There's a lot of Gerry Faust in Brian Kelly/NFL Thread

He's not going to make it here, and we're in for two more years mediocrity. All the hallmarks of "Faustball" are there:

1. Poor overall game management. Burning timeouts unnecessarily. Undisciplined players jumping offside, and/or killing drives with stupid penalties. Schizophrenic call playing from one week to the next. No offensive identity. Worse, Faust managed to upset some good teams. Kelly is not going to do that, and is going to lose more games to lousy teams. Tulsa, Navy, USF. It's going to happen again this year. Kelly simply does not have the organization ability, or the identity to prevent it from happening.

2. Who in their right mind takes the only true game breaker on his team, and sits him for the entire game? I'm talking about George Atkinson III. Clever Kelly had the bright idea to put the entire gameplan on the passing skills a true sophomore QB in his second game. That gameplan took his best player off the field. This is simply horrendous personnel allocation. Who does that? I'll tell you who: Gerry Faust clones who have no grasp of establishing a disciplined, consistent identity.

3. Watching the entire team look at Kelly for guidance during every snap in the second half was like dealing with constipation. Instead of having an offensive identity and running the offense, Kelly turns the focus to himself in some perverse notion that he can spontaneously make the right calls. Of course he can't, and we end up looking like a bad WAC team.. He can't recognize the defense and call the right play on the critical 3rd down play to keep the drive going, and the offense is scrambling to get the call off in time before the play clock expires. And the worse it gets the more he inserts himself into grab bagging to try to make something happen. Of course, nothing does and we have zero identity on offense. So, he changes QB's for the third straight friggin year, as if the QB is the answer. Brian, you are the problem, and no change of QB is going to fix your mediocrity. Great coaches establish an offensive identity and utilize their best players in a consistent establishment of an identity which eventually lead to excellence and domination. Kelly grab bags week to week. Seriously. We're back to Tommy Rees? You bet your *** we are, as this guy has zero ability to establish an identity, develop it and perfect it.

One last thing: If this guy keeps up with stuff like comparing the stadium to the Basilica, or blaming the players, the atmosphere, the turf etc., the fans in the stadium are going to steadily turn on him in the same way they turned on Faust and Davie. If there's one thing ND fans hate, it's excuse makers who are unable to say "The buck stops here". They turned on Kelly today, and it will get worse if he continues to say such incredibly stupid things and keeps laying these turds. The fans are fed up with this incredibly lousy football and all the stupid excuses and sideshow distractions. They want results, and it is obvious that we are nowhere near the development that people expect. Kelly deserved to be booed. There will be more to come, because like Faust, he's in way over his head.

Please. Faust arrived on campus with a high school playbook. Kelly is a proven winner on every level he's coached. Not even close to comparable

This board is starting to get laughable. WE BEAT A LEGITIMATE FOOTBALL TEAM WHILE LOSING OODLES OF VETERAN STARTERS TO INJURY.

How many good teams with good coaches lose to vastly inferior teams each week? Stuff happens. We overrcame. The end.

Sorry Patulski but you need to take a closer look at that game.. Kelly put his career on the line and made a gutsy call that got ND the win. Like LAX said we lost 7 starters.. SEVEN.. and pulled out the victory.

Although, I do agree with questioning where GAIII was in the gameplan..

#8 Arkansas just lost to UL-Monroe AT HOME.

If we were ranked #8 and lost to UL-Monroe (or someone of the like) at home, heads would be exploding right now.

As it is, we beat a pretty good Purdue team while suffering many injuries (including Golson. He's starting next week, so cool your "I'll die if Tommy Rees starts" jets). We are young. We will get better. We will play MSU hard next week.

Not saying I agree with everything BK does or has done, but come down from the clouds man. We won today. We're 2-0. It will probably be ok.

The comparison to Faust is off base (he literally had no business on a major college football sideline, much less ND), but there is some merit to these arguments.

Kelly teams are WILDLY inconsistent, even from game to game. The lack of identity is a concern, even if some of you want to dismiss it. The lack of GA III hasn't been explained, and barring an injury we don't know about, it is dumbfounding.

3 years in, and I'm still not sure what to make of him. Its all very bizarre.

Tthird straight year? Crist got injured the first year. Nice try. Also he isn't changing QB's, so stop drinking before posting.

I found myself defending BK and today's gameplan because I am an optimist, but I have to say, the OP makes some very valid points and I think you're all kidding yourselves if you didn't find yourself questioning the same things during this game.

Oh, dear.

Kelly's far from perfect. But he's moving things in the right direction. A lot of years lately, we lose that game today.

I do think there is a lack of offensive identity. Other than that, not so much. I can't say I remember the Faust years though, I thought I was old, but not that old. I've never seen so much whining and crying after a win though. Suck it up nancy.

The offense looks unorganized and the playcalling is terrible. These things shouldn't still be going on in year 3.

ND football won't get better until Kelly gets better. It seems like he doesn't get it.

Some of you guys are overlooking the simple fact that Purdue has a pretty good football team in 2012 and that we had virtually no decent film on that defense. It's hard to prepare when you don't have good film.

Hes inexperienced in pass proctection.

Yeah. Given the amount of pressure Purdue was bringing, I can see why they would have chose to keep the better blocker in more often. That said, a few touches for Atkinson probably wouldn't have been a bad idea. A homerun would have made this game considerably more comfortable.

first and third points mean nothing.

I'll buy pass protection as a reason not to have him be the featured back, but thats not really what anyone was looking for here. Riddick is fine in that spot, but there was no reason not to give your gamebreaker 6 -10 carries. Dumbfounding.

I wonder if towards the end of the game if he was worried about his penchant for fumbling. Also maybe he had a bad week and had fumbling issues. It could be many different reasons.

I'm going to guess that Kelly and Company (the other coaches) are probably more informed than you, re: George Atkinson's gamebreaking potential vs. other players' gamebreaking potential. That being said........ I'm not sure why he didn't get more touches, either. But there are a bunch of people in this, and other threads, who are going to look like total imbeciles, if BK reports this week that George Atkinson was not physically 100% for this game, and that limited his touches.
