There may already be an existing thread for this, but I couldn't find it, so....

Since it's end of May and everyone's brain has rotted from lack of new actual football stimulation, I thought that something like this might help. Who would it be reasonable to sign on NSD for 2013s class, which would make you happy? The "reasonable" part means that we have a real chance of getting, and actually fills projected needs.

Part one of such a prognostication would be making some guess at how many will be able to be signed. And as to that, I'm saying 21.

If I have 21 to play with, then I have 12 already [my whole line and TE, two WRs, a QB, two DBs and a DE]. Who should be the other "nine" [number debatable]?

My opinions:
1). Jaylon Smith;
2). Doug Randolph;
3). Danny Mattingly;
4). Michael Deeb; giving us four linebackers for Diaco to fill roster needs with.

5). Isaac Rochell;
6). Scott Pagano;
7). one of Darius Latham or Donovan Munger; giving Diaco four D-Line to fill gaps with.

8). Cole Luke; third DB , and stop since we are so overloaded at safety.

9). one "New Kelly-offense-like" RB/ Slot hybrid [don't know who best fits.]

That's 21 and no more. If you guys are bored out of your minds, maybe you'd like to make a better list, or argue for a different number. My attempt at filling the doldrums....

Given the decommits and transfers from this past year, we could potentially go up to 25 this year, depending on the quality of prospect.

I do like this thread though, I will respond when I can get out of the office

My count doesn't allow us to sign 25... maybe we need Whiskey to give us a best number. Guys like Wood, Watt, ZMartin et al are in play.

My "21" number was because we have twelve guys using up last year of eligibilty and I think ten other seniors. We were also, I think three counts down on scholarship totals [i.e. 82 instead of 85] but I could be wrong on that count. If it was right, then 12+!0+3= 25 maximum.

Subtracting from that potential would be fifth year grants. Some of those names are interesting [again please feel free to correct this if the list, gathered from BLUE&GOLD, is inaccurate]: Wood, ZMartin, Watt, Tausch, Fox, Calabreese, ... do they want to return for fifths, and does Kelly allow them to? I made a guesstimate that maybe four of those guys would want to return and be granted. Thus the "21".

Ol full
De sherit Rochell
Lb Muhammad. Jaylon. Cox. Mattingly. Randolph. Anzalone

LBs:

Isaac Rochell
Jordan Sherit (I hope)

DE / LB Swing:
Alquadin Muhammad

A guy we haven't really heard of / thought about yet

Brings me to 11. This is my most realistic / ideal list I can think of this early. Will probably look like a joke in January, but oh well. Would absolutely love it if it wound up like this.

According to ISD's eligibility chart, there are currently 80 players on scholarship. 13 run out of eligibility putting the number of possible returning scholarship players at 67. Zach Martin, Cierre Wood, and Tyler Eifert could all possibly be gone as well putting it at 64. Will be 18-21 in this class unless there are transfers.

I apologize in advance if those numbers are incorrect, but the chart looks to be updated with the incoming freshmen already listed.

I'll try

QB: full

RB/Slot: Craig Lee

WR: Demarcus Robinson

TE: full

OL: full

DL: Matuska + Sherit, Rochell

LB: Mattingly, Smith, Anzalone, Randolph, Muhammed/ Ogundeko

CB: Cole Luke + one other

S: pass

Craig Lee is a total shot in the dark
I'm still confident with De Robinson because he is visiting this summer and will official
We are in good position but idk if we lead with Sherit. He loved his first visit
I'm confident we land one elite corner but we need to get Atleast one more corner.

All of the above ... but only if they value a quality education, quality life-long friendships and a tasty ROI. Oh, and they have to be willing to put up with South Bend for four or five years. With or without their girlfriends.

OMM and Clashmore are right. We currently have 60 freshman, sophomores, and juniors on scholarship. That means 2013 recruits + 5Ys = 25.

Seniors eligible for a 5Y include Wood, J. Golic, Watt, Z. Martin, Stockton, Calabrese, Fox and Tausch. I can't see Golic or Stockton getting asked back given their lack of production, and unless we really whiff on LBs this year (knock on wood), I doubt both Calabrese and Fox get a 5Y. Wood seems likely to declare early, and Tausch will likely have to earn his 5Y with solid performance. So we could bring back as few as 3 or as many as 6 5Ys.

Assuming 4-5 5Ys, that leaves 20-21 spots for 2013 recruits.

I'd like to have a little more scholarship room, but we do have to obey the rules, unlike Kiffen or Saban [yes, they bend them but in my opinion breaking the spirit of the rules is breaking them]. To get into the 22-24 range, we'd have to let go all but three fifth-years or get a transfer or both. The "best case scenario" for 2013 numbers isn't so "best" for the team, however, as it would have Cierre Wood and Zach Martin leaving a year of eligibility on the table. Kelly would follow his plan of Brindza doing the kicking even if Tausch was more consistent, Watt would hopefully stay as well might starting and growing-into-it Will linebacker Fox. "Watt and Fox only" staying leaves 23 spots, unless one of the QBs go. If both ZMart and Wood want to give it another ride, then we're at 21 unless a QB [or someone] goes.

So, since sh!t happens, maybe more than 21 is a reasonable speculation, but I think 24 is pretty far out at this moment. As I like one more big on the D-Line than most above, and five versatile LBs wouldn't bother me a bit, my fantasy optimism says "yes: 22 or 23".

Maybe, but I think that Kelly had a plan [a dice-rolling plan] when he signed Brindza. He was hoping that Thunderfoot would settle into both kicking roles and he could ultimately save spots. If I were him [and The Lord be praised that I'm not], I'd still be seriously interested in a punter to replace Turk, rather than counting on Kyle doing it. Of course we probably don't know if the staff is seeing interesting walk-on kickers.

It is definitely fluid. I could see only keeping 3 5th years, leaving a class of 22.

This is a wonderful thread concept. I too will respond when I get done with my daily chore(s). I think GB is closer to an accurate number as we have a number of scholarships opening up including Chris Salvi who is in his fourth year of elgibility, and AL evacuating, not including Zack Martin, who will probably get paid more to leave for the NFL than any recent Irish player.

I think we should take:

Position, #... grade (current/best guess)
Qb x 1 ... A+
Rb x 1 (or 2 if one is more of an athlete) ... F/B+
Wr x 3 (+1 hybrid if we take only 1 RB)... B/A
TE x 1-2 ... A/A-A+
OL x 5 ... A/A-A+

DE x 2-3 ... B-/A-
DT/NT x 1 ... F/B (probably get a 3rd DE that can slide over)
LB x 4 (2 inside/2 outside)... F/A- (a stud, and three great prospects, but not a secon inside guy)
CB x 3 (possibly 4 if they will come)... B+/A- (3 excellent prospects, no sure thing)
S x 1 (if he could play CB in a pinch like Farley)... F/B (good prospect)

Right now I think the class ends up between a Notre Dame B to a Notre Dame A. Its looking very good, but you never know.

I'd rate a class something like this, based on a where it ends up in a composite of Rivals, ESPN, Scout, and 247:
Below 30 = Fail
30-25 = C-
25-20 = C
20-17 = B- (last year)
16-13 = B
12-10 = B+
9-7 = A-
6-4 = A
3-1 = A+

Salvi and Lynch are already accounted for in those calculations. ZMart is a "variable" as to staying or leaving. One of our "problems" at Notre Dame is that I think that Kelly cannot gamble on uncertain leavings, and must stay at 85 [or below] with his commitment list. If any of you guys think that we'd allow a guy to sign on NSD only on the hopes that Wood or Martin, for instance, would shortly later go NFL, I'd like to know that. IF however, Kelly had solid and confidential information about Cierre's, Zack's, Chris', Dan's plans [or Tommy's or Andrew's etc], then he can play within those hidden but real parameters.

Prior to NSD, Kelly can "accept" conditional verbals, I suppose, like: "yes, we accept your verbal, but only if we get the following situation --- we'll keep you apprised" [I am not talking here obviously about grades, test scores, or moral breakdowns, but football contingencies from other athletes]. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone feels that we do such soft commitments at all for an actual verbal.
