Most Important Rule
If something outside of the control of the student-athlete and the institution takes away two years, the NCAA has a process for fixing that. But if such an event takes away only one year and the student or institution has control of another year (e.g. redshirt, transfer residence, etc.), the student-athlete is normally unable to get the lost year back.

I am trying to think back to 2008; wondering if there was anything that was documented about Jamoris having any injuries in his first year, which the staff/admin could produce as support for why they didn't let him participate.

Lol THIS ... With Shumate, Russell and Baratti all looking strong we have no need for Neal on D.

Cannot seem to find it officially on the NCAA website (you need to have an account to get into the eligibility center), but may find it later. I had always understood it to be 30% of games (which the NCAA would round-up to 4 games from 3.6), all of which must have been exhausted in the first half of the season. Based on that, the 2012 participation by Jamoris would not hinder him. Below link is about a WVU player (Garrison) and references the 30%:
No decision made yet on Garrison redshirt* - WVU - The Charleston Gazette - West Virginia News and Sports -
NCAA rules for a hardship waiver allow a player to apply for a medical redshirt provided he has played in no more than 30 percent of his team's games, all during the first half of the season. The NCAA rounds up 30 percent of 12 games (3.6) to four games.

Yes, he appears to fit the same profile as Jamoris, but seems to be an exception. Not sure if there was a back-story where he was shown to have been injured preventing him from participating in his first year, or whether the NCAA is indeed softening their position on this issue. My fingers are crossed for Jamoris to return to health most importantly, and then hopefully he does get a waiver.

Yeah, I cant find authoritative info but as far as I can tell the rule is that you can get a medical redshirt if you play in less than 30% of the games in first half of the season IF you have not already taken a redshirt year. A player like Slaughter who is already in his 5th year can only get a sixth year if he has lost two years to injury. I don't believe that was the case ... His redshirt year was elective, right?

Apparently Keenum was redshirted because Kevin Kolb was the solidified starter. I don't think he had any sort of injury.

I am not seeing it in here. Does anyone know what happened to Slaughter and how long he is out?
