Notre Dame football: Irish get visit from junior linebacker - southbendtribune.com

Linebacker Clifton Garrett received an offer from Notre Dame on May 30 and didn’t wait too long to make a campus visit.
Garrett was scheduled to visit Friday with his parents to get his first look at the campus.

“I want to go down there and see what they have to offer,” Garrett said before making his visit. “I’ve never been to a college campus like Notre Dame. I want to go down there and get a feel for the place and see the environment.”

The 6-foot-2½, 220-pounder from Plainfield (Ill.) South High joined a number of committed and uncommitted visitors on campus Friday.

“They could potentially be my teammates so I want to go and see what they think about Notre Dame and what their plans are, and things like that,” Garrett said.

The trip to Notre Dame was just the second college visit the rising junior has made. He already has visited Illinois, one of four offers he holds other than Notre Dame. Garrett has also been offered by Ohio State, Michigan State and Indiana.

Garrett received his offer from Notre Dame after offensive coordinator Chuck Martin visited his high school to watch him work out with his team.

Garrett called Martin later that night and received the verbal offer.
“I was very excited to get an offer from a school like Notre Dame,” Garrett said. “It’s a great school.”

A combination of tradition and the prowess of defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Bob Diaco were immediate attractions for Garrett.

“They have a great linebackers coach. He knows what to do with linebackers,” Garrett said. “They just have a great history. I’d love to go to a school with a tradition like Notre Dame.”

Playing linebacker in a 3-3-5 defensive scheme last season as a sophomore Garrett recorded 78.5 tackles, five for a loss, three sacks, three forced fumbles and one interception.

He said he’s been impressed with the way Manti Te’o has been able to emerge in the Irish defense.

Garrett is ranked as the No. 2 outside linebacker and the No. 41 overall prospect in the 2014 class by 247Sports.com

With just five offers and two years of high school remaining, Garrett said he’s in no rush with his recruitment.

“So far I’m giving every school a chance,” Garrett said. “I don’t really have a top school right now. I just want to take some visits and see how I like a few schools.”

Per 247 enjoyed his visit, spent most of his time w/ Diaco, Anzalone, & Smith.

Tweeted a lot of good things and pictures from the visit.

IMO he is the kind of kid that will enjoy all of his visits and I would say ND is near the top with OSU leading still by a lot

He did not stop at tOSU even though he was driving through Columbus. Should tell you a lot about whether tOSU is leading or not.

Where was he heading after his visit with us that took him through Columbus? Last time I checked, Columbus is east of SB and Plainfield, IL is west of SB?
