Rodney King, key figure in LA riots, found dead | Fox News

"Can we all get along?"

...

In the two decades after he became the central figure in the riots, King was arrested several times, mostly for alcohol-related crimes. He later became a record company executive and a reality TV star, appearing on shows such as "Celebrity Rehab."

In an interview earlier this year with The Associated Press, King said he was a happy man.

"America's been good to me after I paid the price and stayed alive through it all," he says. "This part of my life is the easy part now."

We all go through the trials in life, no matter what the man did wrong in his life, if he found peace in his heart and faith in a higher power before he left this earth he accomplished what he was meant to do. There are a lot of people in the world. They all have a different perspectives even if they stand in the same place. I hope friend that someday you do not feel that way about your fellow man. It's a tough world as it is, don't become so cynical that your time here goes in vein.

That is ****ing cold dude.

You know what, you are absolutely correct. You're entitled to your opinion, as I am mine.
But the fact is, he was a habitual abuser of drugs and alcohol.
He managed to get 55 people killed in riots due to a video not showing all the true facts of his arrest. That he was a DUI, had been speeding in excess of 90+,refused to pull over until a lengthy chase by the police, and then resisted arrest.
And now we find out he is found face-down in a pool wth no sign of foul play....that means there are 2 possibilities for causes of death.
You can feel bad or him all you want, but Im not going to waste one more second thinking about it.

That is truly sad. I hope one day you find it in your heart not to be so judgmental of another's errors. He who is without sin.....

I can see this is a sour subject. The great thing here is that we all are entitled to our opinions. There are people in this world that I could never understand why they are the way they are. I choose to not hate anyone no matter what they do but rather to pray for them to see the errors in their ways to improve their lives and the lives of the people around them. It's kinda funny though because 10 years ago I didn't feel this way and 10 years from now my views will change again I'm sure.

Geez, the man is dead. He didn't kill anyone, or make anyone kill anyone, he didn't cause the riots.

RIP, I'll let St. Peter sort it out as he will with all of us.

Some of you guys are pricks. I hope that when you dudes meet your maker, you don't have a bunch of internet tough guys degrading your character and saying things like "good riddance".

If you don't like the guy, you could simply keep your mouth shut. If it's "no big deal", then why say anything at all? Why open the thread? Degrading people in their moment of death is one of the most cowardly acts someone can do. I was always taught to respect the dead, but I suppose that isn't a shared value.

Bunch of jerks...

The irony here is that had the cops not beaten him within an inch of his life, he wouldn't have died in the pool, because he probably wouldn't have had one.

A junkie who is also somebodies son, or father or brother (I dont know much bout Rodney).

Before saying what you said trying putting yourself in the deceased family or friends shoes, how they would feel seeing that said. Or how you would feel having that said about your loved one.

RIP Rodney King. He was a riot.

But seriously, it's a little harsh to say "good riddance" to someone struggling with addiction. I hope you never have a family member who gets addicted to anything because it is hell.

I don't understand the logic behind blaming him for the aftermath of the incident that thrust him into the public eye. Was he driving while intoxicated? Sure. Did he resist arrest? There certainly is some evidence that indicates so.

However, how does that make him responsible for getting 55 people killed in the LA Riots? I don't remember that he was the cameraman that recorded the infamous tape. I don't remember him passing down the verdict that exonerated the police officers that beat the **** out of him after he seemingly lacked the power to further resist arrest. I don't remember him encouraging people to loot and burn down their neighborhoods.

He certainly had his issues, and I'm not here to defend his character, but if one wishes to denigrate the deceased, then I would hope that at the very least they have their facts straight. Perhaps you should have not wasted one more second prior to the statements you made above and instead just let him be.

I will only say a couple things on this subject.

First, R.I.P Mr. King.

Secondly, any video of a police beating, have it be big or small, should be kept in the court room only. This will help avoid any public opinions in the trial, or heaven forbid another riot.

Thirdly, don't ever, ever, ever believe what you see in police "brutality" videos until you actually hear real testimony from all involved. I currently work in a jail and deal with violent criminals on a daily basis, some actions are required. Our goal at the end of the day is to go home to our family.

Well said. That is a very dangerous job. I used to do a job similar to what you are doing now and those cats were always trying to pull sneaky underhanded crap on me all the time. Stay safe bro and thanks for what you do!

Anytime someone dies who was not suffering, its a hard thing for those around them. I feel sorry for anyone close to King.

My own personal feelings

...I don't condemn the guy for having an affliction. I don't condemn the guy for making poor choices in his life. I will say no matter the circumstances in his life...someone has overcome similar, and not done the things he's done.

As far as the specific incident that brought King into my conciousness...well, it is the first incident where I remember the criminal being celebrated and cops universally condemned in the media...

It is the first time I recognized media for having the priorites that are in place today....they are no longer fulfilling a public service except by accident. The Media perverted the circumstances around the King ordeal.

Men will be men...men on both sides of this exercised poor judgment...neither more aggregious than the others. But the media picked a side...and since rightous indignation sells...and that charged with race is incendiary...I give you the LA riots...

Anyone want to comment on Reginald Denny? Anyone even remember him, and his circumstances...Why? Cold hard truth is, it detracted from the storyline that was selling, so it went away.

There is a larger point here...Racism absolutely exists, but it is the media's cash cow, and even when we've long since overcome it...it'll still be in our faces because it sells.
