Not terrible for a freshman defensive back....bench as been discussed to death in other threads, is kinda overrated and IMO not crucial for a DB.

He should lie about his bench so its more similar to all the other false numbers that are thrown out there.

Nothing wrong with an athletic big safety- do you remember Taylor Mays USC- what a wrecking machine, ate NDs lunch for years, right?

How can a weight sound slow? Jaylon is in the 240s I believe, and runs a 4.4.

Well let's see. He wasn't exactly a 'burner' at 190 last year and if his weight was in fact now 220, I would not like him playing in the secondary. But it's probably about his bench so this argument is moot.

220 sounds like quite a solid bench number for a DB... Most DBs are thin, just really toned, bench press for DBs is not really that important from what I have been told. On the other hand, he could be bulking up only to slim down later as well.

I seriously doubt its bench... Never heard of anyone benching 220, seeing as two 45s on each side of the bar equals 225. 220 club is 42.5 pounds on each side, which would require more work to put on the bar than actuallly lift it haha (25, 10, 5, 2.5 on each side). Just seems unlikely

They could come up with 220 as a max if they figured it by benching a lower weight and plugging the number of reps into a formula. I believe the BFS program does this. HuskerPower is where I first heard of getting max's this way. We do this with our high school players. This way we don't run as big a risk of injury. An example would be.... Benching 225 five times would be a 258 bench max according to the formula we have. It is pretty dang close, as back when I was younger & lifted weights I got my one rep max and a week later did it by benching 225 a certain number of times. The numbers were 2 lbs off.

Jaylon who? Jaylon Smith? I thought we dispelled all this earlier: 212 and 4.58 at the Opening.

Yeah I'd ay John Lynch had a pretty succesful career as well.... He was in that range 6'2" 215-230.

I am just ready to see wrecking balls and form tackles out there and WRs rolling around on the ground and tapping their helmets...... Lets get back to the old days.

If anyone thinks someone in d1 college football is bragging about benching 220 you have no clue...period. Bench does not mean much, but for an athlete to brag about 220 would be embarrassing. I have worked in college weight rooms at the highest level and never would I say 220 is a good number for a college athlete.

I was way off on my numbers, but still, I don't see how a weight can imply slowness. If it were way out of the range then yes I would be worried. But if you are trying to be a big physical corner then
220 does not sound rediculous.

Hardy benches about 100 lbs more.

If your believing that 220lbs was referring to his bench and believe Hardy does 100lbs more...so even if we say 315lbs...this is complete BS!

EXACTLY!!!!! i know what i lift and i am a seasoned bodybuilder and i have to laugh when i see these bench numbers and squats...

Pretty sure 185 for 6 reps gets you into the 215 -220 range... Find out Saturday

Thank you. I've read this converstation and I can't beleive that it's impressive to some on here.

I played with guys in D1AA that played CB at 160-175 that were throwing up 275-280....

And yes, in press coverage and playing against large WR's, bench is important. It's not the MOST important, but don't dismiss it.
