Woodberry Forrest's coach Clint Alexander was my high school coach at Concord which is a small high school in southern Michigan. Our football program was a pushover for most of the 90's and he installed the middle school football teams and was in charge of that for a couple years until taking over as varsity coach in 1997.
Coach Alexender graduated from nearby Albion High School. He later went to Olivet College to play linebacker for the Comets. At his last stop before arriving in Concord, he taught at Starr Commonwealth, which tries to reform troubled kids.
In his first year as our head coach, our varsity went 0-9. In 1999, my senior year, we went 5-4 and just missed the playoffs. Two years later was the first team that he had coached all the way through middle school. That team finished 11-3 with a loss in the semi-finals.
He then moved on to Northville High School, which plays ii the highest division in Michigan, Class A. After a couple successful seasons(not exactly sure how many), he landed in Virginia at Woodberry Forrest.
At Concord our colors are purple and gold. One of his first changes as Varsity coach, he changed helmet colors from purple to ND gold and same with our pants. He knew I was a big Notre Dame fan and always talked with me about them and took teams on the two hour pilgrimage to South Bend for tours.
There is a Catholic church that has a visible steeple from the football field. He always joked with me about wanting to put a golden dome on there with Our Lady facing the football field.
I didn't even know what school he was at until I saw his name in a tweet from one of the ND insiders I follow about Martini committing.
