Read last night on Rivals that some players volunteered to give up their Scholarships at USC so they could have more room. IDK if this is true or not.

That would be incredibly generous on their part but I find it hard to believe their isn't a rule that makes it hard if not impossible for a team to get around scholarship limits this way.

I thought the sanction was that they could only sign 15 a year no? They could do 18 this year because they only had 12 last year. I wouldn't think older players giving up school's would help with 2013 recruits.

They better not mess up this year and lose some games they shouldn't or all these out of state kids will drop them in a hurry.

Is that how they're phrasing it now?

NDinLA can probably weigh in at some point

My cousin wrestled at OSU and gave up his scholarship to allow the program to bring in more talent. It does happen....just probably not with Kiffin.

I agree with this premise. I dont want to start a dumb war but look at the SEC. IMO you take as many elite DLinemen that want to come to your school.

I agree. Notre Dame is getting close to that level. If you don't mind I'll take Ronald Powell and Sherif Floyd at ND.

I was actually going to make a thread on this subject. I was looking at ND class last year and this year and wondered why you guys have not taken more kids on the DL. Urban is loading up at tOSU.

We are looking to take two more DE/OLB (one to end up at DE (Sherit was priorty) one to end up at OLB) in addition to our 2 committed DEs

We took 2 DEs last year and DE/OLB

How dare you leave off Schwenke and Stockton with their two years respectively.

Kelly's doing the best he can here and it's plenty good. No one REALLY figured on the sudden departure of Lynch, so you'd have three near-All American quality true D-Linemen in Terry's first list. Day and Jones were rated very high coming in behind, and we had the inside information that Okwara was a preternatural Earth-mover. That's three more.

Our D-Line is evolving into a shared 3-4 and 4-3 as a regular substitution pattern. The thing that actually EASES pressure on getting D-Tackles is that Diaco is going to slide the Earth-mover DEs inside [a la the NYGs] and get TWO CAT/Crash linebackers to be rush DEs. Suddenly someone like Shembo becomes a dangerous DE instead of an OLB. If necessary, Rabasa can do this too, but he seems growing as an ILB to me.

We are fine this season and probably next with this pattern [three deep at almost every variety]. The only thing that we lack, is another true NT like Big Lou, and they are rare birds.

Utupo saw time at DE/CAT in the spring game and practice when Shembo was hurt

STL: right on the money. I believe the Utupo shift came when Lynch left, and it opened space for Justin to have a chance to grab some time which he was never going to get as an ILB.

Yeah, in 4-3 situations in particular I think Utopo saw a lot of DE snaps in the spring.

On the Utupo topic: It seems to me he is more or less a one trick pony (pass rushing). The biggest problem, there are a bunch of guys that can pass rush with more desirable measurables....

Going back and watching his high school film he has an incredible first step which is his game (speed rush) at most he is a situational/ST player especially if he cannot develop into a LB.

* my humble uneducated opinion *

in my humble uneducated opinion, Lynch fell into that category as well. Kind of like Dwight Freeney, really vital against the pass, but opens big holes in the run game.

How would you feel about it if I sprinkled some crack rocks on it?

Not wanting to get off target here, but Freeney and Mathis were never been asked to play the run.

excuse me? Freeney and Mathis are in the lineup for majority of the plays, so yes, they are expected to play against the run. Mathis is better against the run, but Freeney is almost useless by spinning his way out of the play. Only when Freeney was hurt was he put in for only the obvious passing downs. But when he is healthy, he is on the field for most of the game.

I agree totally that Freeney and Mathis are on the field for the majority of the plays, no argument there. However, it has been known for quite some time that they're first responsibility was to get into the backfield and play the run on the way. That's why you see him run past the runner or get taken out because of his spin move. I can still recall his frustration in an interview after a game when he was asked about the team getting hammered by the run. When asked about playing the run, he responded that he was just playing the way he was instructed to play. This year should be interesting as he will be asked to play the run. Of course playing it from the OLB will be new for him, but we should get a good idea.

Agreed, always liked this kid. His recruitment just never seemed to go aware close to ND. Not sure I give us much of a shot but still worth a look.

I know TP has said "all is good" but is Prevot a contingency plan if Muhammad doesn't commit/qualify?
