Every year i count the days down to the weekends i can enjoy watching ND football. my exwife didn't grasp my passion for them which who cares as i am no longer w/ her....anyways my fiance didn't even pitch a fit when she wanted to schedule our wedding on the Oklahoma game which i asked if we could do it the weekend of the BC game and we made the switch.....ANYWAYS i have gotten a couple invites to a wedding(decent friend but certainly not close by anymeans) and then a party to which i said to my fiance i didn't want to go...she asked why and i said about it being on gamedays...she said i could always just tivo them and said how could i allow sports to dictate my life... but to me...it's not the same at all to watch a taped game.....i wait all year for these 12 weekends and a bowl weekend to enjoy something in my life that brings me great joy..not only is it the game but its the whole game day routine i look forward to.......i mentioned this to a few people at work and they think i am completely crazy....i don't expect someone who's not as passionate about something to understand but does anyone else understand how i feel????

Yep. I have gotten better about a loss ruining the weekend though.

As Lou Holtz once said, "To those who've been there, no explanation is necessary. To those who haven't none is adequate enough".

My eldest son got married the night of the "Bush Push" game. They had to come pry us (son, best man, my other three sons, myself and the groomsmen) away from the TV to start the wedding. As soon as they finished walking down the aisle we all made a dash back to the TV. Yeah, I get where you're coming from.

It's totally normal for a true fan. 12 Saturdays in the fall, I don't want to be disturbed or prevented from watching ND football.

First of the year buy a calendar and mark out all the games. (or give your financee an ND Calender for Christmas the games are already marked out)

Give her 13 weekends to mark out OR be a hero and give her the other 38 weekends (aside from the B&G Game which is the 39th weekend who cares about the others anyway)

I'm lucky to have a wife that loves ND football too. (But she's not on my level LOL.) But she knows...Saturdays in the fall are for ND/college football. The rest of the year, I'll do whatever. But on Saturdays in the fall (and now 6 Friday nights now that I'm living in SB), I'm all about ND football. This October her cousin is getting married in Michigan and my wife already knows I'm not going.

Call me obsessive or call me a bad husband, but she knew the deal coming in and she is completely fine with it. Most games we watch together anyways. And the rest of the time, I try to be Husband of the Year LOL.

And unless the wedding revolves around a ND football game in South Bend, no wedding should be in the fall!

In the grand scheme of the universe we are crazy, but its these passions that make life worth living, however lately being an ND fan is like a meth addiction!

Anyway, I am the same way. Missed a cousin's kid's 2nd birthday last year for a game. This year I am holding the line on not going out of town for the Navy game. I have acquiesced a bit in that I said I would go as long as I could command the T.V. from start to finish of the game at the house we would go to. Naturally this imposition on non-football crazy friends worries my wife, but to her glorious credit, she totally understands how much I love the start of CFB and ND football especially so she isn't fighting it. That said, I do realize it would probably be more healthy for me to get into some mountain air by a lake all day rather than buried in the house watching the B1G 10 and SEC pound FCS teams into oblivion.

Finally, having children has totally mellowed me. I no longer let losses affect me. This probably more has to do with the team's performance over the last 5 years tempering my expectations, but nevertheless, I can't allow myself to act like an @$$ in front of them when ND finds new ways to give games away. I just don't want them to become that ahole fan.

Thats funny. I was best man for my friend at the game also.Limo driver looked at me funny when I told him to put the game on the radio or pull over and let me out. At the reception they had to come outside and get me to give the speech.

Several years ago I attended a UT/Bama party with some friends. With the stipulation that we had to watch the ND/UCLA game which came on a little before their game. When Zmardjia (spelling) caught the pass and ran it in for six toward the end of the game for the win, I jumped up and knocked over a long table with about a dozen drinks on it. Luckily we had moved the big screen in the garage and the spill was confined to the garage floor. However, a couple of the Vol fans said "if UT loses we are whipping your arse!" I didnt stick around.

also something i just need to get off my chest....and my chest is big enough for les miles....I hate when people say they are die hard ND fans(like this new guy at my work) and then i start talking a lil bit about recruiting--and he doesn't know anything...so i talk about some position changes , injuries etc and he has no clue who they are...

When I first started dating my now ex, I warned her that every weekend till the fall is yours, saturdays are mine! I politely kept reminding her of this all thru the winter, spring and summer, and she kept saying it was no problem. I managed to drag her the the ND/UM ESPN gameday set last year for the Under the Lights game. Come the third weekend in September, all i kept hearing was super sarcastic reminders of how I watch football on saturdays and can't be bothered......DID I MENTION EX! lol

.....i wait all year for these 12 weekends and a bowl weekend to enjoy something in my life that brings me great joy..not only is it the game but its the whole game day routine i look forward to

This^ is a good argument, i may have used a variation of this very statement with my GF in the past. My Girlfriend, and anyone who stays in my house knows that Notre Dame Saturday starts at 12:00:01am. Matter of fact, I have been reminding ppl in my house at random times, "do you know its less than 30 days till the first ND saturday of the Year?" or "Do you realize its less than 2 weeks away..(pause)..You know what"

My wife and kids are staying at her parents the night before the navy game due to the 8am kickoff and me being a complete lunatic on every play.

My wife and I had a "Fever Pitch" courting. We met in late December of 2008 where she fell in love with the off-season me.

She knew I was a big fan, being that 75% of my clothing was ND related and I had memorabilia everywhere. She did not know how big.

Being from NY, all my friends had allegiances to different teams so I wasn't conversating with them about ND 24/7.

That September ND came out and shut out NEVADA and she got introduced to "Saturday in the Fall" me.

A pacing, yelling, fact/stat spewing, profane drunk.

She admired my passion but wondered how someone could be so affected by a University he never went to and something as trivial as football.

I explained to her the difference between college football and the NFL. Then I further defined what ND stood for and how they handled their business.

Lastly, I explained how I became a fan and how much of a bonding unit ND was for my father and I. This was not just a football team to us. We went to war with this team, year in and year out.

We both fell to our knees at the same time and coverd our heads when BC kicked that field goal. We both stayed at the hotel in Disney World to soar with the Rocket and crumble in disbelief when that little yellow flag flew for clipping. We still talk on the phone before and after every game.

As ND fans we are constantly defending ourselves and the program. Being worldwide and spread so far, we sometimes find ourselves alone in that battle.

My wife is awesome and respects my passion. In return I agree t odo whatever she wants! Yes, I'm getting a pedicure this weekend.. so yea..

It's all about compromise my friend. DVRing isn't that bad, I have to do it for work. Air Traffic Control schedules are irregular. So when I do get a Saturday off to watch a game she is all about it and dons her super tight #7 jersey...

Glad to hear there are others out there haha

Like someone else said earlier, you either know what it means or you don't. There's no explaining it to those people who just don't get it. It's part of what makes Notre Dame so special.

I once finished a cross country race in high school, and didn't slow down at the finish line, but instead ran straight into the parking lot to my car. We made it to the game on time :)

Weddings should not be scheduled during football season. It just doesn't make any sense.

It sounds totally normal to me, but maybe I'm not normal now because I love gameday so much. I was fortunate to marry a woman who allows me to enjoy these few weekends of the year. We got married in 2005 during the Michigan State game, and that is the only game I have missed. I did tell her that I'm religious about watching Notre Dame... It has worked out great ever since because for all but 2 of our anniverseries have been tickets for Notre Dame game. So this year we will be at the Michigan game for our anniversary, and my wife is the one who asked if I wanted to spend $600 on the tickets. It definitely takes an understanding wife, but she likes to shop in the bookstore so it's all good. GO IRISH

Dude, sounds perfectly normal. I've skipped weddings of people I care a lot about, but they know ND football is THAT important to me.

The worst was when I quit my job because they had me working Saturdays. This was my first full-time job upon graduation, but they were NOT flexible enough to work around this. To me, all I need are 12 days a year (and the bowl). That's all I ask...those 12 Saturdays. They couldn't understand my need so i quit my job....luckily the timing was perfect or me to start my own company, but that was definitely insane fanhood taking over for me to quit like that.

I also have a very close friend with a wedding this fall, same day as the Miami game....needless to say they won't see me much at the reception unless they find me in my hotel room!

Perfectly normal to be this insane! Hell, I had a nightmare last night that Gunner was named the starter. Woke up sweating and freaking out....sometimes I think I need psychiatric treatment....then I get on Irish Envy and all is well!

Luckily, I don't think ill miss any gamesthis year. Is it just me or does it seem like every fall Saturday something comes up to make watching the game very difficult?cause I miss like 3-4 games a year and it stinks

As some have said, it literally used to ruin my entire weekend (still secretly does but I can control it) but now I've just realized that my expectations were way too high for the Notre Dame of today.

Me and my wife have a huge party every year for ND/USC. We have an awesome set up and have 3 flat screens going and we get a giant Trojan Pinata that we smash and green candy comes out (we smashed it and then set it on fire after the Bush push game....and we let it burn, no mercy kill)

My wife really just ignores me and lets me have my fun. We have an understanding. She knew what she was getting going in. Hell, every dog we've had together is named in honor of ND (Rudy, Holtz, and Montana)
