I should have clarified for you Bog, in terms of overall production and impact on the team/game, it is my belief Smith will be better then Te'o. That Montana/Bettis reference does not work for me personally because they both played in different eras. I don't care who plays where, he will be better.

Semper Fi my fellow Devil Dog!

A guy that's athletic as Smith will have NO problem being more productive than Manti...assuming he plays up to his potential.

That was my point! It wasn't supposed to work. It was like comparing sling-shots to busses. And what about this Piper guy?

Nike didn't plan this the best, running the 40s first in a chilly morning. I would have expected them to be in the afternoon

Certain prospects have overcome it, Brazil ran a 4.32 and Elliott a 4.42, 4.59 is good for Smith (faster than Devin Butler) but I think he can do better

EDIT: a 247 poster said this:

Jaylon Smith's 40 would have been the 4th fastest among LBs at the NFL Draft Combine.

It really doesn't matter. 4.59 is not bad at all for a LB who has yet to mature physically. He will get faster. Besides it's how you translate that straight line test speed into game speed having to change directions all the time. Looks like he does it better than most.

I will take a 4.59 from a linebacker all day long. But I know Jaylon can do better

There were DB's and other skill position players running in the 4.6's and 4.7's. This is an excellent time for Jaylon, all things considered.

Michigan board said Treadwell WR

Thank you.

That kinda sucks though. I don't see even God turning Treadwell away from scUM. I wish Jaylon was rooming with someone that we might have a chance at.

Here is a really big point:

Most people lie about forty times!

So our vaunted 4.5 forty defensive back a couple years ago was about 4.8 and our last years first round draft choice went from a 4.3 to almost a 4.6. And our linbackers three years ago were all five flat, and change. So don't wory about the forty times. It is little stuff.

Trotter you have the best sig on this board. Also it's unbelievable how true this is. I'm prepared for it and it still surprises me.

I cant remember the last time scouts from Florida spoke so highly of a northern football recruit especially a LB as they did of Jaylon. He really impressed everybody at the IMG 7's tourney

Dude, nobody disagreed with you. So your experiment failed (and thus was deleted), and no, this site wasn't exposed. If you want want to start a crusade against 40 times, just start a new thread. It's an interesting topic...I just have no idea why you have to try and trick members of this site just to get your point across. Give these guys some credit and just address the topic head-on.

AllGator - we got a good one, and we normally don't get that good of a player on defense, so we're excited (if you can't tell from the 2000+ replies on this thread, 8 months from NSD LOL)...

From JC Shurburt

There's a "catch up drill" where the RB gets a head start and the linebackers have to take an angle and track them down.

Smoke Mizzell makes Anzalone whiff in a one on one- no surprise. Mizzell thrives in this setting.

Minutes later..

Jaylon Smith just tracked down Mizzell.

Wow.

Mizzell is quicker than fast. Watch his highlights. Probably around a 4.5-4.6 guy.

According to Steve, Mizzell said he has never been run down from behind before. Mizzell called Jaylon the most athletic prospect he has ever played against.

There is track speed and there is football speed. In the off-season 4.6 is slow because people and hand timers lie.

But in reality, if an excellent football player runs a 4.6 he's plenty fast and can be dominant. Is it good enough for an otherwise mediocre football player? No. But if a strong coordinated kid with good instincts is running that speed he is going to seem fast on the football field.

When you put it all together, like Jonas did last year, you are going to score some TDs.

40 times are overrated. Hand timed, laser timed; doesn't matter, overrated.

shuttle > 3 cone drill > 40

I want agility, explosiveness, change of direction before I care about a 40 yard sprint.

i think you got your equation backwards, with the shuttle should being the most important
