That's the problem I have with ND playing in China. The school will claim it's to "expand their global exposure" and to "add diversity to Notre Dame's bright student population".
I really want to discuss this further, but I have such strong opinions about all this nonsense that it won't come across as "Christian".

Start a thread in The Lep Lounge.

I wouldn't mind a game in Japan either. Someone mentioned a few months ago that Notre Dame is juge in Japan due to some anime show or whatever.

Don't think this is about attracting students from China, but more about building ND's brand name globally. Makes having a degree from ND more valuable. As someone that works in Asia, this can only help. And from a recruiting point of view, how great would it be to go to a team that plays internationally. What a differentation. "Our players went to Ireland and China the last two years" is a pretty good line with parents.

This.

I'm thinking these overseas games will help ND with US recruiting more so than international recruiting. Think of all the HS recruits out there that would love the opportunity to travel to a different country to play football for the next 4 years, depending on if this became an every year sort of thing but even if they only have an international game every few years, they at least get to travel abroad once during their time at ND. I know that would have appealed to me when I was 17 or 18 years old. I'm not sure China is the best country to choose to play in but I like the idea of these international site games.

I love it, though China isnt my first choice, it definitely is an interesting place and will help with recruits. It would be kid of fun to have an international game once a year... Just think of what that would do!

International games will be great for the program and school. No negatives at all.

Except for the Big Ten officiating crew and the Big East replay crew the AD"s office will undoubtedly hire.

It's all BS to the nth degree.

I guess I don't see the problem with attracting quality students from China, because the students that would come over here would be top flight students. Can you explain what your problem with it is, I'm curious. If you don't want to, that is okay.

I love the idea of playing in China, save for one thing. I wish ND could get Wake Forest or Temple or BYU as a partner for this game, and not Stanford.

I would prefer it if ND coaches could tell recruits that they would be playing a game in China, and then not have the kid hear the exact same thing from a Stanford coach. We don't compete with those other programs for recruits, but we do with Stanford.

Either way though, I love the idea. The exposure and the uniqueness sells me.

I like it -- football recruits will dig it, and it will add a bit of cache versus other state schools.

And having seen a bit of the Yao/Jeremy Lin effect, let me tell you, if ND could just get .01% of the Chinese fanbase behind them, it would be a game changer. The Yuan will flow like wine.

Plus, I was sad to see the in-depth discussion on jet-lag end. I would be nice to resume that debate for a few more threads.

he didnt want to start a huge conversation about, but I believe he is trying to indicate it is a missionary type of trip. I believe he thinks the only reason ND is doing it is because they are trying to spread Christianity. I could be wrong though.

But I agree with his attitude that this is not the place to get into a discussion about it.

Hmm, not sure how you came to that conclusion, the post he quoted was about money. Then again, I could be wrong. :) I’m not sure why you guys don’t think this is the right place to discuss it, this is the thread about the possibility of having a game in China, where else would you discuss your opinions of it? :)

Two things you dont talk about unless in the appropriate places: politics and religion. This is a football debate about the game in China, I dont think people want to come to a football board, in the football GD section and see a rant from evangelicals and atheists. I know I dont. Stuff regarding the game will pop up later and this will be thread to discuss it.

You are right 78, this is the place to discuss it.

This thread isn't about ND's opponent in such a game but about the location and discussion on why ND wants to go play football in a foreign land.

As we're not discussing X's and O's nor personnel as the players will be different by then discussing on pros and cons of such a game is all there is to talk about. Touching on political atmosphere, ND as ambassadors, missionary opportunity, $$$, worldwide news exposure, recruiting (athletic and academic, after all this is ND and not Auburn), jet lag, etc are all germaine. If two or more people want to discuss history and politics or missionary work or any other topic in detail they can start a thread on their specific interest.

Notre Dame has played in Japan* (1979) and Ireland (1996 & 2012) over the years.

Anybody, anytime, anywhere.

ND will go half way around the world to play while The Gators haven't travelled more than 500 miles in half a century.
